I do it with mine but you have to have DTS dvd software player installed to do so. Other wise it will ony decode DD. Now if you have the optical out on your sound card it will pass through the DTS code directly to the Z5500 box and wont have to worry about what dvd software player you use.

And OH yeah. DTS for me and wtf is the poll????

Ahh okay. I use MPC which I believe does have DTS support. But my sound card (Audigy 2) does I think have optical out. Would I see any benefit to using that over the 6-channel direct and software DTS decoding?

A DTS soundtrack is over 500MB, the same one in Dolby Digital is around 120MB.

DTS is not as compressed as DD.

Nah either which way you will get it other then if you go with the optical outs your Controll pod will come up say DTS on it. But inorder for your controll pod to decode DD and DTS using the SB card you will have to go into the sound card propertiees and click off the button that has it decode that stuff and to let it pass through to the outside source.

I would use DTS, but my 5.1 home surround sound system only supports 5.1. It's hooked up to my dvd player by fiber optic.

huh? Do you mean it only supports Dolby Digital?
I'd like clarification on this as well.

More than 5.1 would be DTS ES, so 5.1 is sufficient for DTS...

most people won't be able to tell the difference on their sharp or GE home theater in a box from walmart for $150...

on my setup, the DTS version is louder at the same volume than the DD soundtrack...but quality wise, I honestly can't tell the difference...

DTS here. At this point a poll is useless as everyone capable of using it has voted DTS.

yep.. My receiver supports DTS so I use it, since its the best. DD sounds pretty darn good though too.

I don't really care. If there's DTS, I'll use it, if not, I'm happy with DD.
I 'back-up' all my DVDs in DD. I don't think DTS is worth the extra space.

sigh, will this never die? DTS is not better (nor worse) than DD in terms of sound quality. What DTS does do (wrongly in my book) is boosting db level as opposed to sticking to the right one. Known psychoacoustical effect of louder sound is making it appear to sound better. Look at spectrum analysis of decoded signal and you'll see DD is in fact closer to the original waveform. Coupled with inefficient use of space, DTS is inferior. Think about it, you want to reduce file size as much as possible while minimizing distortions of original signal. Both of them have weak points, they are just at different points of the spectrum.

When given the choice I use DTS because everyone seems to say it's better. However I doubt I could tell the difference between the two unless I really tried - and that is not something I want to spend my time doing :p

for some reason, it sounds better when i turn on the DTS > PCM feature on my DVD player.

When i do this, receiver doesnt show the DTS logo. So i guess receiver isnt receiving DTS signal when i turn on the DTS > PCM feature

That's correct. You're just listening to stereo at tht point. That is only used for receivers that don't support DTS.

As an aside I can't tell you how many people get a 8,000 dollar home theater and then have it setup wrong. no wide screen and still hooking up the DVD player with analog cables.
