No it looks like ass. Flat textures everywhere, no detail. If I wanted to play a game that looked like that I'd play a 20 year old game.

The quality of a game's graphics have a direct impact on my immersion and enjoyment.

Gorgeous? It looks worse than a lot of smart phone games. It's just a Q3 rip off from what I saw in that video but with ugly textures and even worse animation. Why would I pay for this when I could play Q3 online for free? I mean I see the appeal of the twitch game play, especially being from that generation of gamers that grew up on the quake series but I think the art direction they took is fugly. I showed it to a few friends and they thought it looked like some ugly lego game.

This looks fun. Kind of reminds me more of Quake than it does of Doom. Did Doom even have the quad/pent/eyes?

Well... I have opinions of the multiplayer but I guess I still have to keep them to myself.

I'll just say that I'm still very hyped for the single player campaign. Multiplayer was only ever going to be a small distraction from what I'm really interested in.

Maybe I'm just getting old, or maybe I played way too much Doom/Quake in my teens, but this style of multiplayer just doesn't hold my attention anymore.

it is nothing like Q3, or QL. it's faster, movement counts for more, the netcode is superb, it's by far the best AFPS available now.

but of course you want good graphics, which begs the question: what are you doing posting in a thread about a MP FPS.

  • BFG and Chainsaw aren't on the weapon wheel since they're used in specific scenarios, Chainsaw is on D-Pad down and BFG is on X. Seems like they're treating the BFG as a panic button.
  • Weapons have mods you can find, ex. a remote detonation mod for the rocket launcher
  • Plot premise seems similar to Doom 3. A character named Dr. Olivia Pierce appears on a video suggesting she unleashed the demons as some kind of religious cult thing.
  • On-screen enemy count isn't numbered but described as "a demon avalanche", "bloodbath"
  • Chainsaw is a one hit kill on most enemies, multiple on bigger enemies like the Mancubus, power cells are limited
  • Colored keycards and backtracking for secrets. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Some locations: Lazarus Facility, Martian surface, Titan's Realm (as seen on the cover)
  • Permanent character upgrades that allow you to swap weapons and mantle more quickly, increase ammo and health capacity
  • Swappable perk "runes", ex. one gives you a stackable temp speed boost after melee kills
  • Hell is more vertical than the UAC facility
  • Enemies have weak point, ex. the pinky demon is armored in front and soft in the butt
  • An enemy type only described as "a summoner"
  • As suspected, idTech 6 appears to be very similar to idTech 5 but with a completely new PBR renderer
  • Plans to offer "sliders and multi-sampling options" for PC players. Only time in the article PC is mentioned specifically.
  • Multiplayer mode called Warpath, an domination style mode where the control area drifts around the map
  • Clan Arena mode, this is just team Last Man Standing.
  • Swappable "hack modules" are earned through MP progression, ex. Supply Timer that shows spawn timers for pickups on screen. Apparently none of them throw off the competitive balance.
  • Apparently multiplayer has more guns than single player, including a "lightning gun", this might be GI assuming based on what was offered in the demo portions though.
  • Namedrops of old Doom WADs followed by statement implying that they won't be releasing mod tools outside of SnapMap because of accessibility consoles. seems like kind of a big fuck you.
  • Examples of modes made in SnapMap: tower defense, moddy single-player missions, VIP escorts, racing challenges
  • Moddable enemy AI to some extent
  • SnapMap stuff is all shared on SmartHub, categories like top rated and most played, user profiles, seems a lot like Mario Maker
  • All SnapMap creations are small instruction files, you can probably forget about custom textures and rooms and whatnot
  • Still spring release date

Yeah, the game just looks way too slow. Hopefully they sort all that out before the final release.
They sure need to, although "messed up core gameplay" isn't exactly a minor thing to be ironed out. From what I've seen so far, Solitare & Minesweeper have a pace that's more Doom-like than "Doom" 4... LOL. It's not even remotely the same game or gameplay. More like a weird hybrid of "Halo/CoD with UAC textures gets super-glued onto a Let's Play of someone playing Alien Isolation slowly with a controller" than anything seriously Doomy. :(

Like Evolve? That game was a steaming pile.

Evolve sucks if you don't like having to use strategy. I was watching someone that got really good at in on Twitch. It was amazing how much strategy there is to it. Especially when you are a hunter.

So is this basically just a reboot of the Doom story? I still think Doom 3 was decent. The story was interesting and I liked the PDA trope that exposed the plot, but the gameplay and worlds were just too repetitive. This had better be a continuation of the story and not just a rehash, otherwise it'll just be more of the same.

I will buy it no matter what. Its Doom for crying out loud. I do think I will lose interest in the fancy stomping of enemies and such. After a short while I'll just shoot people and not bother with the fancy head stomps. Part of me wishes I was 13 again so I could take great joy in ripping apart the enemies and maybe convince myself that hell and demons might be real. Getting lost in the game had a much more real feel to it back then when the game mattered more than real life to me in that moment.
I have long since left that cocoon, that warm, fuzzy place of ignorance and imagination. My only hope to ever return to such a virtual place of importance is for VR to take off and become an integral part of our lives. Then I can experience things in the virtual world again that actually matter to me, at least in that moment, and I will have become a butterfly of knowledge and beauty and will have come full circle in this life of endless possibilities.

Its Doom for crying out loud.
Slow as treacle FPS gameplay "is" Doom in the same way 4.5hr long Deus Ex: The Fall for mobiles "is" Deus Ex (ie, cheap franchise name cash-in only)... In that earlier linked vid, I counted 35 kills over 6m (10s per kill) with most encounters being 2-5 enemies. I just fired up Doom 2 : achieved 47 kills in 69s (1.5s per kill) with just pistol & shotgun, and even by level 7 there were 25-30x simultaneous enemies in room after room. It's literally been slowed down by a whopping 85%, almost certainly done to accommodate controllers. A well known design trick is "fewer more bullet spongy enemies is easier for controllers than many weak enemies" as it eliminates most of the fast successive "wrist flicks" (ie, 2x 180 degree turns in 1s) that they simply can't handle. Likewise, narrowing the arc of attack has the same 'reduced turning' effect, eg, in early Doom games attacks were regularly coming from up to 240 degrees upon entering a room. Here, it's been watered down to mostly 45 degrees on an ultra-linear "railroady" path with many popping-up in almost the exact direction you'll already typically be facing). The game now has to be paused / slowed down whilst changing weapons with a weapon wheel, etc.

All the above compromises (and more) they've made to "fit" controllers stands out a mile. That stuff is just about acceptable for most slower cover-based shooters (and now so common-place in cross-platform games that many people don't even see it), but it just looks totally stupid on the-whole-point-of-the-Doom / Quake-franchises-is-about-being-fast-paced stuff. If they get away with naming this comatose-level of gunplay / movement speed "Doom" 4, then I suggest Alien Isolation 2 should be renamed "Quake 5 Arena Turbo: Breakneck Edition", the franchise mis-naming disparity is just as comical... :D

gotta say man, you could not have used your 1000th post better.
Thanks. Just saying what a lot of other people are - this isn't Doom, it's a CoD clone with scripted finishing moves and some extra red paint as its "identity gimmick" seeking 'hype train' style free marketing from riding off the back of other games... :sneaky:
