Amorphis is the shit. I like their newer stuff a lot.

I went to grab a song link from YouTube per my normal fashion and HOLY FUCK WHY HAVE I NOT SEARCHED FOR THEM ON YOUTUBE BEFORE?!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGYHTJevXkQ

If it seems to be a little mundane, skip to the three minute mark or so prepare your pants to be shat in.

I had listened to Amorphis' early work when that was released and didn't like it that much, and since then never again tried it as I had remembered I didn't like it much. But I guess their style changed a bit since, this sounds very nice indeed.

Eluveitie I like a lot, when I feel like listening to Folk metal I often play them, Ensiferum, Sabaton (although that's not Folk metal I still like mixing it with the other bands) and sometimes still some oldschool Skyclad.

And when I feel like fun I also mix it with some Alestorm and Korpiklaani, and once in a while some Knorkator just because those guys are mental.

Knorkator (as most here will not know them since they usually sing in German):

Smoke on the water cover:

'All that she wants' and 'Ma Baker' covers (check the originals first if you don't know those pop songs):

Thanks, I'll check them out a bit more I guess :)

This song reminds me vaguely of some of the work of Sentenced. Which I guess is a good thing seeing they were one of my favorite bands for many years.

I'm trying to check out some of these bands that I haven't heard of...so much Scandinavian metal. I'm always surprised when somebody's just like 'oh, have you listened to Kuusikymmentäviisi?'

And you look them up and your mind is blown.

(note: kuusikymmentäviisi is Finnish for sixty-five. It's not a band.)

edit: Oh, and Sky is Mine is another great song off Skyforger, for sure. Does anyone know what that crazy mic Tomi is using is?

Man I forgot how great Last Fair Deal Gone Down is. Alternate title: THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP.

When I had a car with fairly decadent stereo in it, including two decent-sized subs, I liked to crank this album up to drown out old rattling Caprices playing 'lil wayne' or what-the-hell-ever.

See, Isis is another one that I actually had not listened to, despite my familiary with the two it was grouped with.

I like it. Sounds a little like Opeth and a little like Katatonia...anyone mentioned Katatonia?

A+ music will kill self to again!

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but another Akerfeldt project that is worth listening to is Bloodbath. It's too bad he left the band last year.

The Fathomless Mastery is awesome.

That's because it's hard to call modern Katatonia metal. I'm a huge fan but I wouldn't classify them in the metal category. Also (no offense to phucheneh) but IMO that's not a great song to get people into Katatonia. I would have went with any of these:

The term "hauntingly beautiful" has become kind of a joke and cliche, but I can't think of a better term for these tracks.

I just didn't dig The Great Cold Distance that much. I like Last Fair Deal Gone Down and Viva Emptiness a lot more.

I'll also go ahead and be 'that guy' and say that I like later In Flames. I don't understand the hate for their later albums. A Sense of Purpose was still good, dammit.

Well, I would not go that far to say they are "heavy metal" but more like of "heavy music" for lack of a better word/description, IMO. I also like Limp Blizkit.

Death metal to me (80's and 90s bands) = Motor Head and that band that dressed up like monster (can't remember their name -Gores?) and no, not Kiss, LOL.

I like how In Flames is progressing for the most part too. Clayman is still probably my favorite album overall, but their latest one is 2nd. I didn't care for A Sense of Purpose as much, but it wasn't terrible. Their very early stuff sounded too much like Dark Tranquility (which is understandable) but as time went on they found their own unique sound that I personally enjoy.

Another album I don't really understand all the hate for is Heritage by Opeth. It's not the same heavy metal that they used to do, but it's still really great music.

I just can't get into it. I like the mix of styles on albums like Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries, and Watershed.

I like Damnation, but I gotta be in the mood for it. Never been much a fan of Deliverance (heresy, most would say). Heritage is like the softness of Damnation but without the same groove to it. I dunno, hard to put into words...just doesn't interest me much. I probably just need to give it a few more casual listens in the car and something and see if it grows on me.

Hell, I didn't like Porcupine Tree's Fear of a Blank Planet or The Incident on first listen, either, and I now find those albums to be fucking amazing. I must throw in another rec for them since no one else has acknowledged my other. I know it's not the melodic death metal and whatnot that is otherwise being discussed; but fuck they're good. It's music for music lovers.

The last time I saw them, they toured with friggin' Coheed and Cambria. Got no love; I heard all these kids asking who they were and saying their named sounded queer and shit (...that kinda shit from a Coheed fan? ugh). They promptly shut the fuck up when PT came on and starting playing those crushing riffs.

I couldn't get into it either, for a long time. I don't know what it was, but it took me like 20 listens to really start liking Heritage.

It took me a ton of listens to "get" Blackwater Park, too, when I first discovered Opeth. I don't know... Opeth is complex, you can't just listen to an album a few times and understand what the obsession is about.

Since you mentioned Porcupine Tree, I feel like I should plug Riverside's new album, which has a few song that are heavier than their previous work. The whole album has a 70's prog/blues feel. It's an excellent listen (and free on Spotify.)

I thought Blackwater Park was great the first time I heard it. I like Heritage but it's one of my least favorite Opeth albums (along with Damnation). I prefer the progressive death metal version of Opeth.
