I agree that some more context/backstory would have been good but I don't think the movie suffered for that story wise and 3 hours is probably a bit long for our social media addicted brains (collectively). Maybe there's a good directors cut in our future?

Denis has so far been adamant that there will be no directors cut or extended edition of the movie.

Same with Blade Runner 2049.

I wonder if his WB deals give him final cut, within restrictions. Streaming services would back up dump trucks full of cash to his house and agree to theatrical for the shots at awards alone.

Contrary to popular rumors, no 6-hours long director's cut, ever existed. The only "director's cut" of the film was the one shown theatrically; Lynch never had a hand in any other version of Dune. Lynch's original intention was for Dune to have been about 3+ hours long. To that end, about 5 hours was shot. This is also confirmed by author 'Frank Herbert', in the introduction to the book "Eye". It would be impossible for a 6-hour version to exist and even a 5-hour Dune would mean the inclusion of many scenes never intended for the final version (for reasons of redundancy, etc.). It is only necessary to read any of the final scripts for the film to realize that there was never any intention of making Dune more than 4 hours in length at the very most: the script for anything more just was never there.

The books for all of their detail leave a lot to the imagination, but the combat is meant to be a mix of advanced martial arts and bladed weapons. The Weirding Way (the only thing I would describe as Matrix like) was only practiced by the Bene Gessirit at this point in the story.

As good a director as he is, he is just wrong on this. Films are shortened by Hollywood for better mass appeal. Extended cuts are for the fans.

There are numerous scenes on the dune subreddit known to have been cut. Gurney playing the baliset. Dr Yueh telling Jessica about his wife. The dinner scene.

All these a fan would truly appreciate. It seems as though he wants to be stubborn and say that the theatrical cut is the best cut no ifs ands or buts. Seems to be a prideful thing perhaps.

The weirding way was more like teleportation, the swordmasters of Ginaz were supposed to be ridiculously fast but also graceful and technically skilled, I believe House Ginaz had its origins in a theatrical troupe. Maybe WH40k Harlequins would be a better comparison.
 
Let’s see…no one explained that Crysknives have to be blooded every time they’re removed from their sheaths. You see Stilgar and his cohort doing just that at Paul’s fight scene when they all unsheathed their crysknives.


Interestingly, that rule was ignored early on when Shadout Mapes unsheathed the crysknife she gave to Lady Jessica.

A rather minor yet important point missed in the movie.
 
Momoa called for a directors cut, Denis shoots that down. Completely disagree with that snobbish stance. I mean I get it if it's a clear money grab that doesn't offer anything additional, but it's clear to fans of the book that there are things missing that were important to the story but cut for runtime and would really be an extended cut for the fans, not a money grab.

Man, this was a great movie. Despite it being 2hr30m, it went by fast. Glad to have HBO Max to watch it at home since, as much as this would have been a really really good experience in a theater, my partner is mostly deaf and getting the device for captions at a theater has only ever been a nightmare. We got to enjoy our favorite food and drinks, did not have to pay for tickets for all four of us or have to worry about idiots ruining this one.
 
I liked the movie fine, just didn't think it was that memorable. Dune is one of my favorite books and the best parts are all the details of each character and their back story which this movie didn't have time to delve into. The other issue I think was the Villains didn't quite have the edge they should have. It's always tough to compare anything to LOTR, but this movie just pales in comparison when it comes to the bad guys. I think they could still run the book into 3 movies if they want to and just spend the next movie fleshing out back story and character development. I guess ultimately my complaint is that the movie is about an hour short, which is not a complaint I usually have so it's hard to really criticize for it.
 
I saw the preview during the No Time to Die previews. Looked decent.

Plus, I'm pretty sure Dune spelled backwards is Nude.
 
Ugh, I want to see this but I do not want to go to the movie alone & I will not pay $15 for HBO Max.
Guess I wait for Netflix or Amazon Prime.

A "part 2" was not a done deal. If domestic box was in the teens or twenties I'm thinking it would not have happened.

Officially they've got 160M in it plus marketing (presumably a spend in the 100M neighborhood). Global take is as of today 223M so when all is said and done, even optimistically, they're going to take a loss on the books but since it looks like the movie was very successful on Max they're comfortable a sequel will preform favorably if windowed. Covid is likely not to be a problem at the end of 2023.

but if they filmed back to back, we could have seen part 2 in 2022. 🙁
and the studio would have saved on some costs.

Read the book in the early 80s. . Looks like I'll have to re-watch Dune (1984) in 4K that was recently released .
Like mentioned, a TV mini-series with about 10 episodes would have been nice, maybe to fill in some details that were not shown.

Well, duh. The novel is everything, so go read it. Or, go hear it. I found the audiobooks a fun reprise. That said, "extremely accurate" is pretty high praise, at least from a nerd perspective.
Still want to see, but life is getting in the way atm.

An extended cut would be fantastic and really fill in some good stuff, but Denis is a snob when it comes to doing that.
 
I didn't care for it. Maybe if I had not read some of the books or been there to see the original 1984 film in the theaters I would have a different opinion. The Lynch film went farther along in the story and this one might have had slightly more detail but these two films are grossly different. And no, I did not see any TV serialization that SyFy put out so I cannot speak of it. I did enjoy the scenes that tried to convey the size and physical scale of the transport ships but that was about it.
 
Wow the HBO stream looked horrible. I decided to watch on the projector screen(1080p 120") and it was truly awful. I want to shell out for the blu ray when it comes time just to get mad again lol. I wish I had access to the bitrate data on that one sheesh.
