Does P90X work?

I need to get back to it, but it is extremely difficult to dedicate 6 days/week to it. I stopped after a couple weeks due to coming down with a nasty flu and then straining/dislocating a shoulder (not due to working out). I leave the house around 8:30 and get home around 7:00 p.m., have two dogs, a toddler, and my wife is 8 months pregnant. It doesn't leave a ton of time to dedicate 1+ hours to daily.

I enjoyed it while doing it, but not sure I have the energy/ability to continue waking up around 4:30 - 5:00 just to work out six days/week.

A buddy of mine swears buy it. He's a shorter guy, but weighed about 230 (if I recall). Through a weight loss competition sponsored where I work, with a moderate diet and doing P90X exclusively, he lost nearly 50lbs in 90 days. Granted, his results were pretty extreme, but he put a helluva lot of dedication into it. That said, I also jumped on board, though no where near as intent as he was, and lost a good 20lbs over the same time period.

The nice thing about p90x is the direction you're given which allows you to workout the majority of your muscle groups, which allows you to stress different parts of your body on different days, which makes it more doable to workout every day. It's a pretty solid workout, and for the average joe who isn't into bulking up, it's a great way to get some decent cardio as well as maintain a toned figure.

ok, so i just completed the first dvd and i have to say that this one hour of workout was the best and most intense i've ever had. and i've been going to the gym for decades. i can easily see this ripping you up if u can stick with it. i doubt i'll be able to follow it all, but i'm sure as hell gonna try.
has anyone bought the supplements? any word on them?

I wouldn't buy any of the P90X supplements, they are way to over priced. It's a money making scheme.
There is no reason to get the P90X protein bars, there are cheaper bars and other and other ways to boost your protein intake if needed. I would recommend a recovery drink, just not the over priced P90X one. You can get accelerade for about half the cost. Another popular alternative to the Recovery drink is fat free chocolate milk. What you're looking for in a recovery drink is something with a 4/1 carb/protein ratio, both accelerade and fat free chocolate milk fit the requirement.

Whatcha gotta remember is to... "Do your best, and forget the rest!" 🙂

Dang that guy can be cheesy, but it sure is one helluva workout.

Was going to get it a few months ago, ended up going with the Insanity, same company puts it out. Holy shit the initial "test" workout had me wore out. p90x is if you want to lose some weight and put on some muscle. Insanity if you want to tone up and not put on muscle. From what I read p90x's crazy hard to complete, but was told that Insanity's even more grueling.

I like PowerBar Protein Plus bars. They're a tad expensive, about $1.50 each but they have 23 grams of protein per bar and about 300 calories depending on the flavor you get. The peanut butter ones are my favorite. They're not a Reece's Cup, but for something that does your body some good they're quite tasty. I also tried the Chocolate Crisp and those are good if you want something more chocolatey.

I'm early in the program (1st month) but I freakin love it. Former college athlete, not overweight, lanky, 44 yrs old, and am used to busting my butt in workouts. Got lazy the last few years, with sporadic starts and stops but no real commitment or plan. P90X gave me the plan I need, the intensity I like, and the variation on a daily basis to keep it fun. I know how to eat pretty well, but am not a nazi about eating - I need to enjoy my life. I'm in a better mood every day (my wife noticed). One thing I will say is a beginner or ego-driven type should not attempt to keep up with Tony and the gang. Great form, max intensity, and a willingness to put your ego aside in order to avoid injury. You may want to extend the warmups a bit longer than Tony - I do that for my morning workouts. My appetite has gone up markedly, but I'm looking and feeling leaner. Its a commitment, but damnit I'm not letting age get the better of me, y'know? Also, I have zero desire to gain bulk for bulk's sake, so not putting on a lot of mass is fine with me. Its all about functional strength and endurance at this point in my life.

hmm..guess i started it off wrong. only had the dvds and not the guide. guess you're not supposed to follow it as 1 dvd per day? gotta find that guide online and start over again

Clif Builder bars are slightly more fat and less protein, but taste a ton better than PowerBars, imo.
270cal
8g Fat (30&#37😉
30g Carbs (40%)
20g Protein (30%)

Try them out if you can't stomach normal protein bars. (not directed to Jeff)

Been doing p90x for over a year now, missing workouts due to school/work, but overall it works. A warning though:

1) You will not get huge with this program, I've gotten bigger, but I went in with the mindset I will be huge 1-1.5 years later, nope.
2) You will not get ripped or get the same results as people in the videos unless you stick to the program and eat the diet that comes with it and the supplements. I have a flat stomach and a fit body, but no abs or defined shoulders as much as I want 🙁, probably due to my meh diet. I have what I call a 2 pack 😛

For people who are interested, p90x works like this:

Monday = Weight Lifting
Tuesday = Some form of cardio
Wednesday = Weight Lifting
Thursday = Yoga (not girl yoga, it's hard)
Friday = Weights
Saturday = some form of cardio
Sunday = Rest

You do this for 3 weeks, then recovery week, and it's still hard during recovery you do 6 serious workouts that mostly focus on stuff that do not require weights.

While Insanity is full out cardio/intervals, you will def not gain any muscles, but you will get more ripped if you do insanity as it focuses completely on burning fat and abs/core workouts.

I'm currently doing a mix of both, replaced the p90x cardio workouts with insanity because after a round or two of p90x, the cardio stuff they do becomes a joke (sorry to newbies just starting 🙁 plyo and cardio x become too easy believe me)

If you got any questions feel free to PM me.
