DOOM updated with Vulkan support

didn't Nvidia show the 1080 running Doom with Vulkan as if it was a big deal before the 1080 launch? and now it looks like they have 0 gains with it!? 😵

Why would you be worried? Maybe Nvidia's OpenGL and Directx 11 drivers were just THAT good.

That doesn't explain why there's only a 25% difference between an RX 480 and a 1070. Clearly Vulkans benefits for AMD are greater than what can be explained by OpenGL driver optimization.

Could you please not try to turn this into an AMD vs NV discussion? Thanks.

We know that Maxwell GPUs don't really benefit from Async Compute, but Pascal GPUs seem to. Hope they get support in for Pascal users ASAP.

Why not? AMD's gains are massive, while Nvidia's gainst are not so much. Imagine the other way around and the usual suspects will spam every where.

I am now worried about Nvidia. Neither Vulkan nor DX12 seems to help it in any meaningful way.

nVidia has substantially more capitals than AMD, you don't have to worry about them 🙂

Well the AMD gains include Async which is not enabled on the Nvidia path. maybe thats where all the AMD gains are coming from?

True, but the Vulkan codepath for NVIDIA hasn't been updated to take advantage of async compute. This might not matter for Maxwell and prior cards, but it should help with Pascal. How much it'll help remains to be seen.

This is great news for DOOM! Does it support CF/SLI in the Vulcan release?

Why worry?

The 1070 has 1/4th of the shaders cut, has the same memory bandwidth as the 480, uses less power and is still 35% faster.

They'll be allright.

The strange thing is why there are people with Maxwell and Kepler cards reporting gains with Vulkan...and then Guru3D finds none with a 1070. CPU?

So wait, is Vulkan/DX12 supposed to help those with a weak CPU or a strong CPU? I have a measly i5 3330. Will only update when the next generation comes out and get a whole new mobo+DDR4 RAM along with it.

It should help most on weaker cpus.

Both DX12 and Vulkan help with weaker CPUs more than high end ones.

The wars have to infect every thread. Let's see 1060 vs 480 Vulkan before anyone starts worrying about their brand. 1070 users are paying more money and getting more framerates. Though the lead being cut down compared to OpenGL and many DX11 games is noteworthy, it is not worrisome methinks.

Yes, we need to wait for a/c to be activated for NV cards in Doom before we can say NV is dead. 😀

😀

Anyway, guess I will continue to play the game in OpenGL 4.5 mode until they put out a Vulkan renderer that actually provides a performance boost. Not that it's really needed, GTX 1080 rips this game to shreds 🙂

I want to see Frametime analysis here. I find it difficult to believe that the 1070/180 truly gets no improvement from Vulkan. At the least I would expect smoother frametimes or higher minimums. Average FPS is not the whole story.

Sure it does. It seems like the 480 is pretty much exactly 25% slower than a 1070 when Directx 12 or Vulkan takes the driver bottleneck out of the picture.

We see that 25% pop up in Ashes in Directx 12 mode:

Warhammer also shows a near 25% difference in Directx 12 mode:

I don't know why that matter in the case of the 1070, it is still faster.

First, that last sentence is just plain silly. Of course the percent difference matters. That is what price/performance is all about. If something was 1% faster but 100% more expensive would you buy it because it's still faster.

What you're saying is in complete agreement with what I'm saying. The RX 480 is getting enough benefit from DX12/Vulkan that it is significantly exceeding it's average relative performance to the GTX 1070.

Also perf/watt is changing, it should be higher on DX-12/Vulkan.
