Dolby Digital or DTS

With all this talk I want to make sure I'm properly hearing DTS with movies that support it on my computer.

Playing movies in MPC 6.4.8.9 using an Audigy 2 hooked up with 3 1/8" minis to a z-5500 5.1 set. Would that do it? Just watched HP4 today, it didn't even have an audio menu of any kind. Wonder what it used then?
 
what did the lcd for the 5500 say, did it say DTS digital, if it said prologic, the sound stream wasnt passed to the 5500 undecoded, make sure you enable spdif passthrough in souncard and dvd player

No I just left the sound system on 6 ch direct and was assuming MPC would be doing any necessary decoding.

honestly, how can any of you tell a difference? have you really sat down and listened to both streams from the same movie? why bother? either dd or dts sound awesome to me.

DTS is quite obviously louder than DD... beyond that you'd have to really listen with good equipment to tell any differences, but the volume difference is quite noticable.

Present.

It's most noticable on background music. There is more depth to the sound. specifically strings. That being said, most times the mixes themselves are different. Many times the DTS is mixed better...others the DD is.

If you want to have your Z-5500's decode the DTS (like I do) then you'll need to use SPDIF. At that point, the DTS light on the control pod will light up and you'll know its working right.
And, if the A2 drivers are anything like the X-Fi drivers, if the Creative drivers properly detect that you're decoding DTS or are decoding DTS, a small (DTS) logo will show briefly in the bottom right corner of your screen.

Well since I already have them hooked up via 6 ch direct to my Audigy 2, I'd prefer to let the software do the decoding if possible. I think MPC can do it, the question is IS it doing it.

MPC can be setup to decode or to output the raw DTS/DD for decoding either by the Creative drivers (which they will automatically do) or by the Z-5500 if you're using S/PDIF. What you don't want however, is for MPC to be downmixing it to 2-channel, and then the Creative drivers CMSS-3D'ing the ****** out of it to make it 5.1 again. Now, that would suck.

Hmm...I think that may have been how it was set up actually. 😱 OTOH, I DID only hear voices out of the center channel so I don't see how it was purely doing stereo. But who knows. Either way, in the audio options, I set it to: Decode straight to speakers: 3 Front + 2 Rear in MPC. Is that all that needs to be done?
 
Full bitrate DTS rocks. But if you've ever heard higher bitrate DD, it can be pretty good too.

I have a D-Theater DVHS deck, and the movies usually have a 576k DD track. Master and Commander rawks!!!!

That's correct. You're just listening to stereo at tht point. That is only used for receivers that don't support DTS.

As an aside I can't tell you how many people get a 8,000 dollar home theater and then have it setup wrong. no wide screen and still hooking up the DVD player with analog cables.

I know, it's so sad to see this but at the same time I can't help but laugh.
 
If I remember correctly DDS is Pro-logic which isn't really 5 disticnt channels as DTS is. The amp mixes the center channel from any sound that is heard in both frnt lft and rt speakers and sends it to the center channel. The rear speakers are stereo and their sound comes from anything playing in the frnt speakers that has echo. In DTS you have 5 disticnt channels where certain sounds come from rt frt, rt rr, lft frt, lft rr and center.
If you can't tell the difference you don't need DTS.
Isn't this correct ?

DD and DTS are both 5.1 discrete channels.

DTS-ES however can add a discrete rear channel for true 6.1

DD can have a rear channel (DD-EX), but it is matrixed from the surrounds.

Otherwise for normal 5.1 they both operate with 5 channels and a LFE channel (sub)
