well, apparently it did VERY well at Cannes. Standing ovation.

i have not yet forsaken the Cannes public so i will give it a shot, but i remain with healthy skepticism.

Who's wearing the armor in the trailers, the Fremen or foreigners?
There is one scene in the trailer where two armies clash in the desert in full heavy armor, with one of the armies emerging from the sand. One of the fighters raised his visor to reveal it’s Paul. Unless this either a dream sequence or one of the many raids that Paul leads against Harkonnen spice harvesting operations once they regain control of Arrakis.

Just borrow the trilogy and read it. Skip the rest.

I disagree I believe all 6 books written by Frank Herbert are worthwhile even if he will never tie up all of the loose threads left after Chapterhouse.

the other books are fanfiction pretty much.

I think I'm gonna brave the theater for this one, provided we're not on COVID Echo or whatever by then...

well guys, i have not had a chance to see it, but HOLY MOTHER OF FAKE REVIEWS, there is a hurricane of bullshit going on right now on IMDb, idk, 50+ reviews with 10/10 score all by brand new accounts with 1 review only. This does not look good, not at all.

Based on Villeneuve's track record I'm sure this will be good, can't wait to see it on the big screen next month.

Dune did about 36 million in limited international release, and of those country, many had lots of capacity restrictions. They are saying that is a good number. As far as reading viewer's impressions of the movie online, it's overwhelmingly positive. Also been watching some YouTubers reviews of the movie, from folks who are die hard Dune fanatics, to a couple who did not even read the book yet. They all liked the movie quite a bit. I'm feeling pretty good about this. Gonna go see it in Imax for sure.

Wasn't RT pushing 90%?
yes, but thats from the critics who were allowed a very early preview. in the past those people were selected because they were more likely to give positive reviews. I see no reason why it would be different today.

Doesnt matter. I won't sit still for 2 hours and 45 minutes. I'll wait till its streaming.

It'll stream on HBOMax the same day as release in the theaters.

I'll hopefully get tickets to the IMAX at Lincoln Center. The screen is 6 stories high, it's pretty fucking epic. Saw a couple docs there, including the IMAX Everest documentary, which was being filmed the same year John Krakauer was climbing the mountain for his book, Into Thin Air.

A lot of movies are fine to stream. A Villeneuve made Dune? No. Absolutely not.
Exactly. This is the kind of visual spectacle you find the absolute biggest screen near you showing it and go there. If you are lucky enough to live near Stuttgart in Germany, that's where the biggest IMAX screen in the world is. Go there.

Umm, if you buy a 42 in TV and sit in front of it, you get literally the exact same experience as going to the worlds largest screen and getting stuck in the middle of the theater. And if you get stuck too close, you cant see a god damn thing.

The only difference is the audio. They go speakers that could literally kill you.
I almost died watching Dunkirk.

You might get the same perspective but I would not agree you get the same experience. With reserved seating I haven't had a bad seat in many years so too close is a non-issue. Quality of image is also going to depend on what 42 inch TV you're looking at also and the stream.

I mean this is a pretty major one. I do not have a cinema level ATMOS array installed at my house.

I have 1750 Watt RMS of amplification behind my speaksers :colbert:

Shrug, I'll watch it in my underwear with actual food like everything else I watch at home.

It's definitely not the same experience. And as you pointed out, streams are compressed.

I mean I agree, putting on a good flick on a nice set at home, and a decent little home theatre sound system, is fantastic. Pour a drink, make snacks, scratch your balls in your jammies. But this is the kind of movie that really shows off what the big screen experience is about. In this case 6 stories of screen and the sound system to match it.

I do like a movie date as well. But Dune, this is the flick that begs for the theatre experience.
