Definite automatic buy for D3 and HL2.

Minor disappointment is D3 mission co-op only for Xbox and non for PC. :(

I was looking forward to sharing the fear with my lan.

Your buddy works at best buy for a reason, my guess is because radio shack turned him down.
Actually, best buy has such a high interest in potential employees that they stopped hiring people under 21. I wanted a summer job there but they turned me down. :p

I was too young, never mind that I know more about electronics than the fools they have working in their TV/videogame/PC departments.

Heh, quite the deal...

Given everything I've been reading on the game pages, I'd say my buddy is tellin' the truth!

You are all missing the point. Its not Doom3 that will be the biggest thing that comes out of its' release. It is the engine. How many games were spawned off of the quake engine? Think about where games will go once they are allowed to release games that are up in the next level. Its about time to bring these new cards back to 1024x768! ;)

$55 aint bad at all. Wolf was the same and it bascially sucked. I think I paid that for WCIII also. I paid $64 for CivIII pre release and really disappoited

Reviews may not be everything, but ign usually has a solid grasp on things. Besides, I've played both demos. Graphics are great, but the AI is completely abysmal.

Agree, I played the demo and got bored pretty quick. I like a good shooter, but games like Pain Killer and Serious Sam where they just throw a bunch of guys at you get boring IMO. I like a little bit of tactics, FarCry was really fun. From what I understand, they slowed Doom3 down a little bit to add to the tension of the game. Sounds good to me.

Ouch.

Last game I paid more than $35 for was Diablo II, and I played that for like 18 months straight.

Most games are on sale somewhere shortly after release, for instance Joint Operations was like $27 at Fry's today. But I think Doom 3 and HL2 will NOT be discounted much for a while.

Hahaha. I would be suprised if I couldn't run it at 1600x1200. With 16x AF most likely.

I wouldnt put painkiller in the same fighting ring as D3. I know D3 isnt out yet, but I expect there to be an actual plot in D3 with better AI. Not just monsters running at you blindly.

Painkiller is a fun game, great graphics - tons of secrets too - you can blow through and shoot everything in sight and just try to find the next level/exit, but you miss out on quite a bit if you do that - and the AI is significantly improved with some of the recent patches - the boss characters are tons of fun too. Also, Painkiller DOES NOT use the Crytek engine.

Guys, not to anger anyone, but I played STALKER at E3, and other than the sniper weapon, I wasn't impressed at all - it was multiplayer, and although the weather effects were wonderful - they had the time greatly accelerated, so the sun would set every few minutes, which was a cool effect, but I was really let down - the single player looked great in the demo room, but I think the jury is still out on this one.

No retail chain has their Doom 3 copies already - your buddy may be looking at the pre-buy boxes or some promo material, but they don't have the real thing yet. Good friends of mine are software buyers for two of the largest retail companies in North America - and there is simply no truth in your buddies' claims.

I'm not going to get into the Doom3 vs HL2 thing - if you aren't anxiously awaiting both games, then you really aren't a fan of the genre - there are quite possibly the two biggest PC game releases of all time!

Finally, the clown that said Halo 2 looks better than D3? Maybe if you are comparing the X-Box versions side by side, but trust me when I tell you that the excitement around the Doom 3 launch has little to do with the X-box version.

Maybe so. But i was mainly refering to the spawns of this game. Aka: what will come off from the engine. This game is just the first of gradually demanding games.

Also August 3rd is supposed to be the release date.

Sadly I could care less, I don't have a card that can play the game :(. (seriously, won't even play the game) When I first decided to buy one of the $500 cards three months ago I never thought I'd have Doom 3 before the card. Just nuts.

PC GAMER gave it a 94%, it's really tempting me to preorder today.
Never paid over $30 for a game, but theres a first for everything...

Considering all the fan art out there, I have my doubts that the PC Gamer cover is real.

I don't believe you. Sorry, just think that's total BS!

I dont see why people are crazy over half life 2, as it does nothing graphically Farcry hasnt done, and the origonal Half Life was a broing overrated game.

And what is so great about Doom 3? I remember back in the day people were like, yea you'll need a GEFORCE 3!!!! to run this game well... Yea it has great lighting effects and graphics, but what kind of gameplay is it going to have? Farcry had an ok single player, with moderate action, mostly just walking and going ooo, and ahh, and a lousy multi player. I sure hope doom 3 will be better.

The reason half-life was and still is the most played game is because of its great multiplayer gameplay and great mods like counterstrike and teamfortress. Gameplay will always matter a lot more than graphics.

True Dat !!

I still play more Half Life (well, TFC) online than say Far Cry online. The better I got at TFC, the more fun it was.

I have actually enjoyed playing Far cry online, some. But mainly I just try to snag a sniper rifle and ammo before someone kills me. Once you get to a good sniping spot, it's fun.
