DOOM Closed MP Alpha

Who got in?

I did.

Server are going to be online from Friday 10/23 Midnight EST to Sunday 10/23 midnight EST.

First MP game I'll be playing in a looong time.

I'm in. This is the first prerelease demo I've actually been excited about. I didn't even play evolve or rainbow 6. Definitely going to play this one.

Bracing for the worst, but I guess i'll play it a bit with you guys. Also, anyone notice how serious they seem with the confidentiality of the alpha? Seems like they REALLY don't want us to talk about it.

got the code in an email and redeemed it on Steam and it said it worked but there's nothing to download. The website doesn't help either.

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? I redeemed the original code when I installed the NWO and got the alpha code the other day.

I'm in!

The e-mail said that "DOOM Closed Alpha" will automatically show up in my Steam library sometime before midnight tonight.

Well, I can't even play. Damn thing refuses to use my nVidia GPU - instead wants to run on the intel 4600 and complains an OGL feature is missing.

Oh well. 🙁

The alpha footage they showed (from WiseUp216's link above) seems alright to me. It's nothing we never saw from previous similar (rather, identical) games, but it's nothing we don't hate I suppose? I'm rather neutral about it for now. I'm not disliking what I see, but watching it doesn't scream "OMG! I'll definitely have to play that mode too!". I find the 'demon rune' mechanic to be somewhat interesting, it reminds me a bit of Battlefront's hero units (and that's probably the point, but instead it's demons of course).

I think that I would have preferred it, however, if the demon you spawn as would not stay in the team you were playing as, and would only serve a purpose of match 'disruption' on both teams (or, well, anyone of any of the two teams whom happens to be there when you are, as a demon that is). The fact that the demon remains in the same team will result in a 'race' to get it (probably) since it seems quite powerful and could make a difference between victory (from a near loss position) to hummmm... to complete slaughter? We'll see...

I'll probably (surely) stick to UT if I want my arena-style shooter fix. But I'm not saying that DOOM's alpha multi-player looks "bad" (I mean not just visually, also game-play wise). They still have months of testing/balancing/polishing/fixing/adding content so it might only improve from its current status.

Except way slower.

Slow, lumbering movement combined with quake-like maps and weapons. It just... doesn't mix.
Agreed. I wasn't remotely impressed with the single player trailer for exactly the same reason and am not buying into the hype at all on this one. I counted about 17 kills over the first 3.5 minutes in the video (1 per 12 seconds). That's "slow as treacle" compared to the original Doom's which was often averaging 1 kill per 1.5 seconds (I recently tested Doom2 in GZDoom and racked up 47 kills in 69s with just pistol & shutgun). Doom 4 has literally 8x slower gameplay in terms of enemy body count. Pace is way too slow, barely 3 monsters on screen at once (vs being surrounded by 20-40 of the originals), movement speed slower, turn speed slower, projectile speed seems slower, "game pauses whilst activating controller based weapon wheel" completely gives away who the "target audience" is, weaker enemies are fewer but more "bullet spongey" (a known design trick to "skew" the gameplay towards controllers as it results in less skill-based "twitch" precision turning required). The multi-player game may end up being mildly fun in a "Call of Doomty with UAC textures" sense, but "Doom 1-2" gameplay / speed it ain't even remotely like... :|

I didn't pre-order Wolfenstein:TNO, but is there any other way to get in? Or just wait till open beta?

I didnt preorder either. It said as long as you bought before May 2014 you could sign up for the alpha and I got in.

I watched the alpha vid posted above and it felt way too slow.

I think that pace would be great for the single player campaign, but I expect more liveliness out of a Quake/Doom MP experience.

I mean... just give the walking/running speeds a 20% boost across the board.

I watched the alpha gameplay footage too and thought it actually looked decent, and I'm not really into FPS arena-style games anymore (though I used to love Quakeworld and played a shitton of it). I guess it was a little slow but I'm a little interested in it now. I'd at least try it out a few times to see if I liked it.

just watched the video. gameplay is way too slow. c'mon this is supposed to be DOOM ffs. showing the pop up damage numbers remind me of asian first person shooters. bring back instant weapon switching. weapons sound under powered. curious if it'll have quakeworld or CPMA physics. i like the quad power up sound effect though 😀

Game is clearly designed for console/controller. Pace feels right with controller, but way too slow with mouse + keyboard. Graphics are meh. Much too slow to be a great PC multiplayer. Feels like Halo
