As much as I thought the situation with DNF was absolutely ridiculous, I actually never expected something like that to happen. I also like the following sentence of the news article: «The company had infamously been working on Duke Nukem Forever over the past 13 years.». I think it'd rather have to be: «The company had infamously not been working on Duke Nukem Forever over the past 13 years.».

doubtful they gave up, they ran out of money. Not sure what they did for the past 13 years, but they have stayed receiving money to develope the game. Pretty damn impressive that after ohhh 4 or 5 years companies were still willing to invest in 3d Realms to keep them going. This is sad news. I don't care how long it's been in development I wanted to play it. And there has been video of people actually playing it. Not just pre-rendered "this is what it MIGHT look/play like. Sad sad news. I hope another developer picks it up, I would imagine they have a lot done. Enough to where another team could finish it up in a year or so.

That's too bad. I was looking forward to being completely underwhelmed when it was finally released.

Wow.. that sucks if it's actually true. But I don't get why they would just up and shut down the company if it was so close to being released.. or was it..

Maybe it was just a terrible game, or more than likely, half finished.

The demo vid that came out .. while not really impressive, looked like it could be a good 'ol shoot 'em up for giggles from any Duke fans. Am I surprised that after 13 years, they called it quits? Actually, yeah, you didn't call it quits for a decade and then just stop? Seriously?

Whoa...I never thought I would ever see the day when DNF was either released or canceled, we'll need something else to joke about when something is delayed.

They should release their work in progress as open source if no publisher is willing to pick them up.

I call shens on Shacknews.
They have been refuting rumors for years, then out of the blue they cancel it, and the first people they tell are a bunch of nobodies? They dont update their own website? Or issue an official press release?

Bull Fucking Shit!

I want an official statement from the source, I dont care about Shacknews. Its news when the developers say so, not until then.

Also, I would like to add a little personal gripe.
As many games as they've released since Duke3D, they could have just put out something half-assed just to get the franchise some interest, even if it stunk.
ID did it with Doom 3. EA does it with almost everything, same for Atari.
We could have had a mediocre Duke 4 a long time ago and been looking at Duke 5 or 6 by now.

Sounds like the last nail getting hammered in. What exactly did they do for over a decade?

What really blows my mind is that sequels are where the money is really made when it comes to PC games. Doom, Test Drive, Need for Speed, Quake, Call of Duty, the list of titles goes on and on and the name alone is worth money. We should have seen at least three full Duke Nukem 3D games by now and every one of them, even with a bad review, would have been a top seller. It just doesn't make sense to waste a franchise that was worth so much money. :(

You know its sad when even Team Fortress 2, Stalker, Half-Life 2, Windows Vista, Doom 3, and Neverwinter Nights even managed to finally be finished and this POS wasn't.

I'm surprised they were able to stay in the development stage of DNF for so long

it didn't seem like they had any software generating a revenue stream

If I were Take Two, I would fire 3D Realms, and hire a new studio to make DNF, from scratch if need be. They should've done this a long time ago actually. The Duke Nukem franchise is still worth something. 3D Realms isn't.

Duke Nukem "4" Will come out in some form and/or fashion in the future as Take 2 still owns the rights to the franchise but the game known as Duke Nukem Forever which has been in development for 13 years is officially dead.

The 3D Realms forums have been closed for posting for a while, interesting. I'd say I'm becoming much less skeptical about this. Well, it's a sad day :(
