No texting plan here. I've got a pay as you go plan with AT&T. Unfortunately, just like Virgin Mobile, the minutes apparently expire after 3 months, which is usually faster than I use them. :\
I think texts are 10-20 cents each. It's an insane per-byte markup.

I also have Google Voice, but my sister has sent a lot of txts to the wrong number these last 3 months.

While she was away from mainland US, her calls always appeared as "UNKNOWN." My GV account would probably make her state her name every time (and I don't want to turn off that feature).

...so I couldn't suggest that she delete my regular number and use only GV.

I've blocked text messages. I refuse to pay that much for sending low-bandwidth messages that cost significantly less than the bandwidth of a call, yet are charged much more by the phone company. I just send IMs instead.

If I want to ask 15 people to come round I send one text, if I want to talk to someone while I'm in a meeting or at work I send a text, if I want someone to give me a list of something they send me a text.

Truth be told I use text messaging quite a bit to communicate with coworkers and family, as much as email, possibly more. It's an invaluable tool for me.

The Optimus V is great for an entry level device but it's hard to settle for one if you are used to high end Android devices. Even my year and a half old Samsung Captivate was more than twice as powerful as the Optimus V and the Captivate feels underpowered next to my Galaxy S2.

I love the prices of Virgin Mobile's plan but until they offer a Galaxy S2 or Galaxy Nexus level device it isn't an option for me.

Until recently I did not. I did use Google Voice for text though. I refused to pay the disproportionately large fee that AT&T charges for texting in comparison to how much it costs to provide the service.

Also, LOL at the people who say "it's a phone, call them." You sound like cranky old men. It's a phone, why are you on the internet with it? It's not a computer, it's a phone! Get off my lawn!

The fact is that texting is an integral part of any phone; whether you choose to use it or not is up to you but it definitely has its place. I don't understand people who send tons of mass texts a day but people are often busy when you try to call and it's easier to just leave a message that they'll see when they are available. Ever call someone and hope it just goes to voicemail? Same thing. The other great thing about texts is there's a written record so you don't have to listen to the person's 2 minute long rambling message just to hear the phone number at the very end.

And like I said earlier, it's not the same as email because not everyone has email/data access on their phone, but anyone who has a phone made in the past ~8-10 years has text capability.

The Captivate has a modified ARM Cortex A8 CPU that is roughly twice as fast clock per clock as the ARM 11 CPU in the Optimus V. Combine that with the fact that the Captivate is clocked at 1GHz vs 600 MHz for the Optimus and the Captivate is easily twice as fast.

Did not realize this until after I sent him many urgent texts with no response, I called him & was informed he had texting disabled.

see this is the problem with texting people do it for an immediate response case in point, you. you texted him wanting an IMMEDIATE response not once but as you said MANY times....

i have a rule with the wife and kids for texting when i am at work. if you have a question or need something, text or gchat me and ill respond when i can. IF ITS AN EMERGENCY CALL ME!
