.

Something remarkable for their age? Aren't most college teams the same age?

Yes most college teams are the same age, but they're at the top of the peak. They are playing against the best of the best in Division I and they did a damn good job. Pretty remarkable thing to do. I'd be proud to say I accomplished something as great as that.

so if they didn't play bball well, someone would be able to joke about them being nappy headed hos?

I'm a minority myself and I think this kind of thing has no place in our society.

shouldn't your last sentence be:
because i'm a minotiry myself, I think this kind of thing has no place in our society.

Umm...no.

I think the railroading of Imus for a stupid statement that was meant to entertain his audience should not get him fired. That is anti-American.

actually, if you analyze your sentence, why did you even feel the need to put in minority?
cause the assumption here is usually you're an american. and i think 99% of the people here are american.
so, why put minority? would it matter if you were white? would that mean your belief that this kind of thing has no place in our society doesn't count as much?

I really don't want to get into a debate here, but no it shouldn't matter. There are those here that might make a false assumption however, so any extra info can't hurt.

I predict that Imus, if he wants, will get another gig within a year. His show is too successful for another company not to offer one a better situation than what he lost at CBS.

false assumption about? false assumption that?
that you're a minority? well, that wouldn't be false. so it must be false assumption that you're a white.
basically, you're saying that if you were white, and you were to say "this kind of thing has no place in our society", people would brush it off, saying that it doesn't mean much. but if you're a minority it means a whole lot more?

my whole problem here is the double standard that goes on. apparently imus is white. basically, that means any statement he says against any ethnicity is wrong (unless he's a jew. but his nose isn't that big). cause apparently white people are racist when they make statements.
but if he were a minority (which is, apparently, any ethnicity that is non-white, cause i think white is still the majority in this country. but in some places, like california, hispanics are huge. i would say they're not really a minority. but apparently one still can't crack jokes at their expensive), he could make jokes about his own minority. and it'd be ok.
look at borat and jews. black people and all the things they call other blacks.

why does it matter if i were oriental and i called someone an oriental? the only reason it should matter would be if i didn't know it were a derogatory term, and just used it innocently. just as it should be ok if a old white lady called some chinese person an oriental, not meaning anything by it. but in our society it's not that. it's basically you can make fun of yourself, your own race, even if you are nothing like the rest of them (whitewashed, or however you want to put it), and white people.

and why is it ok to make fun of white people? i can't even think of derogatory terms for white people any more that aren't allowed? white trash? redneck? isn't that common parlance nowadays?
in nashville there's even a "white trash cafe". the people working there sure don't mind the term "white trash".

Exactly. It's great to not have the media hounding my tail whenever I say something inappropriate.

Unfortunately, Imus forgot that's what happens when you play the entertainment biz.

Negative. Imus targeted these girls precisely because they were in the spotlight and because he felt there was a profitable joke to be made.

Most definitely true. If not radio, some other media format.

Gawd, I've completely ignored this because I could give a rats ass, but it seems like everybody is talking about it. I guess I should read through this thread and get up to date. ;)

Did you even watch the clip of what he said? He wasn't even the one who initiated the "ho" comment. It was his producer/sidekick/whatever and Imus just went along with it and added "nappy-headed."

I don't hear anyone calling for that guy's head...

Since someone picked on Chris Rock in this thread, here's a youtube video of Mr. Rock..

Chris Rock on Rap Lyrics

"I love rap music but it's hard to defend this sh*t."

"We should all be ashamed of ourselves for liking these songs..."
Chris Rock is socially responsible, I appreciate him. Don't lump him together with the sh1t that is Imus.

Wow talk about making a mountain out of mole hill. Someone here needs a timeout. You are reading way too far into me throwing the fact that I'm a minority in my first little post. I already said it wasn't necessary. What more do you want from me? Would it make you feel better if I removed it? I already admitted that it shouldn't and doesn't matter, yet you still want to go on and on with some kind of debate here. What is your freaking problem?

Don't get upset about what I'm about to say, but I'm about to make an assumption about you. Guess what it is.

No doubt. Opie and Anthony had no problem getting a new show after they pissed off the catholics, although they had to wait for their contract to run out.

That's because you and I don't know the other guy's name. Or at least, the media doesn't care to include him.

qed, the American people don't know, and advertising dollars could care less if he were included. Imus is the name brand.

Imus goes after everybody and everything in as mean and nasty a way as possible. That's been his shtick forever. For people to all the sudden get up in arms now is one of the more mind-boggling aspects of this story.

Ok, this is just too funny. What is my opinion about this whole Imus debacle again? Enlighten me.

Feel free to add any other tidbit of information you know about me and my opinion of race relations on this board and in this country. Please throw in my thoughts on immigration reform as well.

He should know that it's easy to get burned when it comes to race. Unfortunate, but true in the world of marketing and advertising. Imus passed the point where the CBS and MSNBC figured he'd likely continue to be a liability and perhaps spew again. What company wants to advertise during the show of someone who's reputation isn't exactly on the rise?

When the "sole purpose is to make money" trumps the U.S. Constitution it's time to start kicking ass.

What does the constitution have to do with this?

Freedom of speech ring a bell? People like Sharpton want to determine who can say certain words, and the corporations by giving into their idiotic demands are actually enabling that to happen.

It should be required to actually understand the things you claim to hold so dear...

Please enlighten me then?

This is selective censorship. They are not trying to make record labels force their artists to stop calling women hos or using nappy, only white radio hosts. As has been pointed out there are plenty of black radio hosts who say just as bad of words and yet you don't see them losing their job and being publically condemned for their actions by these same people.

Yes it should be up to the corporations to allow or disallow what speech they want from their employees, and yes it was not a public forum where he said what he did, however the only reason they are firing the guy is because even bigger racists are trying to make it only right for blacks to use those words. The corporations, who are the ones who have control over freedom of speech in the media, are backing down to this pressure, and thereby limiting freedom of speech. If you don't agree with me, then fine, I can understand that, but the corporations should have just as much of a liability to defend their employees freedom of speech when they hired them for their opinions.[/quote]

I'm still trying to figure out which government entity is disallowing Imus from exercising his 1st amendment rights. Come back to me when you have one in mind. Until then, no matter what you say, no matter how much it makes sense to you, and no matter how eloquently you put it, this is not a Constitutional violation by any stretch of the imagination.
