does anyone have 16gb or more of RAM? if so, why?

i ran out of memory running 5 vm's and a bunch of other host processes on a machine with 8gb.
win7 actually shut down an app.

i guess it's time to go 16gb?

I use 16gb, it was more due to the really good deal I got 8 gigs for so I figured I might as well. I used to run some VMs and other stuff but for now it's largely unused. The price however was simply right when I built.

I have 16GB of RAM and will upgrade to 32GB as soon as the 8GB sticks become widely available and reasonably priced.

I'm a software developer and work with large data sets for modelling applications. My experience is that as soon as customers can purchase systems that can model larger data sets (with more precision) then they do so........ I like to keep one step ahead and make sure that there are no unforeseen scalability issues etc. I've already had to work with data sets that use 16GB.

For gaming and general use...... probably would not need 16GB for some time.
(Although I'm sure that now 8GB is a lot more common you may see leading edge games start to target this or more next year)

In the 80's when 32bit processors became common, people were impressed with the 4GB address space and it was almost unthinkable at the time that you could actually populate the address space with physical RAM; let alone anything that would need it.........

We have had this 2GB barrier (32bit O/S limitations) and it is finally good to see that we have cleared this barrier (64bit) and can move forward again! Many new possibilities will open up as a result (its a chicken and egg problem)

16GB here, because I could. 8GB was prolly enough, but then again a single-patty burger is prolly enough too but I loves me some double-patty burger action!

240GB V3 was prolly overkill too, I never fully filled my 160GB G2 either.

I haz moar cuz I can haz moar.

Ya you guys need 16GB . Hmm 32GB I dont think any desktop motherboard supports 32GB ? I know xeon does.. My friend has a MAC with xeon 8core 32GB he put in. But that is a server CPU. Desktop I think right now most mobos are 16GB max ... hmmm

I know X58 supports 24GB and I think that socket 2011 motherboards have 8 dimms of memory.

i have 16GB on my system. i use a pretty big chunk of it as a hybrid buffer space for recording game footage at 1080p 60fps. works great for that purpose.

i also dedicated a small chunk of it as a write buffer for my RAID0 SSD array. the buffer can combine small random writes into a large sequential write, thereby extending my drives' life.

24gb on my main rig, 16gb on my "toy" rig, 16gb on my "server', 8gb on everything else aside from my file server which only supports 4gb.

I maxed em out, why? Because it's cheap and I don't have to worry about it now, lol.

There are several desktop boards that support 32. Above that, you need a server chipset

Lots of machines here at work with more than 16, but its for running multiple VM's. They are all using Intel's 5520 chipset on a dual socket board with Xeon e5620's.

Most new motherboards support 32GB. Looking at Neweggs 1155 mobos with 4 memory slots, 121 support 32GB, while 17 only support 16GB. So motherboards aren't the problem.

However Windows 7 Home Premium only supports 16GB.

So Windows is going to be the problem for most people.

My server does. FreeNAS 8 using ZFS Z-RAID.

16GB FTW

16Gb here. VMs. Hypothetically, video editing if/when my wife starts doing that (she's been threatening to, but so far...).

I custom built my rig for online poker. I have 16GB of RAM installed since I play 12 tables with a bunch of software. I also use Camtasia sometimes to record my play for videos. With 8GB when I had everything going, I would get lag on my PC. The lag is gone now.

Also, the price of RAM is so cheap now, why not????

I used to operate a rule of 2GB per Core but ever since 8GB Mushkin Redline/G.Skill Ripjaw kits came down to £35 earlier this year it's now 4GB per Core.

I do use VM's quite a bit & really can't see any reason to change my RAM rules. Maybe with DDR5 when that finally comes around the power requirements will be low enough to make RAMdisks with battery backups a viable option, previous attempts have had poor battery backup time & capacity.

2x Quad Core 16GB machines here & a 16 Core (4 CPU) 64GB Server too.

16 GB

Why? it was only $110 so why not. 4 GB was not cutting it and 8 or 12 would probably have been fine for my imac. I would get significant slowdowns just doing photo editing. I do have 2x 2560x1600 displays and 1 x 2560 x 1440 though.

16GB/2600k/6950 because I just gave the fiance 8GB/2500k/6870 and, well, she can't have a better computer than me.

Overkill for general usage though.

with larger memory sizes on graphics cards, does more system memory become more effective/useful- like w/ addressing, or remapping overlapped?
Does anyone know if win8 will be make more/less/better use of high system ram qty's, given the breadth and scale of devices the OS will be made to run on?

I have 16GB in the HTPC (well, had since some of it failed, I just can't prove it other than BSOD's for PFN and Memory... Passes every memory test I have thrown at it though).... With 8GB, I was having problems editing HD video recordings.

I've had only 6GB for a couple years now and have never found a need for more ... yet

but I only use the computer for games and nothing else... not even surfing the internet (it's off when I'm not gaming)
