I'd love to see Tesla actually produce a car that is 1. Affordable, and 2. Not subsidized by carbon credits.

So right now, comparing anything to a Tesla is just saying you don't understand how cars are made.

2017 35k version. And we are already talking 50k+ price so that is where the Tesla is, and I do not care about credits or anything I just care about what it costs me out the door.

And no I don't know or care how cars are made, I just know Tesla is awesome and all of the other car companies suck ass.

Tesla has yet to turn a profit. I cannot wait for this endless stupid hype train around this company to derail.

I've love to see this mythical $35K electric car when it's finally released (and isn't actually $35k).

I will however buy the argument that idiots who think HP is all that matters in a car allow the hellcats to attain some bizarre undeserved halo status and make the Viper not needed for Dodge's image.

It's not an image I'd want by any means, but hey, if that's what sells cars for them. Good on them I guess?

Do any car companies actually turn a profit? Seems like all of them are broke all the time? At least Tesla is trying to do something innovative, and produces a high quality product.

Meanwhile, Tesla is on track to sell 35,000 vehicles this year. How many Vipers did Dodge sell last year? Less than 800?

35K cars that cost them more to make than they bring in in profit as primary operations vs a company that can afford to lose money on a niche product subsidized by their extensive line up of econo boxes that are somewhat profitable.

Excellent comparison.

It wasn't really a comparison but more of an observation. Chrysler makes garbage. I'd never own one.

I like Tesla and wish them continued success. They threw the notion of what a car should be out the window and created something amazing. I love the innovation.

I'd love to see them turn a profit and expand their market.

You're uninformed on the "costs more to make" bit. They're still acting as a company in start up mode. They're doing heavy development work on future products, and a lot of that is where the losses are coming from. It's easy to look and say "herp, derp, losing money on each car sold", but that's not correct. They lose money, but they don't lose more money by selling more cars. They're just spending more than they make for each car sold on developing future products.

What kind of idiot would compare Viper sales to Tesla? We're talking about a car that is exclusively a toy, owned by people who invariably have other cars - if not several. Tesla on the other hand sells sedans and minivans. Very nice ones, don't get me wrong if I had $140k to spend on a daily driver a loaded X would be lovely.

But comparing niche high performance toys to that is just absurd.

On topic, if this ends up happening I may need to do the One of One before it disappears.

What's that?
Sounds like a derivative of a reach around where you ar the only person and you have to kind of wrap your other arm around where it fells like another person...
nevermind

Allow me to rephrase
Whats a One of One?
Isn't that just One
(sorry...in procrastination mode...need to go shake it off with a cup of coffee)

Basically, since they're never able to batch up a given configuration anyway due to super low volumes, it doesn't cost them much to allow far more customization of colors/options than you'd normally get.

No way was I touching google during procrastination mode.
That quickly become time travel into the future.

It's like potato chips. You can't click just one link...you got a click them ALL.
At least we aren't talking youtube.
Just last week I went from searching how to remove lower cowl on a CBR to spending about an hour watching jennamarbles videos.

Really?

There is just something about a Viper that is drop dead sexy. I'd sell a kidney and maybe half my liver for the new ACR. :p

JHumeC, WTF. Only on Anandtech will a thread like this devolve into arguing about Tesla...

I'm not really surprised by this. Supercars are a very niche market to begin with, and I just don't think there's much demand for American made ones. Not to say the Viper is a bad car, but most people with that kind of cash are focused on European cars. Fiat SpA already owns Ferrari and Maserati as their top marques.

It's also no secret that the Chrysler division is in big trouble. The CEO was just recently trying to pawn the company off to GM. Of course GM doesn't want it.

FCA just spun Ferrari off on its own.

That's not what is happening. The CEO of FCA wants to force a merger between FCA and GM. I believe Chrysler is doing ok, in fact about the best they've been doing since the mid 90s. The problem is FCA is trying to find ways to modernize as a company and so they're having some pains in doing that. In fact that is the driving force behind the push for merger with GM is that both companies could then share R&D costs and potentially platforms. So Chrysler could move from the aging old Mercedes platforms and the hodge podge of others to more modern ones, and GM would get more economies of scale (and pooling the R&D costs spreads it out).

GM doesn't want it because it is less beneficial for them short term, as they've already spent that money on development and are rolling out a bunch of new products on new platforms with new engines. Of course they'll need to be doing that constantly, hence why it actually could make sense for them long term.

Faster, more comfortable and a hell of a lot cheaper on gas. Oh ya, the Tesla will also drive itself. Basically better in every possible way.

faster... in one limited aspect it is faster...

cheaper on gas... really? for 100k bucks, who really cars.

comfortable? as a commuter car or hauling your bros around for coffee? I guess, but that's not really what a viper is all about.

tesla drives itself... awesome, good for it. I actually enjoy driving so not what I consider cool in the context of a fun car

not saying there aren't things about the tesla that aren't cool. but some of those same "cool" things makes it pretty uncool. You are comparing apples to oranges. in this case the apples go sssssssss and have a giant ipad for a dash and the oranges go VROOOM, does a burnout, has a giant spoiler and has 3 pedals. The 3 pedals in itself makes the viper cooler

Yeah, but what are you going to do with it? Drive it to Starbucks and pose with it every Saturday? No way you could live with a car like this on a daily basis... which is why you never see them on the road.

From the guy whose answer to every car question is a 10+ year old Lexus LX. :p

I'm kind of thinking of changing that in the not so distant future but I'm not getting the kind of car that someone who is 10 years old would hang a poster of on his wall. We will see what I end up with. I'll keep the Camry Hybrid for commuting duty for sure... as long as I have the 70 mile commute anyway.

I've come across some Viper's out on my early weekend rides.
They may spend a lot time posing during the day but during the wee hours they are doing some shenanigans that would land them in jail.
(there is a magical hour on Sunday mornings where every single LE officer is back at the precinct or at dunkin donuts around here. As a result...much hoonery occurs when 99.9999999 of the population is still asleep)

If I had a Viper I'd really hate to waste tire tread in traffic. I don't think the tires would last long with me at the wheel and we're talking 1500+ per set. Wife would not be happy.
