I tried to use WinMpg and Ace video workshop but WinMpg always failed half way and the Ace software completed the job but forgot the audio!
Any suggestions on how to do this greatly appreciated!

See this guide for how to encode your dvd....hopefully you can figure out the .avi import as the source rather than the dvd. dvd2dvd guide

Up until 3 months ago I had not owned or burned a DVD. DVD Shrink and Nero 6 are the easiest combination to make quick and easy backups in 2 simple steps. Excellant program. I would recommend it to anyone, and I echo the sentiment that it being free makes it even better.

I've compressed movies down to 75% (I very rarely allow myself to go below 80), and if the transfer is good on the original DVD, I don't see a whole lot of difference from the original. I'm watching it on a Sony Progressive Scan DVD player connected through component video and on a TV that's running at 480p.

Nothing beats originals though - not until dual layer burners are out ;)
This may be a dumb question but isn't the data written to the layers before they are 'sandwiched' into a dual-layer DVD making a "dual-layer burner" an impossibilty without a press some hot plastic and some transparent media?

[EDIT] I stand corrected. It appears that we may be seeing a 'dual' writer or an 8.5GB DVD in the next couple of years. That would be nice, but this is a great program until then[/EDIT]

[Double EDIT] I have corrected myself again. My original sarcastic post turned into curiosity and I was able to find this article about the Pioneer A06 being used (with firmware upgrade) to burn a DUAL LAYER DVD. If this is the case, I won't have to buy a new burner, I can just upgrade my firmware and burn DUAL LAYER DVDs. Sorry for the original sarcasm, and wow for the firmware upgrade..... I can't wait now... [/Double EDIT]
I suspect Blu-ray (or competitor) units will be out before you see a dual-layer DVD unit.

Dual-layer units were shown at CES and are expected to ship in the 2nd quarter of the year.

Any consensus on what's burning combination yields the best results?

A. DVD decrypter+dvdone+nero
B. DVDshrink+nero

Assume price is not a concern.

1. DVD-9 movies --> option A
2. DVD-9 tv eps. --> option B

Suggestions?

I can't believe no one is talking up CLONEDVD???? Linky

It teamed up with a DVD-ROM and DVD Burner with the Sysofts ANYCD plugin is pretty much a one step process!

I love this program!

Has anyone had issues backing up Crime Spree? Mine failed to read the LAST .vob file at 75%. I wiped the disk and put it in my wife's DVD-ROM and it failed at the same spot.

So I did the unthinkable (gasp) and rented a copy of the movie because I don't trust DVD's capability to remain readable after a lot of use (scratches, etc...). If you need any proof, see above, or ask someone with kids :) Anyway, the rented DVD (again, Crime Spree which I own) stopped at the EXACT same location. I've never had this happen before. Anyone else have experience with this title? I'm a little pissed to be honest because both full screen and widescreen are on this disk, and the widescreen is the part it messes up on (less than 200MB from getting the whole thing). Just my luck ;)

Do I have to use Nero to do the burning? I don't care for Nero. Please don't post questions asking why (lots of Nero groupies out there), I simply prefer another program. If these guys make ISO files why can't I use something else? Is it because they are DVD ISO files?

Any time I try to open a disk with DVD Shrink 3.1.2, I get the following error:

DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue

Failed to read the file "D:\"

Copy Protection Error - The read failed because the ceptor is encrypted

This happened with all the DVD's I have, inlcuding ID4, Pearl Harbor, and LotR: TT.

Any ideas?

No you don't. You can choose to compress to a local drive (it'll create VIDEO_TS for you) and then use whatever DVD burning app to burn...

good software.

Excellent copy quality including all extra's cept foreign language.
Good speed.
Worked flawlessly with nero 6

puts to shame DVD-X-copy (buggy).

If you are home when the mailman comes, the NETFLIX deal is sweet, same day turnabout ;)

j/k i wouldn't copy a dvd that i don't own. that would be illegal. and i dont suggest you do either.

Thanks Xtremist. I was hoping that would be the answer. How long would you guess it'll take me to get comfortable with this software? I currently use DVD X Copy Platinum and can't burn many episodic DVD's, which is why I'm giving this a try. It's amazing to me how many DVD's X Copy can't handle.

Well, it depends. If you want to do pretty much full DVD backups (maybe taking out foreign audio tracks), then it shouldn't take you long at all, like 5 minutes maybe? Picking and choosing (re-authoring) a DVD to get a better quality DVD, but taking out menu's, chapters, etc... takes a little bit longer to learn how to use, but that was mainly cuz I'd never done it before (only made full disc backups till last week). Actually choosing which titles to include in a re-authored DVD isn't hard, but sometimes it's hard to know which extra features are which just based on the title number without watching them. What I do is download Filemom from the guys at http://www.sysinternals.com/, run it and filter for whatever DVD player you use. Then I launch the DVD, select the features I want to make sure to include and check out what VOB filemon says the player is reading. Then I look and see the filesize in Explorer and then I can compare that to similar file sizes displayed in DVD Shrink. Sounds like it might be tough, but it's not really and in most cases probably not even required, just depends on many titles the DVD has.

The other thing that kinda got me for a few minutes was that sometimes there are two title sets that when you play/preview in DVD Shrink look IDENTICAL. And I had no idea which one to choose. I wasn't paying close enough attention though ;-) After loading Filemon again to try and see what was going on, it hit me that one set was full screen and the other was widescreen. Sure enough, preview again in DVD Shrink and one set was full screen, the other was widescreen. With those kinds of disk's, you shouldn't have any problem backing up the entire movie without any compression whatsoever (just cut out whichever format you don't want).

It's all pretty easy to use I think. I also think there's been some links to tutorials posted already in this thread that explain how to do all this better than I can on the fly :) Good luck.

[EDIT]Fixed link.[/EDIT]

Dvdshrink is a good quick program to use when you just need a quick backup, but anything more than 10% or so starts too look bad, if you have to use more than 10% compression you should consider using CCE and Reauthorist.

Heh heh 50% and didn't notice a difference, go see the optometrist. Its a great program esp for DVD5 or small DVD9 discs.

Looks like 3.1.3 was released today....

Version 3.1.3 - 18 Jan 2004
---------------------------

Added support for RGB 16-bit and 24-bit video preview (for really
old video cards).

Fixed possible crash during video preview initialization.

Added preference options for overlapped I/O and read block size,
this may increase ripping performance on some systems.

Changes to Nero initialization parameters which caused excessively
slow read speeds on some configurations.

Added Nero burn options: write speed, book type and DVD+R/RW high
compatibility mode switch.

Fixed "no default audio" and "no default subpicture" options in
re-author mode. These are the default selection. In this case the
DVD player determines which streams to play.

Fixed bug where deep analysis could still be forced on.

Increased maximum compression to same level as 3.0b5.

Fixed bug which prevented opening of individual IFO files (can
do this by dropping IFO file into DVD Shrink main window, use with
caution because unless you open a VIDEO_TS.IFO file the output
will not be a complete DVD).

Have you set the region on the DVD drive you are using to rip? I had the same problem till I set mine...........

The drive itself is set to region 1 (US), In DVD shrink I have just left the default setting of region free. Is this what you are talking about ?
It works fine if I use DVD decrypter to rip and then mount with daemon tools, but If i try a straightforward backup inside dvdshrink i get that error message.
