Doom 3 piracy

I understand the lure to go to some p2p network and dowload the game for free but I have a real problem with it. Not only are you cheating the company out of like 2.5 million dollars(i saw a report that said like 50,000 copies have been illegally downloaded) but you hurting the genre that you love. Less money the developer makes, less money they spend upgrading the game. I play a couple nes roms and i try to find the actual copy of the game so it is legal. Any rom is illegal unless you own the game but i think you can have it 24 hours then you must delete it. But a brand new game is not like an nes game or even genesis or snes. Nintendo and genesis are not getting any money from the selling of used games but the publisher of doom 3 is and i would encourage people to think not only is it illegal but it also hurts the genre and game that you love playing. I am a christian but even if i werent, id like to think that i would feel the same way. Thank You for allowing my rant.

If you are pirating Doom 3 you are a dick. Period. Save your excuses why for someone who gives a crap.

smilin, it sounds like you are sayiing that to me, i almost got offended. The i saw you were directing it to those who pirate it. Lets take the morals out of it, you are hurting the game you love by doing it. I never really got into doom(a little to monotoness...wow spelled that wrong) but alot of people like it. If you buy the game, you are in essence saying to the developers, i like this game and please support it and make more. If you pirate it, you are saying i will play this for free and i still expect it to be supported even though i havent earned it.

I pre-ordered Doom3 months ago along with a bunch of other people I know. I wont receive it until tomorrow, so I got a copy from a friend who downloaded it, and he also had it pre-ordered several months ago. I really don't think they're taking that aspect of the game into account. Some people (like myself) just can't wait for it, even though we already shelled out $50+ for it.

"... rabid fans desperately trying to get their pasty hands on a copy."

As long as you don't return it and get a $50 refund, then i don't think there's anything wrong with what YOU have done. AT the end of the day you paid for it so all is cool.

The problem arises from all those ppl d/l'ing it and not actually buying it after they've 'tried it out' 😉 LOL

I think we can all agree those people need to die an excruciating and horrifying death.

Yeah downloading it and not buying it would suck.

But I don't really see anything wrong with taking it for a "test drive", especially if you're going to put your bones down on the counter in a few days.

I downloaded it yesterday and I've been testing it out. I try and do that with any game either through a legit demo or warezed from Usenet. I know it's not legal but hey, if the game is good I'm going to support the crew who made it and purchase it anyway.

I'm about 2 hours in and IMO it's a keeper. I've got it preordered at the local EB Games anyway but if it sucked I would've cancelled the order. I'll guess I'll have my legit copy sometime tomorrow. Of course, if the supply is low I'll just tell them to hold the order so some others can get their copy sooner.

The way I see it, I got the game early and id still gets my $55 or whatever it is (I'll try and pricematch).

If you like the game - buy it. That's the only way we're going to see a company spend years of development time to produce a product like this.

Well, that's what demos are for, and I know that the D3 demo isn't out yet. It still shouldn't justify illegally downloading the full game. However, I can see the argument of downloading it while you're waiting for your copy to arrive in the mail.

Yes poke their eyes out break their nose and tie their testicles to a high speed train.

I went out and got mine at BB tonight (at $44 it was a steal tho! 🙂 But yea, if you DL a game like D3, it's like a crime, not only in the legal sense, but in the gamer's point of view.

I'm buying it tomorrow. I have patience =)

PC developers moving onto crappy consoles is a huge problem triggered in part by this piracy... it has me worried since I'm primarily a PC gamer.

EDIT: Here's something to think about for all the "I'll download now and still pay" people. When you're downloading the game chances are you're uploading it to other users at the same time (BT). You're helping many others get the game, and many of those have no intention to pay.

I was starting to believe what you were saying (typing), but then you said you were a Christian.

{shakes head}

Come on now - theres no need for that.

I downloaded it today exclusively to test it on my hardware configuration. As it turns out, it is a good thing I did, because my current setup just cannot handle the game. I have a Northwood 3GHz / 1GB PC3200 / Ti4200, and at 640x480 low quality, I am getting 13fps. I plan on purchasing the game after I upgrade my video card.

I still think Activision should have just allowed stores to sell the game when they got it, instead of allowing time for the pirated version to spread.

That can't be right. Most be a software issue.

There is something messed up with config, because there is no way you should get anything that bad fps wise. Everyone agrees that a gf4 should be able to handle it.

Ah, you are correct, guys. I have been "out of the loop" for quite a while now when it comes to all things gaming, and I still had 3x.xx Detonators installed. I just upgraded to the latest version and it makes a world of difference. Thanks.

To those that justify themselves by saying they're giving warez a 'test drive' before purchasing it, i say BS. Maybe once in a blue moon you might buy a game you've already downloaded, or you need a key to play online, but it's easier just to say "I finished the game, and it was good, but not good enough for a collection. So i'll just save my money for a videocard purchase." etc etc

If you're going to commit a crime, then commit it. Don't justify all this bullsh1t. Just be honest and say "Yes i download warez. I don't care if i'm stealing, if i'm taking away from the developers."

That said, the numbers on how much warez really hurt the industry is BS as well. Just because 50,000 people have downloaded the game, doesn't mean those 50,000 people would have bought the game if a download wasn't available. Some people download because they're curious, others just because they're a sort of packrat, and download whatever they can, others because they don't have the money for the actual purchase of course, and if a download wasn't available, these people wouldn't have been customers anyways.

But i do feel for id for having the game warez already. It's a singleplayer game, so there isn't much incentive for the warez kiddies to buy the game once they've downloaded it.

Yeah my main deterrent from piracy is that if it keeps becoming more and more wide spread to just DL the games then eventually games will be console only 🙁 .

all I know is regardless of piracy I would get the game legally just to have a shot at the multiplayer and future mods...droooool
