DOOM updated with Vulkan support

First, that last sentence is just plain silly. Of course the percent difference matters.

Even if the 1070 still wins overall? I guess I just don't see a potential 1070 customer going "hmm, it's only 25% faster than the 480 so maybe I should get the 480 instead."

That is what price/performance is all about.

Nowadays other metrics like Perf/W matter just as much, or all those 960 owners would have been better off with 380s and 280Xs for the same price instead.

If something was 1% faster but 100% more expensive would you buy it because it's still faster.

I wouldn't, but someone would if that gave them bragging rights of "the fastest card."

Heck we know some people on this forum bought Titan Xs, which is 5% faster than a stock 980 ti for hundreds of dollars more. Some people will pay almost anything for the fastest card overall.

What you're saying is in complete agreement with what I'm saying. The RX 480 is getting enough benefit from DX12/Vulkan that it is significantly exceeding it's average relative performance to the GTX 1070.

Average relative Directx 11 performance maybe, it seems right on the nose for Directx 12 performance.

Nice CPU utilization as well

id is specifically recommending against using Vulkan under Windows 7 with 2GB NVIDIA cards, which rules out some early Kepler cards
This GTX 680 is looking worse all the time!!!

(actually it runs Doom great in OGL at 1080p anyway. And it looks good too so actually not that bothered. Still mildly irksome though)

hmm, if vulkan becomes THE thing for games, I might finally upgrade my ivy cpu. that cpu utilization is crazy good.

@sable if ogl works for you why change it 😛 stick with ogl.

Please tell me they added crossfire support?

of course not! They said there were gonna add sli a while back and Nvidia forces AFR2 by default on it now but it stutters like crazy still.

I have been a multi-gpu user since 2007 on at least 1 rig, but this one may be my last. getting really tired of this. Could always rely on Nvidia to be mostly on time before with the profiles, but even they aren't keeping up with it anymore.

1070 is about twice the price of the 480.

No perf/watt isn't very important. Yes all of those 960 owners would have been better off buying AMD as their cards could still be used today.

Even in the original opengl tests the 960 was outdone by the 380:

And thats when AMD cards were doing much worse overall vs Nvidia in OpenGL.

I guess my dreams of 4K gaming will continue until Vega is released. Sad.

Just played a round. The texture streaming seems to be quicker in Vulkan. Performance is a bit harder for me to notice, I'm pretty much locked at 60 fps in both render paths, could probably up the settings some more in Vulkan. I don't think I'll notice even higher settings in this game though...

1070 is about twice the price of the 480.

When was the last time that the ratio of perf/$ scaled linearly? Even the 980ti wasn't linear in this regard. You always end up paying more for smaller gains the higher up you get. And people do it, too - too many issues with Crossfire and SLI, as well as general power concerns. A lot of people would rather have one card than two. I know it's the reason that I won't own a 480 - as nice as they look, I don't want CF.

Yeah, but it's faster. So if you need faster it's the only choice.

GPUs have always been a worse value the higher up the scale you went. The GTX 980 ti was a freakshow in that regard.
Eh? The 980Ti was double the price of 390 and no way near double performance.

The 1070 is in fact not actually double the price of the 480 since the only 480 that can be compared is the 8GB one.

The loss in perf/$ is less going from 480 to 1070 than going from 390 to 980Ti.

Then you aren't in the market for a 480 anyway. If performance is your #1 goal you aren't looking at a $200-250 card.

My point is, its very hard to UPSELL someone to a 1070 from a 480 when it is almost twice the price for only 25% more performance.

Anyway very off topic, just wanted to point out that trying to compare performance on a $200-250 card vs $400-450 one is silly.

in vulkan for doom at 1080p:

rx 480 = 77% of an nvidia 1070, for around half the price.

That might widen again once nvidia goes into panic mode and tasks their scores/hundreds of engineers to micro optimize the things gcn is doing automatically with their hardware schedulers, but for now it stands.

If you want more total performance, then of course the 1070 will be it, but let's stop pretending performance considerations are always as binary as more performance = buy for all people.

If something is close enough and much less money, many people might break there instead of paying more. This will be made even more salient once the faster custom amd cards start arriving in the 250-299 price window. If there was a 299 1450MHz custom 480 that was right on the heels of a stock 1070, that might be enough to sway many people to save a hundred bucks (yes a hundred plus, we still don't see base costs for founder edition cluster #$% pricing).

This is a fantastic result for amd, and it helps them in all considerations aside from max performance ONLY crowds for a given budget.

why are people comparing 480 to 1070? totally different price segments. like 200$ differences. people should be trying out 1070 and 1080 and see if there are any gains, that is what is important if you own one.

I am now curious about 1060's fps in doom. now that would be interesting.

Just going to leave this here.

280x updated with vulkan comparison... over double.

When people say amd cards have longer legs and performance over time, this is what people can point to.
that is crazy. how the hell does that work? even the draw calls showed by majincry doesn't have this much improvement.

is this what we can expect performance wise in vulkan? would be so nutty, and I love it.

I'd love to see a 960 in those same exact settings. Something seems really off there...

Maybe just poorer openGL support from AMD drivers. Vulkan and DX12 drivers are supposed to be tremendously simpler than previous DX and OpenGL drivers which need many per-game fixes and hacks.

To be fair, that was not consistent, just one area. The guy who posted in the reddit thread said in the foundry area it was more like a 40% gain.

Still, being able to up to double and beyond the fps of a game with an api switch is pretty damn good. I eagerly await to see the gains nvidia makes once async is enabled in the driver.

CPU bottleneck isn't a factor anymore I guess. People getting insane increases.
