Water is the enemy, no matter what. Washing with special soap just isn't gonna do it.

When I'm working on cars, I have to wear latex gloves pretty much all the time during the winter. Must minimize hand-washing as much as possible. A few good scrubs and the backs of my hands actually start to bleed.

Best remedy is just hand lotion. Which I hate...I just put it on the back sides of my hands (applied liberally) and let it soak in.

It would be hard to beat my hands for being dry - and I use all sorts of lotions. I carry a roll of bandage stuff with me at all times. All I did this morning was tapped a desk like a drum roll, and thought, "oh crap" as I felt the wetness. Finger split wide open & covered it and its neighbor in blood. 30 seconds later, it was wrapped. So far, the most I've had to have bandaged was 8 fingers this winter. Yesterday, it was 4 fingers, today it's 5.

Ouch. And I thought the few dry skin spots on my face was bad.

I have dry skin on my face all winter - because of the low humidity / dry air... I scratch my eyelids really bad in my sleep. Humidifier doesn't help much. No lotion no matter how thick or thin seems to help since it irritates it and burns. You know what works best? Good ole Vaseline.

And drink more water.

Even better is Aquaphor which also heals your skin.

Tried it - didn't seem to help me for some reason. I know the texture is similar. Maybe the extra ingredients irritated.

weird, my wife loves it since i introduced it to her. I use it instead of chapstick on my lips.

As stated, the soap won't matter. Chances are you have hard water and once you rinse the soap off, the minerals from the water stay on your skin. Good quality lotion (there are many) will help but you have to use it a few times a day at least.

I've had to resort to putting vaseline or some other heavy lotion on and then wearing latex gloves to bed. A few nights of that, using lotion throughout the day will usually bring my hands back. But if you miss a day, back to split fingers.
