You use Rotella in the Forester? Want the high zinc for the flat 4?

It's very popular in Subaru motors - apparently Mobil1 (specifically 5w30) breaks down too quickly, but Rotella is supposed to do quite well. I may send a sample out to Blackstone at 3k and see what it looks like.

I use 10W-40 in my Jeep Cherokee 4.0L pushrod even though the manual says 10W-30.

Why? Because the 10W-30 recommendation is for gas mileage. In other countries they recommend 15W-40 for the same engine because it protects better.

Chevron Supreme BTW

For the most part the Jeep 4.0L would run ok if you lubricated it with whale blubber. It isn't a picky engine. Though it is a flat tappet engine so the zinc content does matter some.

Yep. If it's really cold, I let it warm up a little before driving.

I was always under the impression that it was thicker and thus won't provide as good of lubrication upon startup. Then again I don't understand oil designations and what engines can accept all that well.

It's 5W at startup, right? Same as 5W-20.

Why do computer geeks think that putting the wrong weight oil in your car is going to make it blow up and cost you a meeelion dollars to fix? Well, don't worry, your tires will fall off from putting the wrong torque on the nuts before that happens. :D

i have a 97 m3. I buy whatever I can find thats close to 0w40 for winter or 15w50 for summer in full synthetic. I changed my oil tuesday and used 6 quarts of castrol syntec 5w40 and 1 quart of 5w50 because they didn't have enough 5w40.

Interesting, if you do send for a UOA let me know the results. I'm currently running Pennzoil yellow bottle 5W-30 in my mom's NA Forester, haven't had any issues but if the Rotella is a better match for the engine then I'll use that instead.

Different beast entirely - I'm running the turbo motor with a bigger turbo, intercooler, exhaust and tune. ;)

Mazda said the same thing about ms3/ms6/cx7 smoking turbos - switch to 5w40 to prevent/stop smoke. stupid shitty k04 turbo seals

Oh very true, but aside from the turbo the base setup (AFAIK) is identical. We don't have any issues with the PYB, but the engine does have a bit of piston slap (2003 with 144k on it.) If the Rotella is "better" for the engine then I'll use that instead. :)

Car calls for Mobil One 0W-40 European Formula. $6 - $8/qt and the dealer charge $10.

Usually change the oil every 6 months or so when the indicator tells me too.

If your car calls for regular old DINO - you usually can't go wrong with 5W-30.

Yea when I used to have my 69 Bug I put Rotella in it. The high Zinc content was better for it.

Johnson and Johnson baby oil works great and is cheaper than rip off "motor" oil. And it makes your car smell good too.

Will it protect your Toyota Corolla engine while towing 5000lbs and taking a turn at 40mph in snow???

I use a heavily-diluted essence of Charlie Sheen. My engine already has seen a doubling in brake horsepower and gasoline has started to pour out of my tank. Also, the UOA was diamonds, Blackstone Labs thanked me for the donation.
