people that refuse to text, don't understand the technology...ie my parents. Texting is useful in this day and age, get with it!

I use a phone to make phone calls.. imagine that. If I wanted text, I'd write email from a computer.

No need for all these mechanical bells and whistles.

LOL. /facepalm

Christ. The worst thing about cell phones is that it has instilled the idea in people that everybody needs to be readily available at all times. People answer their phones during dinner, at the movies, while they are driving, etc. Just because you have a phone with you does not mean you have to use it. If I'm sitting down to dinner and my phone rings, Fuck you, you can wait. Christ, 10years ago you would have had to wait for me to get my ass home before you could talk to me.

I'm ok with texting, but the people I know don't abuse it. They use it like email, which is the correct use.

This.

People who use text messaging to chat like Yahoo Messenger/Google Talk/AIM (2-3 words, enter, 4 words, enter, etc) FAIL big time.

OP, you can't fault the poor for not being able to afford texting. Cell service could already be at the limit of their budgets.

I love me my texts though. So much easier than a phone call.

"...I don't even have a phone. If you want to talk to me you can come visit me at my cave. I had to walk over to my friend's house and have him type this post for me."

I don't have a texting plan but I use TextFree so I don't have to pay. I hate it when people text my normal number. $$$.

EHh, I've gotten used to texting over the last few years when I finally broke down and got a phone with a keyboard.

It's not as efficient as my IBM Model M, but it works decently enough.

That said, most of the older people in my family do not use txt at all (mom, grandparents, etc)

I have 250 per month and never use any of them. It's only an extra $5 per month though, so whatever.

What's the difference?

One is made as a non-urgent message, FYI, or other time insensitive use. The other is real time conversation which is inefficient on a keyboard, especially when you have a perfectly capable transceiver on the same device.

On their phone?
Everyone has it.

An active plan with texting?
Email is usually cheaper. Also easier. And it follows you if you change numbers.

This is my big beef with companies charging for texting services. It's just IM. I can't imagine any extra infrastructure can justify the cost that companies charge for texting. No way.

You gotta take Economics 101.
Americans almost never pay anything related to the cost of production. They pay based on the utility they will get from the item or service, or in some cases, perceived utility (cuz most Americans dont actually know what anything is really worth, especially their own time or money).

Paying extra for texting is more of a perceived utility than real utility. If you actually had to give up a quarter every time you texted somebody, you'd probably stop, because you'd finally realize what a pointless waste most texts are. But for some reason adding 10 dollars to your monthly bill doesnt seem as bad.

What's the difference?

#1:
- Dude, you there?
---------------Yeah, what's up
- We're hanging out tonight, you want to come?
---------------Sure, where?
- We'll be at that bar X next to the Y
---------------Yeah i know the place
- Around 9pm. ok?
---------------I'll be there
- See you there.
---------------Later

(that's a total of ten messages back and forth, using sms like a chat system/GTalk/YM/AIM/BBM)

#2:
- Dude, we'll be hanging out at bar X next to the Y tonight at 9pm. Come over if you want, it'll be fun.
---------------I'm in. I'll see you there.

(that's two total messages, of the exact same conversation)

I thought everyone knows the difference. I guess I was wrong :(

/End of rant
It's true Jesus doesn't have texting on his phone :D

aaand now I read the thread I'm like the 5th person to pick up on that, ugh!

And, OP, I still know people who don't own a cellphone AT ALL. Not just old people or kids, but like grown adults with money and jobs.

Texting? Nowadays people email and IM one another. Paying for texting is fail (though sometimes a necessary fail).

Texting is still useful. Great for sending a message to someone who might be at work and can't just have a phone conversation. Also great if you or the person on the other end are in a loud place and you can't hear each other, or if you're in a poor service area and you just need a few seconds of good service to get the message out.

google voice + prepaid data plan. 4 cents for 1mb of data. sending a text will probably cost me 50kb or less.

The principle is nice, yes. But in practice IM and email do the same thing, much better. And they are more feature rich, and dont cost per message.

Most people have phones capable of sending and receiving text messages, but some people just choose not to pay extra for a texting plan and tell people to please not text them since it costs them money every time.

This was me. I finally gave in and got a texting plan for my wife and I because all of our friends were texting us and it was costing us a lot of money each month.

Don't have texting? Hell, I don't have cell phones anymore.

We threw them away about 3 years ago...

LOL. Boomer, you brag about not having mobile phones like I brag about being at "The Catch"; Never enough for the bragger, way past once too many for others.
