Me not giving a shit also applies to not giving a shit about who is bigger and stronger than me, although I'm sure losing the pad is the single most important factor is getting bigger and stronger.

Are we going to compare our CPU overclocks next to see whose faster?

Well, it's one thing to critque people when asked...it's another thing to go heckling people...

So enlighten us...why are the gloves a crutch? I just came back from the gym where one of the regulars was putting up 315 on the bench press WITH GLOVES! Next time, I want to tell him why he's doing it wrong...

Good use of your time...

so 315 is a big bench?

so what would you think if you went to the gym and someone was repping this weight out for a more than a few?

if he benched 315 with gloves I would ask him how much he could squat with the pad....in the smith machine.... with his gloves on.

Look out guys! We've got a tough guy in here. I bet he can lift more than any of us and doesn't even use crutches like clamps or proper hydration!

And I love how he implies 315 is not a big bench! I would wager that is in the top 1% of GYM goers.

As far as using the pad, I think when I started squatting again, I had some discomfort like the first 3 or 4 times I did it, after that it was fine. So, just tough it out a few times and you will be fine.

I love how defensive people get about the pad use. If you look good in a dress then go for it.

I never said anything about tough. I am big; and I am strong. If you think 3 plates puts you in the 1%, well I guess I was a 1%er at 17....

Seriously though, I am all for people getting in and lifting. Things like the pad just portray a bit about how serious one is about their workouts. I give people at my gym a hard time about things, yet we all stay friendly. Its all in good fun.

I don't think people are getting that defensive about the pad use discussion. It's just your need to be a dick in every post that is tiring.

Everyone's goals are different. When a person sets up to squat and throws the pad on, its pretty obvious they aren't all that serious about their training. Kind of like the girl that texts on her phone for the duration of her "run".... If pointing stuff like that out makes me a dick, I can live with it

I love how using a pad means you're not serious. Perhaps you are serious and a beginner? Or perhaps you don't go to the gym to impress douche bags who think they are superior because they don't use a pad?

What is that... 385? I would think it's an even more awesome bench...esp since that's about twice as much as what I can do.

I just hope I don't get a notice from my gym that they are bumping up my rate because I'm not serious enough about training.

In all seriousness, I went to gym yesterday with the intention of trying to squat without a pad...of course the one single power in the entire gym was taken the whole time I was there by two brahs.

BTW Zivic, what's your handle on bb.com?

Zivic I think is spending a little too much time in /fit/ on 4chan I think.

Pointing stuff out doesn't make you a dick, it makes you not realize people who don't know you don't give a crap about what you say. You are wasting your breath on people who don't think anything of you.

When it comes to any exercise related discussions, those regarding bar placement and pad usage are always the most heated.

I tend to care a little about what guys like Zivic, purbeast0, pantlegz1, and Koing say, because they are all bigger and stronger than I am. I don't know them personally, but I just get the vibe from their posts that they are as strong as they say. A couple of those guys also do/did keep detailed logs to back up their claims. I would guess that people care as much about me caring about what Zivic says as they care about what he says :p.

That being said, I squat low bar, so I've not needed to use a pad, and my 5RM is only 245 pounds at a body weight of 168. Ultimately, I think the most important thing is that one is squatting, and doing so with challenging weight and good form - with or without a pad.

I don't go on Bb.com much. Not sure if I have ever posted there. Zivman would be my screen name.

I'm talking about giving unsolicited advice, or straight up heckling people at a gym. Nobody cares for that.

Different story when people are asking for advice and it is given in a respectful manner.

From what Zivic has said in this thread, a novice asking him for advice would get a "stop using gloves girly man! You will never be pumped up with them." or some equal attempt at condescending remark that 99% of people would ignore.

If I posted a thread and was like "check out my new rack" or "just hit this new 3RM" with a video and someone came in and was like "OMG you are not using compression shorts. You are so amateur" I'd get a good chuckle before I used some harsh words to ask them to leave the thread.

Personally, I don't talk to anyone at my gym except for the occasional courtesy question / response about a set up being used.

I go to a small gym and most people know/talk to me. When I am lifting, most times people are engaging in conversation with me; asking me about working out, about the weights I am using and lifts I am doing.

People will see me bench and then I get asked a lot -> how do I increase my bench? my response is to squat and dead lift more.... to which I get something like: I used to squat till I hurt my back, or I don't want to get as big as you. Well, no worries, if you don't squat and dead lift, your chances are pretty slim that you would.

to me, that is more insulting them me razzing them about gloves or the pads. I have spent nearly two decades lifting to get to where I am... though the last 5 yrs haven't been as good to me as I would have liked ;)

I am not degrading when I give "pointers" and generally I won't give unsolicited advise - > unless I see something very dangerous; like the 135 lb guy coming in off the street and throwing 3 plates on the bench (with his gloves on).

here is what I saw last sunday when I was doing deadlifts. so, would some friendly advise offered to this gentleman be something that would be frowned upon, or would the forum members think it would be justified? ... you can see me in the yellow tank filming :0

I was setup doing deads. You can see my bar in the vid (got up to 485 that day)... anyways, this guy comes in, loads up the smith machine all smug as I am going through my sets. Like he is my lifting peer or something. He then proceeds to do what you see in the vid, and no, you aren't missing anything. 5 sets of, um, incline bumps????

what is hard to see in the vid is the guy has cloth hand towels folded up and wrapped around the bar in addition to his gloves ....

You have good bench press form, but in both of the videos you don't finish the last rep. Your spotter does for you :p.

But who am I to talk shit when I can only rep out 160. I envy you, but hopefully I'll catch up to you within the next couple of years.

I have chilled out a bit on my bench since the fall. Was having a lot of shoulder impingement. I am focusing more on squats and deads now... And I am down 30 lbs since I sent you that vid I need to drop another 5-10 and I will be good.

In all honesty, I agree with Zivic in that I get annoyed when people have horrible form at the gym. Not because their form directly affects me, but because these are usually the same folks who A) refuse to re-rack their weights, which is just sh!tty behavior, B) are always bragging about how much they can "lift," C) never wipe their equipment up after themselves despite being the (unjustifiably) sweatiest mofos in the gym, and D) ALWAYS slam their whopping 50# dumbbells on the floor after doing a set of incline or military presses.

Look, ultimately, I don't care what you do at the gym. If you want to tell your friends that you can "bench" 315 despite the fact that your ROM is 3", have at it. But when your lame workout habits start to impinge on my ability to finish my own workout, I get pissed. And as Zivic has said, these folks (perhaps unfortunately) exponentially tend to use pads when squatting.

+1
the pad is just a tool used to profile those people

Going fine without the pad now, up to 72.5kg, so thats my 6th workout without a pad, dosent hurt. I think it may have hurt previously because i was doing "high bar" without realizing and having it dig into my spine a bit, having the bar lower pretty much eliminates the discomfort.

So at what point can i make fun of people who use a pad? Do i have to also be able to lift more than them or what... im not sure of the rules on how that works :awe: j/k
