she indubitably does - dual income is a must around here.

She actually made almost as much as me until I got my phatty promotion. 😉 She's in IT for an investment firm.

Must suck to be a nerd. I've probably done more in my short life then you have ever dreamed about. And how old are you? 22? 23? You should be out exercising or whatever.. but I understand. You life consist of the Anandtech forums and that's about it.

pretty sad.
Dissing people for being on the internet, while you yourself are on the internet, is getting old.

Especially when the dissing is so far off the mark as to be comical.

Oh yeah...I'm a 22 year-old shut-in who lives in the basement and never does anything. 😛

I think that if I get married my wife is going to have to be a professional. I live in NJ so if I'd like to purchase a house worth $350,000 I'm going to need a wife that makes good money. My brother got married to a woman that works at a supermarket. How can she contribute income wise? He's happy so that's great, but I need a wife that's going to contribute at least half to what we have together. That is a new car(s), house, vacations, etc.. And this could only be obtained if she's a professional w/ a college degree.

Do you guys feel the same or would you rather have a wife that sits home and cleans. I say screw that... hire a maid for the weekends!!

LOL...I don't see marriage in your near future, or at least one that will last.

Ditto. My wife is very driven to suceed and I like that in a woman. I help out with the housework in the evenings and weekends. I do most of the cooking as well. We are thinking of getting a maid though. Too much on our plates right now to do everything.

When I got married I was of the firm mind that my wife would always work. My wife was a prefessional at the time and mostly in agreement with that, with the exception for a year off following the birth of any children, which I thought was sensible.

Since then and following the birth of our daughter 3 years ago, my wife has not worked. She enjoys her time immensely raising and caring for our daughter. I am quite content with that and we even have a maid 5 days a week (we live in Mexico and maids are quite cheap, less than $12.00 a day). I expect she'll probably go back to work once the kids (we are trying for another but no luck yet) are in school because she's not the type to just sit around the house; she does enjoy working and doing things. Even so, were she to decide not to work at all, I would be okay with that too just as long as she stays out of my hair (I work at home).

How much does $12 buy you in Mexico ? I can't believe they would work for so cheap...

You work at home too... I fully expect to be Mr. Mom because I do work at home... how'd you get out of daddy chores full time in addition because it's already convenient ?

There is no way I'd get married again to someone who didn't work.

My ex-wife and I had no children... one day after I got home from work she announced that she was going to go "part time" at work so she could stay home more. This of course, after she just bought a new car and still had 5-6k of credit card debt. I told her no. She said she needed more time to do her "projects" and that she would have time to keep up the house. As it was, she never cleaned, never did laundry, didn't take care of the yard and cooked half the time. I am so glad she is completely out of my life.

My problem is now, most women I meet want a much nicer (expensive) house than I want, they want nicer cars, vacations, etc. There's no way I can provide all that on my income and when you're a self employed salesman, your income isn't always consistant. I would want my wife to stay home the first few years if we were to have a child, but after that she'd be back to work.

I have to agree with Skoorb. I don't think it's too hard to stay at home all day and do things. I work now, clean half the house, take care of the yard, cook and I still have time. Maybe I'll marry someone who doesn't want to stay home, so I can stay home and play video games all day. 😀

i would say she would have to work... or do something.. assuming no kids are involved. what else would she do all day long... shop? heh. granted, if i made gazillions, then she probably could just do that.

but, when kids get involved.. it's a whole nothing story... them things are a 24/7 job....

Yeah, $12.00 isn't much but it's the going rate for a maid 6 - 8 hours a day. Don't ask me how that can be, I'm American; I just go along with the local customs. My wife is Mexican so when it comes to these kind of things, I just follow her lead.

As for all the daddy chores, there really isn't too many. I do the grunt work around the house that typically requires any lifting of 50 pounds or more, but everything else is done by someone else.

I used to be Mr. Fix-it, but labor is so cheap here that whenever anything goes wrong in the house, even a leaky faucet, we just get someone to fix it for us. We have a general laborer, a gardener, a plumber, and an electrician that maintain the house. I've really gotten bad about it but now I always tend to think, "Why do it myself when I can get someone to do it for me for a few dollars?" Besides, I like supporting the local economy. 🙂

no, my wife doesn't work right now.
but that doesn't have anything to do with why i wanted *her* to be my wife.

most women do this all the time, why should it be different for men?
