Frankly I don't care what my wife does, but I don't think I'd be attracted to someone who doesn't have some drive. Whatever her field is, she just has to have some ambition, and be smart.

Unfortunately, this reflects the common belief that stay at home mom's are just lazy and have no ambition. When in reality, they simply have different priorities. I don't think I would ever be attracted to a woman who placed money and work as higher priorities than our children.

I'd love for my wife to be a stay @ home mom, economic concerns have made this very difficult for all but the most dedicated/frugal folks in the middle income range to accomplish.

Maybe it's greed or maybe were just so damn materialistic? In NJ anyway, everyone wants that $400,000 Mc Mansion, 2 Suv's with the sports car, pool or sauna in the back yard, etc.
Well you don't need to be everyone. Personally I find somebody exceedingly pathetic if their main goal in life revolves around the accumulation of soul-less objects. Those same people are probably fat with bad marriages too. But I guess it all makes it worth it if you're driving a $40k SUV. What a sorry priority!
One thing I've noticed about money is that one's lifestyle expands or contracts quite readily around whatever the budget is,
Deadon - that's why getting out of debt almost never is achieved by increasing income. One must first learn how to live with the income they have.

I think that in a lot of cases that is true. Not all, but a great many. Hell, I know two women who want to get pregnant and I firmly believe that a lot of that is so that they can just stop working and have a good excuse. I think that because they're lazier than dog-sh*t and it seems inline with their personality.

It gets better, those working soccer moms that drive a $40K SUV rarely have any retirement savings, they're going to try to live on Social Security when they retire. Guess who's pocket their SS $ is going to come out of?

Yup
I'm 40 have a lot in retirement savings, 10 years left on the mortgage AND a Pension Plan through work.
But the grasshoppers will spend the ants money. Difference is in this parable the grasshoppers get to vote, so instead of dying come winter they will force the ants to share.
Nice 🙂

That's one reason why we're so similar desy, we're nearly the same age... I'm 43.

No way he is trolling. He parties a lot and has sex with lots of women. Text
He's 34 and this is how he thinks things have to be with his future spouse? I guessed he was maybe 20 or so from the tone of the first post.

Must suck to be a nerd. I've probably done more in my short life then you have ever dreamed about. And how old are you? 22? 23? You should be out exercising or whatever.. but I understand. You life consist of the Anandtech forums and that's about it.

pretty sad.

WHOOOOOAAA! You're 34? OMG. To tell you honestly, when I first read your post I thought you were like, in high school. You can make all the plans you like, but marriage, career, kids.... you can't really always plan for. I say, just do what makes you happy. Plus, $350k won't buy you much in NJ; it'll buy you a nice cardboard box, here in DC.

I married the woman I love. She also happens to work.

This is the correct attitude. Income is nothing next to love.

Love is one thing. But a marriage takes financial planning, sacrificies and common goals in addition to love.

As in any partnership, communication it vital for success. All I'm saying is getting married for money is very bad idea. Its sad that so many people do.

Pretty much anywhere $350k in america will get you more than a cardboard box. He never said he wanted a palacial pad either.

I don't think he ever set a date for a wife, kids, career ...

If more people would stay on the issues instead of adding to them....
