Christ. The worst thing about cell phones is that it has instilled the idea in people that everybody needs to be readily available at all times. People answer their phones during dinner, at the movies, while they are driving, etc. Just because you have a phone with you does not mean you have to use it. If I'm sitting down to dinner and my phone rings, Fuck you, you can wait. Christ, 10years ago you would have had to wait for me to get my ass home before you could talk to me.

EHh, I've gotten used to texting over the last few years when I finally broke down and got a phone with a keyboard.

It's not as efficient as my IBM Model M, but it works decently enough.

That said, most of the older people in my family do not use txt at all (mom, grandparents, etc)

What's the difference?

One is made as a non-urgent message, FYI, or other time insensitive use. The other is real time conversation which is inefficient on a keyboard, especially when you have a perfectly capable transceiver on the same device.

This is my big beef with companies charging for texting services. It's just IM. I can't imagine any extra infrastructure can justify the cost that companies charge for texting. No way.

You gotta take Economics 101.
Americans almost never pay anything related to the cost of production. They pay based on the utility they will get from the item or service, or in some cases, perceived utility (cuz most Americans dont actually know what anything is really worth, especially their own time or money).

Paying extra for texting is more of a perceived utility than real utility. If you actually had to give up a quarter every time you texted somebody, you'd probably stop, because you'd finally realize what a pointless waste most texts are. But for some reason adding 10 dollars to your monthly bill doesnt seem as bad.

The principle is nice, yes. But in practice IM and email do the same thing, much better. And they are more feature rich, and dont cost per message.

Most people have phones capable of sending and receiving text messages, but some people just choose not to pay extra for a texting plan and tell people to please not text them since it costs them money every time.

This was me. I finally gave in and got a texting plan for my wife and I because all of our friends were texting us and it was costing us a lot of money each month.
