And thus look at the previous statement and why everyone is making fun of the tv licensing. :p

It would be like having to pay for pbs and having a tax for it when no one watches 90% of the stuff they show.

Without TV licensing we wouldn't have Top Gear, Doctor Who, The Office, Faulty Towers, Monty Python, Blackadder etc etc etc.

The BBC are paid to make what's good not what's popular. Good != Popular.

Not true for if they were that popular then they would had made it on normal television based on ratings.

Good is a viewpoint you have about something and many people would not agree with you so more then likely it's not good. :p

Also other then the office American version I really don't care about any of those but feel free to pick on that because you evidently think anything shown on bbc means it's what everyone likes.

I have no idea what PBS is.

I quite like having a branch of the media free from the effects of the advertisers.

Its great if you have kids to not have them bombarded with adverts for the latest crappy toys or cheap epilepsy inducing animated shows.

Fact is few people in the UK would get rid of the BBC and we are the ones who pay for it. That should tell you that there is some worth in it even if you dont see it.

Just like I had no idea what itv was so who cares on either side? :p

As for shows with no ad's you can get those but pay extra like hbo and such but they stay alive because they are good so they keep alive if they stay that way and it is a good thing.

Paying for something only a few want sounds like a commie idea if ever there was one. ;)

In talking to the wrong person about this stuff. What I'm saying is fact not opinion, those shows would not have been made without the BBC they are all risks no safe bets, you don't get risks of you have to make what's popular.

You have no proof of that and thus is your opinion.

You have no evidence if they would had been made or if keeping them is a smart thing.

Also I found saw this about the tv licensing:

In many jurisdictions, television licences are enforced. The BBC states 'television detector vans' are employed by TV Licensing in the UK.

Besides claims of (usually undisclosed) sophisticated technological methods for the detection of operating televisions, detection of illegal television sets can be as simple as the observation of the lights and sounds of an illegally used television in a user's home at night.
Sounds like a fun place where vans are looking to see if you have a tv or people looking in your windows to see if one is on. :p

Safe bets with tv are easy, crap reality shows friendsesque comedies its easy. Making something good takes risk, watch a documentary on how any of the program's i listed got made, they were all risks that only the bbc could take

Putting up with that tax and living in the police state must be fun.

Lol no argument? Classic American. I love how we post responses to your claims and then suddenly we are in a police state. Id much rather live in a country where laws are upheld.

Laws are upheld but making fun of this license is what most are talking about and the spying crap is part of it.

Keep on dodging the topic and trolling as that's what you are good at just like you started saying the laws are not upheld here but are fine with getting spied on.

When you say most you mean you?

We've explained the fee and why we are happy to pay it, so if there is any trolling you might want to look a little closer to home there.

With air broadcasts of tv how is the license enforced? Seems to me if air broadcasts of TV exist in the UK, there is very little incentive to pay it as it is not enforceable. Unless I'm missing something.

It's a hal thread...what did you expect. :p

So you are saying it's fine when they harass you even if you don't have a tv as another said?

They dont harass you. o_O

I haven't seen a TV detector van in 20 years.

Edit: Actually I'm not sure I've ever seen one in real life.

If you haven't got a licence I think they send you a letter. If you haven't got a TV you tick a box and send it back.
