i saw them preform with Slayer and Hatebreed on halloween when i was in college

was insane

They're one of the few bands that are better live than they are on CD. Simply amazing.

Same with Sonata Arctica too. Saw them in N.H. a few years ago and it was a blast. Such a happy metal crowd. Real fun live band.

One thing i used to hate about death metal...at least back when i was more into it, was how short the songs were. I had a Napalm Death cassette that was like maybe 20 minutes long total and i paid full regular price for it.
one of the songs was 10 seconds long "duh,duh,duh..everybody diiiieee!!!!!" and that was the whole song. lol
Deicide and Death was another of recollection that had some albums too short.

However i would like to remind everyone that Carcass ruled and still rules. *sniff* [/thread.]

by reading this post you agree to the bold given above. You may NOT post disagreement.

Also, System, not sure if you know, but after Carcass called it a day, their guitarist Michael Amott went on to form Arch Enemy with his brother, Christopher. And a better guitar duo, the world hasn't seen.

Glad to hear some Iced Earth recommendations. Definitely my favorite band of all time.

There are a lot of different genres of metal (let alone rock). You can listen to something more metalcore / hard rockish like Avenged Sevenfold, move on to more of an alternative sound with Sevendust, check out some power metal with Edguy, and then on to some thrash (with power metal elements) with Iced Earth, mix it up with some industrial metal with the likes of Rammstein and finally finish it all up with some the symphonic metal sounds of Nightwish or Within Temptation (read the top comments on that video, FTW!).

I'm not a fan of death metal (deep growling, think Cannibal Corpse) or black metal (high-pitched screaming, think Cradle of Filth), but there are a few songs in each that I don't mind. Angels Don't Kill by Children of Bodom, for example.

i shall amend and allow that clause to be issued in the agreement to which we all agreed to.

I like bands like All That Remains and As I lay Dying (more on the heavy, not death side)

I used to listen to a lot of different metal growing up though, I really used to like King Diamond.

Dimmu Borgir, Hammerfall, Lamb of God, Otep, (more mainstream Mudvayne), SOAD (they arguably broke up, and Serj released his own couple of odd albums), (old and new Sepultura), Soulfly, SkeletonWitch, there is a ton of good new "heavy metal" out there.

My favorite album is The Glorious Burden. I'm probably one of the few that preferred Owens over Barlow. Now, we'll have to see how Stu Block changes the game...

I'd disagree with that statement. I hate bands that spew profanities every other verse. It just shows a lack of creativity, in my eyes. Listen to Opeth; it's like poetry.

I'd recommend Katatonia in that department. I've never heard a darker sound. The fact that you never hear a death growl only adds to their sinister sound, imo.

Because I haven't seen a recommendation yet, Protest the Hero is a very talented metalcore band, with a sortof throwback 80's sound.

Yea, Katatonia is great, Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth performed in several Katatonia albums back in the day....

Well, I would not go that far to say they are "heavy metal" but more like of "heavy music" for lack of a better word/description, IMO. I also like Limp Blizkit.

Death metal to me (80's and 90s bands) = Motor Head and that band that dressed up like monster (can't remember their name -Gores?) and no, not Kiss, LOL.

Gwar?
