I'm amazed people still have contract phone service, buy expensive smart phones and don't even use them. Talk about throwing money down the drain.

Unlimited data (no caps), unlimited messaging, 1,200 minutes, $45/month - all "fees" included. www.virginmobileusa.com

Truth be told I use text messaging quite a bit to communicate with coworkers and family, as much as email, possibly more. It's an invaluable tool for me.

I tried Virgin Mobile for about 2 weeks. I bought their "Best" phone, the Motorola Triumph. What a piece of crap that was. I'm now back on Sprint with a Samsung Galaxy S2.

I tried SO HARD to make Virgin Mobile work for me, but in the end, the phone was just horrible. The touchscreen was bad, the phone felt cheap, and it's stuck on Android 2.2.

Once you get used to a certain quality of phone, going backwards is extremely tough. I had no beef with their service, only their phone selection.

I have the Optimus V... previously I had an (original) HTC Evo 4G and before that an iPhone 3GS. I find the Optimus V every bit as capable as my past "high end" phones and I actually use it to work, day in and day out, it's not really a toy or entertainment device for me. That said, I see your point and phone selection is the biggest gripe people seem to have with flat rate phone service.

Metro PCS has better phone selection but at a slightly higher cost.

I blocked it, I still have old flip phone, Nokia, charge it once a week, small n light enough to hide in my pocket. I pay $50 a month for 2 lines and 600 shared mins, 11 year old plan!

I do not have any message plan and it costs 25 cents per message, every now and then people would send me a few and I didn't mind paying 2 - 3 dollars extra every month as compared to paying $10 to get a message plan, but then I started getting spams and two of my acquaintance started sending me messages a LOT, even after requesting them not to do it and their messages were really unimportant.

So here I am today, all incoming and outgoing messages BLOCKED.

I pay about 57 for 2 lines inc tax, unlimited data, voice, txt as long as it is withinthe local calling zone. And I rarely venture out of it.

And their coverage. During my early cell phone days I was on cricket, boy the quality felt like two Campbell soup cans with a string. Now on big red and I can get 3-4 bars in the freaking sierra mountains! ( nice feature if you like trout fishing like I do)

This is my big beef with companies charging for texting services. It's just IM. I can't imagine any extra infrastructure can justify the cost that companies charge for texting. No way.

It's sent in the control protocols that are already being exchanged. It hilarious and brilliant at the same time they would actually charge you for it. And yet people still pay because they just HAVE to text.

Hell, I had a pager in the 80s that would do this. Even had a keyboard, skypager I think it was.

You do know VM uses the Sprint network, right? And I get great coverage, but I don't know about the situation in mainland/continental US.

Also, my LG Optimus V may not be high-end, but it's still one of the best entry-level Android smartphones. It comes with the stock Android ROM and pretty much everything is fluid and very responsive. Battery life is very high, too. I only charge it after moderate use every two days or so. I only pay $45 a month for 1200 minutes and unlimited texts and data, not to mention the phone was mine for only $100.

The Triumph definitely has some problems; that's why I didn't buy it in the first place even though I had the money. With smartphones what you save over time matters more.

i dont have it, I dont want it. I'm not paying $20-30 a month to send tiny packets of data which should be considered "data" in the first place

I have it, but it pisses me off when people try to have an entire conversation with me texting. Just fucking call me if you had something to say that required more than 3 words.

This. I have it but hate typing on a cell phone.

My mother just recently started texting out of nowhere. Not only that, she got a blackberry and became instantly proficient in BBM.

My sister and I are convinced she is having an affair (on her asshole husband who already cheated on her a while ago so fuck him).

tldr: txt is good for cheating. :p

I don't mind if people don't have it. In fact I rarely assume people have it, and I didn't start doign so til 2010 or so.

I had a text plan since 2006 before they were gonna raise rates to $0.20 per text or something.... or was it 0.15 back then? But I think the shear # of people who assume you do is crazy. I gave out my cell a few times at work, and while most people call me, there are those that don't even know me that well and text a question.

What I still think is funny is that people use the AIM mobile to forward AIM to their phone via SMS. That's a waste of SMS. I suppose now that AT&T only offers unlimited or PPU text, it's ok, but back in the day of 200, 1000, 1500, and even with smartphones, there's no reason. Hello iPhone users? Why do you guys have push clients? Why feed the carriers even more money with useless texts when you can stay with IM? OH well.

The Optimus V is great for an entry level device but it's hard to settle for one if you are used to high end Android devices. Even my year and a half old Samsung Captivate was more than twice as powerful as the Optimus V and the Captivate feels underpowered next to my Galaxy S2.

I love the prices of Virgin Mobile's plan but until they offer a Galaxy S2 or Galaxy Nexus level device it isn't an option for me.

If you are upset over not having text, you would really be upset when you learned I don't even have a cell phone and don't miss not having one at all. I find talking on the phone to people annoying when it is just idle chat.

Yeah, but my point is that it having the stock Android ROM means it's just as or faster when it comes to responsiveness than a Samsung Galaxy (the first version, that is). The 512MB of RAM helps, too. I will say that I wish the screen size and resolution were higher, though. If you're looking to pay little and don't care too much about specs then it's hard to go wrong with Virgin Mobile, but for high-end smartphones you're out of luck unless you pay $400+ for the unlocked phone.
