I watched several shows on the construction and engineering of that building.
With some of the 'shortcuts' they made, I would be very concerned.

The construction crews were so inept that the foreman in charge was ready to quit.
They couldn't even build a cinder block wall properly in the basement.

Another thing was that as they were building up they noticed that it wasn't constructed properly so the upper floors were leaning further and further in. The solution they used was to add more thickness to the outer walls to make it work.

I see bad things for this towers future.

For more info for everyone:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burj_Dubai

Burj Dubai is being built primarily by immigrant engineers and workers from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, China and the Philippines. Press reports indicate that skilled carpenters at the site earn US$7.60/day, and laborers earn US$4.00.[

Anything new?

That was what the lead project manager said. They are using the cheapest labor and trying to build it the fastest possible. All the while they kept making changes as it went up, like adding floors after the foundation was already done.

I found a report from the jobsite last year:
According to one of the engineers, they have found thin cracks on the foundation of Burj Dubai. They are still examining the problem and the cause, but it has already slowed down the construction of the wings. They have coloured white the walls around lvl. 17 to be able to examine the cracks in depth. Sadly, that's not all, it seems that the last test of the facades failed as well, but they say it won't slow down the construction.

Uhm your building the worlds tallest building with unskilled workers and your only concern is it is finished on time ? I would think problems with the foundation would slow down construction.

I wish I could remember the guys name in the documentary. He was really getting pissed. They even installed large plate glass windows without any weather stripping in the frames, so it was just glass and metal. It all had to be taken down. I wouldn't think this building would be one you want to have a crew of 'learn on the job' workers.

Yep ! Thats this building.
They couldn't even do the foundation blocks.

Even more bad news:
Current news indicate that cladding is coming on Burj Dubai in June. Emaar Properties has applied for extra reinforcement to floor slabs, yet they deny that the slabs are defective. They have decided to increase the stiffness of the slabs to reinforce the long-term performance of the tower. Rumours were spreading that the floor slabs are under-engineered and have developed small cracks.

I guess the terrorists won't need a plane to bring it down.

SOM did the engineering of the Burj....somehow I suspect it was the contractor not them who f'd this up.

Probably so. Engineers only tell people how it should be done. The problem is getting the jobsite to listen, and in this case, they didn't .

Awesome looking, huge, but I wouldn't set foot anywhere near that thing. I'm sure the engineering was great, but I don't trust that anything was done right when building it!

I wouldn't be surprised if they had any problems.. Whats worse is that censorship is very prevalent here so if something is wrong, its very easy to hush it up .. No one would find out 😛.

I don't think i'd wanna be on the top floors at all.. Man, your only option is to jump out in case of a fire or whatever... Climbing down 2000 feet would be a pain!

Also, I doubt two planes will fly into Burj Dubai.. Dubai is the hub of terrorists, underworld gangsters so I doubt they'd screw themselves....lol

You could fly an A380 into it and it still wouldn't go down. Properly engineered and constructed skyscrapers don't go down if a single plane hits it. I guess that tells you something about the quality of the twin towers.

Besides, all you need to do to prevent another 9/11 is put about $50 worth of steel reinforcements on the cockpit door.
