Its Doom for crying out loud.
Slow as treacle FPS gameplay "is" Doom in the same way 4.5hr long Deus Ex: The Fall for mobiles "is" Deus Ex (ie, cheap franchise name cash-in only)... In that earlier linked vid, I counted 35 kills over 6m (10s per kill) with most encounters being 2-5 enemies. I just fired up Doom 2 : achieved 47 kills in 69s (1.5s per kill) with just pistol & shotgun, and even by level 7 there were 25-30x simultaneous enemies in
room after
room. It's literally been slowed down by a whopping 85%, almost certainly done to accommodate controllers. A well known design trick is "fewer more bullet spongy enemies is easier for controllers than many weak enemies" as it eliminates most of the fast successive "wrist flicks" (ie, 2x 180 degree turns in 1s) that they simply can't handle. Likewise, narrowing the arc of attack has the same 'reduced turning' effect, eg, in early Doom games attacks were regularly coming from up to 240 degrees upon entering a room. Here, it's been watered down to mostly 45 degrees on an ultra-linear "railroady" path with many popping-up in almost the exact direction you'll already typically be facing). The game now has to be paused / slowed down whilst changing weapons with a weapon wheel, etc.
All the above compromises (and more) they've made to "fit" controllers stands out a mile. That stuff is just about acceptable for most slower cover-based shooters (and now so common-place in cross-platform games that many people don't even see it), but it just looks totally stupid on
the-whole-point-of-the-Doom / Quake-franchises-is-about-being-fast-paced stuff. If they get away with naming this comatose-level of gunplay / movement speed "Doom" 4, then I suggest Alien Isolation 2 should be renamed "Quake 5 Arena Turbo: Breakneck Edition", the franchise mis-naming disparity is just as comical...
gotta say man, you could not have used your 1000th post better.
Thanks. Just saying what a lot of other people are - this isn't Doom, it's a CoD clone with scripted finishing moves and some extra red paint as its "identity gimmick" seeking 'hype train' style free marketing from riding off the back of other games... :sneaky:
