This may be a dumb question but isn't the data written to the layers before they are 'sandwiched' into a dual-layer DVD making a "dual-layer burner" an impossibilty without a press some hot plastic and some transparent media?

[EDIT] I stand corrected. It appears that we may be seeing a 'dual' writer or an 8.5GB DVD in the next couple of years. That would be nice, but this is a great program until then[/EDIT]

[Double EDIT] I have corrected myself again. My original sarcastic post turned into curiosity and I was able to find this article about the Pioneer A06 being used (with firmware upgrade) to burn a DUAL LAYER DVD. If this is the case, I won't have to buy a new burner, I can just upgrade my firmware and burn DUAL LAYER DVDs. Sorry for the original sarcasm, and wow for the firmware upgrade..... I can't wait now... [/Double EDIT]

Try next couple of months :) At least that's what the stories I've read indicate. I'd imagine at least sometime in 2004 anyway.. Can't wait. It'll be interesting how current set-top DVD players handle an odd 8.5GB DVD.

Lets say i save the menus and extras, except for one extra which i left out in reauthoring. What happens if i click the link to that extra in the menu?

Lots of questions here.

So what happens to DVDShrink when dual layer becomes available? Will it still work?

Is dual layer going to give the home user better quality or just more complexity? I also wonder what these are going to run when they first come out.

When you re-author you can't keep menus. If you wish to remove extras complete try Nero Recode2 or Elby CloneDVD.

I suspect Blu-ray (or competitor) units will be out before you see a dual-layer DVD unit.

What benefit does Shrink have over this? Anyone know?

THanks.

Well, I tried CloneDVD and it wouldn't let me back up a copy-protected disk. I'd call that a pretty big difference. Nero also has a new backup tool but it too won't do copy-protected disks. DVDShrink is for me, then!

How far will DVDShrink shrink? For instance, could one make single (though probably ugly) disk VCD's on a CD-R with it? Or how about 2-CD VCD's?

Still trying to decide about what DVD-Burner to get, but I thought I'd start learning the software in the meantime.

Well, consider that VCDs are 352x240 rez (NTSC) whereas DVDs are 720x480. You'll be cramming 720x480 into 352x240. That'd be REAL ugly. :)

Granted. What I wanted to know is whether making VCD's is one of its capabilities...ooooogly or not.

you only have to do Deep Analysis once right?

is there a better time to do it? before you click Backup! ?

Correct. I'm not sure why they have it on a dedicated button, and as a box to check after you click backup. I suppose some folks would like to analyze before commiting to the backup. I always do it as part of the backup.

Not really, The quick analysys gives you the layout of the DVD so you can choose your video and audio streams, and get a fair idea of the compression needed.
The Deep Analysys is used AFTER you select the streams you want to keep so it can accurately re-encode the DVD to the desired filesize.
If the deep analysys was preformed before you selected the desired streams it would be wasted effort and time.

Thanks for the great job dvdshrink, and MrBass, I've tried just about every dvd backup program out there, and dvdshrink is my personal favorite. In 200+ backups i have come across exactly ONE disc that it could not backup.

I used DVDShrink to back up Sex and the City, but all 6 titles were in 1 VOB, so I shrunk them all at the same rate.

If DVDShrink lists your episodes separately, then you can split it up over 2 disks by selective compression.

For the first disk, keep the first half of the episodes at 100%, second half using Still Pictures.
For the second disc, use Still Pictures for the first half, 100% for the second half

Then mark you backups accordingly.

I see 2 reasons why it cannot do it now:
1) DVDShrink cannot change the resolution. There were some rumors at doom9.org (no hard evidence, though) that DVDXCopy has this feature as beta; as usual, nobody knows how to "enable" it.
2) VCD is an MPEG-1, where DVD is MPEG-2 video.

If people figure out the way to change the resolution during transcoding, then DVD->SVCD would be possible. SVCD is 480x480 MPEG-2, up to 40 min per CD.

Thx LizReed, but I was wondering if I can just fit the 4 episodes in one dvd-r and if it will work without the menus. If not, good pointers on fitting it on 2 dvdrs. Thx again.
