Does anyone still play Magic: The Gathering?

I've been playing the online a bit, but you have to pay to create an account and then buy "virtual cards" at the same price as real cards. Thanks, but no thanks.

I agree with you though, a lot of the new abilities were already there, but did not have names..ie..Ball Lightning had "haste" or Serra Angel had "vigilance".

They are easy to figure out for me, but to explain to someone who has never played before, it is tough remembering all of them.

This is sorta true

You buy an account for 10 dollars, but the account comes with 10 'tickets' which are used as currency in MTGO. so you are really paying for the 10 tickets to get cards, not so much an account. and the price fluctuations between paper and online cards are drastic. 2 friends and myself set up a bot to sell cards, I've have about 1.5k cards and total money i've spent is probably around 15 dollars, 10 for the account and 5 for me being dumb in the beginning.

Plus it is a lot easier to find games and cards on MTGO.

Stopped playing a long time ago. I don't remember the exact expansion but I think it might've been Ice Age. Had a kill blue deck and a white deck. Was working on a green deck before I stopped playing. I sold all of my cards for $200. I definitely could've made more but I just sold them to a neighbor and was happy to have some cash.

You can play MTG for free online with Apprentice. There's no type of lobby or matchmaking however, just direct IP to IP play so you need to know someone else who has it to play. It's a pretty basic interface, just provides you with all the cards and a play area. It's up to you to know and enforce the rules, doing upkeep, tapping/untapping, etc.

I've used Apprentice for a long time, it's great. I believe there is an IRC channel on magic-league.com

I've played on and off since 3rd edition. I built a $100 unlimited elf deck about 3 years ago that could get a 3-4 turn win. I'd love looking through the new cards to revise it. I sold all of my other cards.

that game was crack before warcraft (don't play wc, but I've heard). I used to fantasize about finding a big box of rare cards at a garage sale for cheap. I still have a bunch of cards, I wouldn't mind opening that box up w/ my kid someday so I will hang on to them. Fun as a casual game between friends, I never enjoyed playing in tourneys.

I played from Revised to 5th ed. I accumulated a decent amount of cards (which I still have) but never any of the power nine. I think the most valuable ones I have are Mirror Universe and Library of Alexandria. I had chances to buy moxes and lotus but never did. I have tons of cards in different languages that I picked up when I was overseas. You just have to know from the picture what the card is. I still have a 5 color sliver deck as well as a red direct damage goblin deck built up. I definitely had a blast playing back in the day but it certainly sucked up the time and money.

I also enjoyed that old computer game. I'll have to see if I can find a copy to play again. I thought it was pretty neat when I built a channel/fireball deck, played a computer opponent which duplicated the deck, and it actually figured out and used the combo against me.

Man that was crack back in High School. I played from around 3rd edition through Homelands. Sold my stuff a few years back.

Played a long time ago, back in 6th grade. A couple friends and I have recently started playing a little bit with the 10th edition stuff.

I still play, but with Magic The Gathering Online. Anyone here have or tried hte online one? You can buy all the cards online and get them deposited in your account and you can actually redeem them for physical cards if you want. The online game is really good, I got some nice decks on there.

I played for about 6 months back in '95, it's fun when you're a teenager and have nothing to do...but eventually RL took over

Yea someone stole all my early Shivan Dragons, I replaced them with 5th editions, right around the time I quit. Used to play a guy in high school who was the local champ, his decks were pretty much all dual land, he had some all around nice cards and knew how to build a deck. Still have them all , as well as my brothers cards. He was an ice age fiend

I played way back in the day.
Mostly alphas and betas, some revised, and one pack of 4th edition. Thats when I got tired. It really is just a game, a fun game to be sure, but only a game.
I cant play any one game for too long, not even Super Mario Brothers. Eventually I just dont care anymore.

I've played it on O - C - T - G - N...

I still buy a pack from time to time for collecting, but noone I know plays. Guess thats just another downside to getting older

I played Revised Edition to Ice Age. Won several tournaments in the day too. I quit when I saw the ridiculously powerful new cards that kept coming out in the new sets and couldn't keep spending for them. Back in my day expansions always stunk.

I still have the complete set of Revised, Fallen Empires and Homelands.
