I don't have one and have no desire to have one.

The thing that bugs me the most about it is when web searches bring up a FB page as the first hit, or when companies do the "like me on FB" for discounts etc.

I never use my FB page. I've never visited the twitter website.

Now THAT is impressive. I hate Twitter with a passion, but even I get occasionally get sucked in by some stupid celebrity tweet that gets reported on the news.

twitter is actually the only webpage on the entire internet that's blocked by my company's firewall.

I don't have one.

i'm pretty much agree with what was quoted by Malcolm Berko, whoever the fuck that is, but i still have a facebook account. I rarely use it, but I do use it to keep up on some friends that live far away or other things like bands, tv shows, or other sites.

I don't poke, tweet, or anything of that kind. I needed a Facebook account to be the admin of my companies Facebook page, I kept it at 0 friends and after months of family and friends trying to add me, thinking I just don't want to add them, etc I invited a few to show them there is nothing to see, then removed them.

Facebook is just a lot of drama, I can see the usefulness of sharing pictures of kids and such with family but it seems the last several years almost every family argument has involved, "Well he/she said on Facebook...".

To me, Facebook just screams "look at me, look at me" - when that's usually the last thing I want to do.

Facebook was better when it was just used for college networking. Ever since it went "public" I've been less interested. I see at least a dozen posts a day that make me think "WHY would you post that on FB?" Usually only use it for news for our Minecraft server or the intermittent contact.

Avoid twitter like the plague.

Friends got me to create a page a couple of years back. I think I posted 1 picture over the years, and at one time organized an event. But, I don't usually check it more than once or twice per year.

I do, but I don't post updates. Mainly just have it as a way for old school friends, people from my past to contact me if they wish, and to see what people are up to.

I don't have one, but I also feel like I'm missing out. Reason I don't have one is cuz I was irked by the number of kids hogging university resources just to browse facebook whenever I had legit work to do.

I have one and use it constantly. But then again I actually enjoy being social. ATOT largely being a bunch of introverted nerds it would draw a lot of hate here.

Suffice it to say it's become a primary means of social communication for friends/family. Even my extended family from the previous generation now uses it extensively. Aside from the GF, I facebook someone more often than I call them.

Checking in.
I had one starting in 2005, as the result of incessant pestering at college. It sat almost entirely idle, and I finally "deleted" it several months ago. Whether or not that will in fact make it go away, that's up to Facebook. Based on the articles on this subject, it's not likely that the information is truly gone.

I have a Facebook page but I rarely sign in. I have my Twitter account set up so the tweets go to my Facebook page. Although I don't use Twitter much either, maybe a couple of posts per week.

I guess there's a difference in "being social" vs. "actually going out and doing things with real people". 99% of facebook is posting pictures, splattering whatever you did for lunch on the wall, and general drama whoring. It's not much different than a forum really. Except there are real names.

That's not being social to me.

Actually going over to someone's house, meeting up for dinner, getting together to play cards, having a cookout, whatever...with real people. That's being social.

Not to say that facebook can't facilitate those activities, but that's not really what most people spend a majority of their time doing on it.

Instead of making a phone call or actually going and seeing them, it's being replaced with one liners on a website.

And I do that too. But say I find an interesting link I think one of my friends would like. I'll post it to his/her wall and that in turn can start a conversation about said link with anyone who can see the post. Difference from a forum is, as you say, that there are real people behind said conversation and I'm likely to know some of them.

Among my friends I can guarantee that when we meet up IRL at some point in the conversation someone will say "did you see X? I posted it on facebook." It's kind of an expected medium at this point. Like asking "hey, you get that letter I sent?".

Facebook to me is essentially online small talk that I can do whenever I like. There is some drama and some "I just put paper in my printer and bought a new ink cartridge at Staples." posts, but I can just ignore those and the rest is at least mildly interesting. In a way though, I actually like the boring posts to a degree. It's sort of a passive way of keeping up with people.

So no it doesn't replace IRL social activity by a long shot, but it's a form of connection like any other.

Yes - it's fake of course [the spelling of my name is slightly different] - only people I meet up to play sports with, get together for social events, etc are on my "friends list". I check it once or twice a day to see what's up and play words with friends [Scrabble] :)

The wife is "addicted" to facebook/instant messaging - she likes to read about the drama, play numerous games, etc. Women tend to be more chatty than men [at least from my observations] - so it makes sense that she'd use it quite often.

Facebook/twitter are just modern age tools for socializing...

I have a facebook account with 4 family members and 1 friend. No one can see each others post. Never update but uses it for IM. I read what others post sometimes but don't understand the attention.
