My wife is a veterinarian. I wonder if she's a "real doctor"?

It's funny because I'm a lot more protective of her title than she is. She could care less what people call her, but I know she worked her ass off for that degree and I'll be damned if I'm going to let someone who knows better call her Mrs. My-last-name. As if her marrying me was the keystone accomplishment of her life.

Also it's strange how people see Dr. My-last-name written on something and they automatically assume that I'm the Dr. Nope, she's both the brains and the beauty in this relationship.

Well, all this time i just assumed she was an actual medical Dr., because the media often refers to her as Dr. Jill Biden.
Generally speaking if you are not a medical Dr., and you go around referring to yourself as a Dr. then you are probably an insecure phony.
That would be true for men or women or transgenders, before any of of the super-sensitive woke members of this forum get triggered.
You can get a PhD in Archeology. Does that give you the right to call yourself a doctor? Of course! Do you look like a jackass in doing so? Hmmm...

It's always funny to see people like you unknowingly out yourselves. I've been in software development for 15 years and have worked with PhD's in both computer science and math, they are always referred to as Dr. in a professional environment.

The "I got street smarts" crowd is very concerned about all these liberal college elites tossing terms around.

Meanwhile millions of mid wives around the world are busy creating new business cards.

Do you not understand this is just more hate from the right! Hate people of color , hate foreigners, hate the educated, hate science and don't forget the rights mantra of a decade ago that all teachers are bad teachers.

Some of you gals just get hysterical over these type of issues. It's quite comical. Outside of academia, it is tacky and pretentious to call yourself a Dr. if you're not some type of medical Dr. And if your doctorate is in "educational leadership"???? OMFG that's just hilarious. "Dr." indeed.

Awwww....sniff, sniff....won't anyone take my faux outrage seriously? I'm literally crying about someone else's accomplishments and how they choose to be addressed and how none of that affects me at all, yet my panties are in such a wad I have to open my mouth to piss, and I'm strangling myself I'm clutching my pearls so tightly!

Geez....such a stupid subject to obsess over. Tell me...what's your PhD in? Or is it that you have a medical degree and this just pisses you off to no end?

Absent either of those, just jealousy on your part. Hurts that that scary, bad woman achieved greater heights than you can ever achieve, right?

My daughter should have her doctorate in a year or so. I fully expect her to use Dr. in the professional world.

Let's see. She can perform surgeries. She has to diagnose patients that cannot tell her where it hurts. She has to be a specialist in many things, pain management, behavior, infectious disease, acute orthopedic injuries, cancer, and so on. Her education starts out with exactly the same training as human doctors, she just branched off into a specialty same as any other specialist. She has the same knowledge of biology and chemistry and has to perform continuing education to maintain her license. I'd call that doctoring.

(a) misogyny noted ("gals" _and_ "hysteria"? Overdoing the conservative fear-of-women there, no?)

(b) nobody here feels sufficiently strongly about the issue to write an op-ed in the WSJ about it, so maybe the comically-strong-feelings are more on your side?

(c) it's not just 'academia' it also depends on your culture (I believe it's different in Germany, for example). But my guess would be with Dr Biden it's to do with generation, class-background (perhaps? just a guess) and being married to someone so prominent - causing a need to push back against being seen as merely an appendage to one's husband. My friends with PhDs don't use the title, but they aren't married to nationally-famous figures. It doesn't seem that surprising to me in her case.

But it does seem a very odd thing for a conservative to make a big deal about, given the remarkable and multitudinous character flaws of your guy.

Dr. Kissinger, Dr. Strangelove, whichever one was real; it's getting hard to distinguish fact from fiction these days.

Lol PhD stands for Doctor of Philosophy. Anyone who gets a PhD can call themselves doctor.

I don't particularly care what tv program you got it from.
