Every fuckin time I go to the movies there’s one asshole talking the whole time and multiple people glowing in the light of their phones. I’ll take my 65” OLED with peasant stereo speakers anytime to avoid that shit.
Move somewhere civilized?

Why would I leave New England, the only place in this country worth living in, just to go to the movies? Lol.
That's a good point.

I only go to the movies like a couple of times a year, but haven't had that issue much in this area.

People would tell a talker to be quiet.

Yeah I only go a couple times a year lately as well so my sample size is small .. but somehow it seems like it’s every single time. Maybe I need to find a theater in the burbs instead of downtown Boston. It’s worse than it used to be a decade ago with everyone so addicted to their smartphones these days that they can’t handle not looking for a couple hours. Then they get distracted and start talking etc etc. Maybe I’ll try again for this movie though, been looking forward to it for a while.

The NYC metro area has a far smaller talker and phone problem than anywhere else I've been, for whatever reason.

NYC doesn't even crack the top 50 most dangerous cities in the US https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/the-most-dangerous-cities-in-america/2/

It's more like New Yorkers are generally like, hey you do your thing, dress how you like, be outrageous, be quiet, whatever, just don't fuck around with the general vibe and all will be good. It's a pretty interesting metropolis.
You're literally describing my point. Don't fuck with the vibe of a silent viewing experience, and you won't get your ass kicked.

My extensive issues with how Nolan mixes his sound aside how he utilized it in the case of Dunkirk to ratchet up the tension and anxiety was extremely effective.
they brought in a crusty old vet who was at Dunkirk and gave him free tickets.

He said it was much louder than the actual battle.

It's an intangible that isn't just about violence. Of which there is enough. It's tough to explain unless you are there enough because there is no city like it.

I've been there, and (imho) it's about the possible expectation of violence. You know nobody (relatively speaking) is armed, so people are more willing to start shit if the need arises. Because of that, the need rarely arises.

Either way, I wouldn't start gabbing in a NYC theater.

It's more about living in the most dense city in America, lots of people, they are on top of each other a lot, so respect is given to make it work by most. They are crammed in this ship, and the thought is let's just keep it moving.

When I go see dune at the IMAX at Lincoln center I would have no fear of getting on my phone and getting beat up.

Verbally shamed maybe. But not beat up.

Baltimore I'd be worried about getting beat up.

In Baltimore you get shot just walking down the wrong street. No way I'd ever hit up a movie theater there.

Honestly, that preview is weak. Whole movie looks weak. That stupid Jason Mormo guy, always smiling every scene, ruins it right there. 1985 Dune FOR LIFE. It was pretty much perfect. Not perfect to the book, no... far from it. But a perfect stand-alone movie, which it was meant to be? Absofukinglutely. It was pure perfection...

Probably due to the increased likelihood of getting the shit kicked out of you in NYC.

What part of NYC?
No one is looking up from their phone long enough to get their brand new sneakers dirty kicking some strangers ass in most neighborhoods I know of.

I can't recall any part of NYC in the past 20+ years where I felt concerned for my safety. From nutjobs on the subway starting weird conversations to the drunk Staten Island and Long Island scum acting like jackasses after a hockey game.

I think i might have to do a walking tour to find a place to feel scared. I think the only time I feel nervous is when I have drive amongst those savages.

I was only referring specifically to upsetting many someones' days by talking in a theater.

The people who tend to start fist fights are the people who tend to talk in the theater.

That Venn diagram is pretty well known in academic circles.

The people who are first to complain about talkers and instigate fights are girlfriends, who are typically sitting next boyfriend's who regret agreeing to this particular date night. Especially when miss "Yo!!! Shut the fuck up" was just whisper-rambling on about her friends cousin during the first half of the damn movie and all you wanted to do was watch something on prime....

That's also a Venn diagram...

Dune tickets went on sale today - including for the IMAX at Lincoln Square in Manhattan on the 6 story screen apparently earlier today and I missed the boat. Randomly checked an hour ago though for some reason - and though missed getting tickets for Thursday night the 21st, and all the best seats were taken for most showings opening weekend, but snagged some pretty good seats for 4pm on the 22nd. 2/3 of the way up and about 9 seats off of center. When you are looking at a 6 story screen, you want to be further back so you don't have to look up so much, it gets pretty annoying pretty fast. It's pretty massive. $59 for two tix. First world problems. Get out at like 7pm and get a slamming bowl of ramen. Gonna be a good day.

Going to the newest Alamo location because all the other theaters here in Austin are shit. There is an IMAX conversion at the AMC Barton Creek but that theatre is in such totally deplorable condition that I'll never set foot in it again. The old school IMAX unit at the Bullock Museum doesn't do reserved seating so F that.

It's good to be looking forward to a great theatrical experience.

Last time I was at the theater Adam Driver died twice in yet another OK star wars movie.

This should be a lot better.

Just saw it on HBO Go, not really understanding the rave reviews. It’s a visually stunning film, but also generic and predictable. One of the chief complaints of the Lynch version is that its hard to follow what is going on if you haven’t read the book, and difficult to understand the political motivations of the various factions. I disagree. The Lynch version is quite efficient in setting up the universe. This version hits all the same notes as the Lynch version, just slower.

Take the opening. In the Lynch version, you have Princess Irulan as the narrator. In this version, its Chani.

In the Lynch version, I thought the shield training between Gurney and Paul was better paced and explained. The relationship between Leto and Jessica better defined. The role of the mentats better established, particularly the trusted advisor role that Thufir holds in House Atreides. Even the friendship between Duncan and Paul feels more genuine in the Lynch version. The actors in the Lynch version are more eccentric and chew up their scenes, but it honestly works for this universe.

Lynch had some missteps, mostly the weirding way, the inner thought monologues, some of the special effects, the handling of Feyd and the ending. The new version gets some stuff right, like the scale and design of the spaceships, lasguns, spice ha and the mysteriousness of the spacing guild.

I didn’t like most of the casting in this version, save the Fremen and the Harkonnens.

Overall, I would say the Lynch version, costume design and casting with the cinematography and special effects of the new version would be the perfect version of Dune.

Holy fuck this screen is more massive than I remember it.

The spiderman preview was in full IMAX size. It's spectacular. Even if I don't like this movie, it'll still be very pretty.

That's a normal theater IMAX preview on the screen. It gets much bigger

Let's goooo....
