For posterity, KaOTiK's quote is what that person's post originally said pre-edit. (not that the edit changed the attitude any. wow.)

Hey, Artista, you mad your internet connection sucks?

When I first booted the game up, while waiting I get a scrolling "line" of advertisements actually in the game. Really? Plus once you shut the game down a "pop up" window comes up pushing the latest specials. (I did go in and turn it off.) It is that invasive crap, that is turned on by default, that really bugs me but if you like all that forced advertisements then that is preference choice. I really dislike it.

I want all that STEAM crap to be background/practically invisible until I launch it. Otherwise I want to see a seamless game install and the game only running and nothing else.

I've never seen a scrolling line of advertisements in any of my Steam games.

You can't say they are forced advertisements when you can easily shut them off. Sure they are on by default, but they are at least relevant to gaming and the Steam platform. Its not like you are having Coke or Uncle Fred's Repair Shop shoved down your throat. I for one like having them there as they point out some good sales/deals I'd otherwise not have seen.

You don't like Steam which is perfectly fine, just don't use it. Go give Origin or Games for Windows Live a shot. No sense in complaining on a forum about it.

TL: DR - Don't use Steam if you don't like it.

Hey, Artista, you mad your internet connection sucks?

I am mad because I just posted my opinion and figured people could discuss it without calling names. I realized that by me calling names in return I was lowering myself to his level. I do not like it when I am just posting or in real life just minding my own business and someone goes out of their way to insult and mess with me. I do not bother anyone and want to the same in return.

Anyway I realized the error of my ways, reported this to a moderator and let them warn everyone involved. Since I erred in my ways just as well I am sure I got one coming as well. (Though I tried to correct it by editing the comment.)

I guess you can't politely disagree? Go cry me a river you bitch.

Well I reported this post and your previous one to the moderators. I suppose now both our behaviors and this thread are up for review by a moderator.

I have never had a problem with Steam except for Metro2033 which needed a small file copied to a folder.

If Steam didn't exist and the only game in town was EA's crappy dl service Origin then DVD would be the only way to go.

Damn I hate EA's Origin...crappy POS! ;)

I didn't think about it but guess I should have expected a couple of a$$holes to call names and/or make disparaging remarks. If you politely disagree that's fine. We all have different opinions, that is the way it is and that is fine as well. (No need to call names.)

Yes download speed is in part my internet connection but it also involves all the nodes in between as well. I suppose if I had a constant ~6-24MBPS download speed I would be happier.

I am not "old school" per say though I do prefer to have a dvd in hand. I would be happy with a game sent to me on a flash drive as well.

that line of advertisements when you launch the game is part of the game, not steam. Those are all the companies or technologies involved in making the game. yes it sucks, but it's like that in practically every game these days. its like the credits at the beginning of a movie.

never had a pop-up window show up after closing a game showing the latest games or deals. that usually only happens when you launch steam or if steam has been running for awhile it will sometimes pop up but its very rarely.

I may have confused the steam application and the game in regards to the pop up window. When I first launched the game (almost 99% sure) for the first time, a scrolling text on the screen about midway down was advertising things. Maybe it was the steam application not the game.

Now the game wont launch.

Anyway I guess digital media is for some folks and the old style "in your hand" dvd/cd/blue ray methods are for others.

huh? the games cost the same as retail or less. wtf are you talking about?

What I am saying is any product or service builds into it the costs that are associated with the business, service or product.

STEAM has to get profit somewhere, perhaps through partner advertising, perhaps through the games that they sell. In other words a "free service" isnt free, someone has to pay and in part
anyone who has bought a product from them has paid for the "free" service.

I didn't say they are the same as retail I just said that it costs something and part of that cost is build into the product they are selling. (Games in this case.)

Hope that clarify's the issue.

I've come full circle on Steam.

My first experience with Steam was terrible. I bought a retail CD/DVD but still had to use Steam to get it to work. It took days and I was beyond pissed. I think this was with Half Life back in the day. Hated the whole experience!

Now I love Steam. I generally get a new fancy game computer every year or two and with Steam it is no trouble to download games to a new computer. In fact I just bought Far Cry and FC2 on Steam just so they will always be easily available (this in spite of already having optical disk copies). Steam is like an online cloud backup for your games.

Disks are a pain in the neck to keep track of and they go out of date, while Steam games tend to be updated to work on newer systems.

I've noticed some games (BF3 for example) force you to download the DLC whether you bought it or not. Kind of irritating when it's >2gb.

I'm an interesting mix I guess.

On one hand, I absolutely love the physical medium. I love my old PC game boxes from before they were shrunk down, and I love having booklets and the discs...

jI8X7.jpg
(most of the old schoolin'est of them are hidden behind the first couple layers)

And I really like having a physical disc and case for the movies that are my favorites. I've recently acquired a pretty decent blu-ray collection as seen here:

GHJ29.jpg

But at the same time, I have embraced Steam. I registered for it in January 2004, it came out in Sep 2003. I could've started then but I resisted for a little while because I really disliked the mandatory nature of it, etc...

it rubbed me the wrong way. And don't get me wrong, since then I've had plenty of times where Steam pissed me off in one way or another.

but overall it's been a good experience, here's my collection now:

(290 games)

I'm a sick, sick man.

I'm a fan of Steam.

I'm not a fan of DSL.

Or games that are shipped on a disc that aren't even complete -- rather, you are forced into a 0-day patch.

You did say something before that and I quote it in a previous post. In regards to me cleaning up my posts, I just realized that I was just lowering myself to your level by letting my anger get the best of me. I therefore took corrective action. You are not worth it and I will not waste anymore time on responding to you.

Yes I did report it, reported this as well, and we both may have some sort of corrective action coming.

In regards to me being a bitch...I can only say it is easy for a small person like you to sit and run their mouth here on a forum.

You are not worth my effort typing this and will be my last response to you.

Then I tried to start the game and it tells me it will take thirty minutes to "prepare" the game to launch! WTF!? (I have a new gaming rig so its not my machine!)

Plus all the news, advertising and other crap they hand you.

Used games from Amazon and other places make it almost painless and not much more expensive to get a good used PC game.

Make mine DVD. (next time and forever)

1) some is probably setting files up, some is doing a data integrity check. The odd game still needs it even after you have several installed. And if you need to do patches, then it takes longer. No idea why it does not do it in a better way.

2) true, but then it is not that hard to set it up so it loads to your "game's installed" screen instead.

3) except that DRM is aiming to kill that market off. Once registered to an account with the online DRM, the game's serial key is mostly useless. The only time it is not is when proving to tech support that you do actually own the game.

4) DVD is nice, if you live somewhere with easy access to them, but now days, with an increasing number of games wanting some form of online DRM/account, they are loosing their importance as you still have to patch the game once installed anyway.

Last time I had to install off a DVD, it took 45 minutes.

Point #2 - I would have to buy and install a DVD drive in order to install something off a DVD.

No thanks.

once you shut the game down a "pop up" window comes up pushing the latest specials.

1) which "booted the game up" part? the one where it is checking your game files? as that comes from the server hosting the data files you are connected to. It is to help pay for the data providing servers as those servers are not directly under valve's control. ISPs ask to be allowed to host them.

If in the actual game itself, then you need to complain about the game writers/publishers as steam has no control on that part.

2) true, it can be annoying, but then I have it set to only game released things and not everything. Getting a heads up once in a while (about as often as it triggers for me) is acceptable. I have a bigger issue with having to pay more than the US for my games (and still get charged US dollars, so not a exchange rate issue).

I just posted my opinion and figured people could discuss it

given the amount of time that steam has been around, did this "topic" needed to be rehashed again?

I take it this is the first time you have used steam OP? if you find it not to your liking, then you can safley say you know to avoid it in future. May I also recomment you avoid Origion (EA's version of steam), any game titled "for windows live" (Microsofts's online DRM system) and I think any ubisoft games as they are ment to be expanding their online DRM into a possible third distribution system.

There are probably others worth avoiding if the steam style experence has been that negitive, but they do not come to mind currently.

I thought a forum was where you actually could share a opinion and discuss the positives and negatives, etc, etc about most anything?

generally yes, but then their are some topics that are warn thin or are under the heading of "religious debate" like asking who makes a better car / cpu / ect.

Thanks!

if you're the OP, I would just say maybe give Steam a little more of a chance... but I fully understand where you're coming from on this.

Btw, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is good! A legit successor to the original, which is one of my absolute favorites. Did you ever play Thief: The Dark Project? That's my absolute favorite game, I even made a custom poster of it and framed it:

I was always of the "I want a physical disc" wagon, but I have changed that thought now since I buy most of my games on Steam Sales. In my case I just don't have the space to keep the physical boxes of so many games and would rather not worry about keeping a disc in mint condition.
