I personally prefer the BBC to any news broadcast coming from the US but that's mostly personal taste I guess.

I like the radio. I listen to BBC and NPR radio for my news, and much of my entertainment. My problem with the UK scheme is it puts a price on one of the widest forms of communication, at least in years past. TV is less relevant now than it used to be, but it's still relevant. That just seems wrong to me.

I'll agree with this. But that actual material on air seems less censored than what's back home, or at least on par anyway.

It's only part time, like 4 hours a week or something, he's at georgetown and does that on the side.
 
Perfect example of why I agree with licensing fee's. "Community" Is being shelved, by it's american network, it doesn't matter that it's a great show it's not getting enough viewers. If it were on the BBC the fact that it's a good show would be enough to keep it running.

What's the point of wasting money on something no one is watching and thus is not a "good show"?

Sounds like a decent waste of good tv money to me.

There's a difference between what has critical acclaim and artistic merit and what is popular. That's why Studio 60 was cancelled, while the Simpsons has been on far too long, it's why we've got American Pie 9 or whatever the hell it's on now, it's why in America shows get ploughed into the ground until you just can't stand to watch them anymore and in the UK shows have maybe a two or three series shelf life.

I'd much rather have lots of good shows than thousands of hours of the same show because it gets ratings.

Ratings != Quality.
Quantity < Quality

It's the reason the X-Factor is an ITV show.

Think of the BBC as a brake on the rush to find the lowest common denominator of mainstream TV.

It seems a bit of a grey area but as I understand it if you dont have a TV tuner or you dont watch TV shows as they are broadcast (i.e. BBC iPlayer live TV option) then you dont need one.

I wouldn't call the community a critical acclaim and if it was popular it wouldn't had been canceled.

I have no idea how comparing some crappy movie, american pie 9 and such, get shows canceled.

And your reasoning only applies to the shows you think are good and not what everyone else does so that's a good thing otherwise shows will be on that no one watches here and money gets wasted for it.

Good ratings generally means a good show judged by more people thus they are the good shows.

Also I had to look on google what "ITV" stood for so who cares about some crappy show on it? 😛

OK but explain to me how Studio 60 was cancelled, so was Firefly. Whereas The Simpsons is still on, Family Guy is no longer funny, etc etc etc.

It's because American shows take moron viewers into account, BBC doesn't.

We shouldn't be pandering to lowest common denominator humour because loads of morons watch it.

First off I had to look up studio 60 also and it sounds fairly boring so don't care about that.

As for the "lowest common denominator humour" last I checked but that was what community was about when I watched the first two episodes but then stopped so why would that count to keep when others are in your opinion worse?

As for the other two they get the ratings and thus make enough to keep running so they deserve to keep running if they make the money to pay for it otherwise it would be removed and that's a lot fairer then say a show that no one watches but everyone has to pay for and wastes everyone's money.

Just because you think the people watching are morons more then likely shows who the real moron is because you think wasting money on a show that brings in no money is something fine to pay for.

It's a wonder morons like that puts up with paying a tax for shows that can't survive anywhere without people paying for it but never watch it.

Just answering this bit as a lot of Americans seem to think the only TV we get here is the BBC.

The BBC is funded by the licence fee and is considered non commercial, it isnt allowed to have advertising. There are quite a few BBC TV and radio channels.

There are a bunch of commercial channels as well (way more than the BBC) that are funded by advertising. ITV is one of these.

Both the above are free over the air options. Theres no fees or decoder boxes involved.

There are also the subscriber channels like Sky or Virgin which are like your cable channels.

Because I and most of other people didn't like a show you think should had ran longer?

Guess what... that's the way of life, you don't get everything you want.

If you want it you are free to pay for it to keep it running otherwise get over it.

No one said it was but making people pay for it when they don't use it for crappy shows it seems hal likes is what we are talking about.

Just because a small minority likes a certain show is not a reason to keep it running with everyone else's money.

And thus look at the previous statement and why everyone is making fun of the tv licensing. 😛

It would be like having to pay for pbs and having a tax for it when no one watches 90&#37; of the stuff they show.
