Dying

Seems most forums are dying now. It's too bad, because forums are still a superior format. Social media has it's place but I always figured forums could continue to coexist, but sadly not what has been happening.

I don't hang around OT anymore, I mostly talk about hardware which is why I came here in the first place. Probably has something to with having a wife and three children, which I didn't have when I joined. I don't spend much time on SoMe, and this is the only forum I'm still active on.

The forums should probably develop a plugin hybrid so as to be accessible via one of these social media fads as well as recruit from them.
This format has something that Facebook and the others do not provide... Be a shame to let it go.

Right, but unfortunately the kinds of people that are on ATOT are mostly flea market type tech people...and flea markets are also dying or we could just recruit the way the religious cults do.

hardware is why i came to ATOT too

but now i care more about saving money than having a nice computer

Everything is dying, always.

From the fools gold mouthpiece the hollow horn
Plays wasted words, proves to warn
That he not busy being born
Is busy dying

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Have not upgraded or bought any new computer hardware in quite a few years. Most of my server stuff is actually pushing 10 years and my current workstation at least 5. Everything is also just so expensive and hard to get now. At least here in Canada, the few sites left to buy parts from, everything is always out of stock. I like to look for fun but I find myself not being able to get all the parts I would want. I'm sure if I tried really hard I could find parts in stock but the fact that I even have to try so hard kind of takes the fun out of it. I find computer part pricing was kind of a bathtub curve and we are now at the part where it starts going up while selection is also more sparse. The 2010's were probably the golden era of computer building. Unfortunately I think the whole idea of DIY computer builds and computers as a whole is dying too. Everyone just wants to use phones and tablets now. SFF boxes will continue to be around for business use, but those aren't really that easily customizable and tend to be much slower than a full size custom build.

ACTUALLY the next few months are most likely going to be a big window of opportunity price-wise for most PC components ESPECIALLY GPU's.

DDR5 is still very high but that's about it and stock for all but the VERY fastest/latest components is no longer a problem.

If you've been waiting/wanting to upgrade strike while the iron is hot.

Let’s hope so, I’m ready to strike 🙂

kI've been reading about Facebook's troubles, often they are referred to as "boomerbook". They lose market share to tiktok, instagram et al by the bucketloads.
My gut feeling is this and other forums will get a mild resurgence over time. As stated above, quality over quantity.
