I agree with you though, a lot of the new abilities were already there, but did not have names..ie..Ball Lightning had "haste" or Serra Angel had "vigilance".
They are easy to figure out for me, but to explain to someone who has never played before, it is tough remembering all of them.

You can play MTG for free online with Apprentice. There's no type of lobby or matchmaking however, just direct IP to IP play so you need to know someone else who has it to play. It's a pretty basic interface, just provides you with all the cards and a play area. It's up to you to know and enforce the rules, doing upkeep, tapping/untapping, etc.
