I think that if I get married my wife is going to have to be a professional. I live in NJ so if I'd like to purchase a house worth $350,000 I'm going to need a wife that makes good money. My brother got married to a woman that works at a supermarket. How can she contribute income wise? He's happy so that's great, but I need a wife that's going to contribute at least half to what we have together. That is a new car(s), house, vacations, etc.. And this could only be obtained if she's a professional w/ a college degree.

Do you guys feel the same or would you rather have a wife that sits home and cleans. I say screw that... hire a maid for the weekends!!

Personally, I feel that she can make that choice herself.

So, you're saying, cleaning house, making food, and raising kids (taking them to soccer practice, to the Dr., etc.) is not work?

Be happy if she is happy... that's how I look at it. My wife has a college degree and is going to grad school soon. Would I be unhappy if she didnt work at all? No, just poor and stressed out all the time :)

thats hard to say... being a female, i dont know what i would do, especially if children came into the picture. both my FI and i really like "things" so i am sure we would both work if we didnt have any children.

IF there were kids, if at all possible, i would like to stay with them until they were in school. i ahve seen too many children get dumped in daycare. i want to be the one raising our kids, not some strangers.

True, but I don't care what you guys say... money is an issue in our society. It can get awefully expensive to live a nice life. I'm not suggesting that we all buy $150,000 sports cars, but when homes in NJ go on sale for an average price of $250,000 an higher then you can see why both parents need to work.

Of course she does. We are in this together and as such, share the responsibilities. We both care for our kids, both work to pay for things we want, etc. We both put our paychecks towards bills and the like.

Its a marriage where both partners commit equally. If my wife just stayed home with the kids, she wouldn't be sharing equally.

not married, but my mom works.

in fact, she makes significantly more than my dad. she pays the mortgage and car payments ($350,000-ish house in NJ, and 3 new cars), and my dad takes care of all the other bills + food shopping.

Yea.. in NJ there are an awefully lot of parents that dump their children in day care. Parents don't have a choice though... House and car payments, clothes, etc.. They all take valuable resources.

I disagree. I was born and raised in northern NJ and my mom did not work a day after I was born. When I was born my dad was working fulltime during the day and attending night school. It is possible to make it, but it requires many sacrifices.

Well I'm not suggesting that house wives are unequal slag. Housework can be difficult, tiring and they get no respect.. I wouldn't want to do housework. Hell I have to clean my apartment but I've been screwing around all day.

Housewives work as well but they just contribute differently. I don't think that is viable alternative anymore though. It's too damn expensive.

No way he is trolling. He parties a lot and has sex with lots of women. Text
He's 34 and this is how he thinks things have to be with his future spouse? I guessed he was maybe 20 or so from the tone of the first post.

The only problem I have with two married professionals out there in the workplace kicking ass 8 hours a day making a ton of money to keep up with the Jones' is the time they ARE NOT spending with their children.

Do you really want to ship your toddler/youngster to day care for 10 hrs a day so you can both work?
Do you want to drop your kid off at a before care school program at 7am and after care till 5 at school so you can both work?

I see it everyday and it makes me sad.:(
Is it really worth it?
Think about it, I think not!!!

The OP is obviously still young, give him a break.....

EDIT: OMFG  the OP is 34, you are older than me..........grow up or good luck finding anyone to grow old with you WOW

hate to break it to you but $350k won't go to far in NJ. you are talking small townhouse for that. unless you are talking way south jersey. and even near voorhees, $350k ain't gettin you much.

I don't think my parents did me any disservice by both working.

being a so-called "latch key kid" forces you to learn responsibility -- no one is around to, say, force me to do my homework or clean my room. plus, I'm kinda proud of the fact that my mom is such an ardent femenist.

yawn... jealous? Admit it.

:D
Pffffft. Yeah. You hit the nail on the head there.

Trust me, you're either never going to get married or your marriage will be utter sh*t if you revolve everything around the income. I can't believe you're 34 and have such an shallow outlook, but then this is ATOT.
