There is very little difference now between most 5w20 and 5w30. Oils are not exactly 30 weight or 20 weight. They are just graded by what they come closest to on the scale. Most 30 weight is thin and most 20 weight is thick. So the true difference is much smaller.

For most cars 5w30/20 year round will work fine.

Oh very true, but aside from the turbo the base setup (AFAIK) is identical. We don't have any issues with the PYB, but the engine does have a bit of piston slap (2003 with 144k on it.) If the Rotella is "better" for the engine then I'll use that instead. :)

The Subarus that like 5w40 are typically turbocharged. This is because the turbos tend to break the oil down faster (Mobil1 5w30 breaks down to 5w20 pretty quickly after an oil change). If you're driving an NA engine I don't think there's a need to be worried about using a thicker oil, but you can always do a UOA and find out

manual calls for 15w40 for my dodge ram, i live in a desert so it rarely gets under 30 deg f. i could put 10w40 or 20w-50 if i want, and sometimes ill do just that. in my old bike i used to dump whatever i had available, hehe. i did always search for non-detergent for it tho.

AFAIK, heavier weight oil gives more protection if you drive higher RPM range.
Exactly, I use a blend of ~5 quarts 15W50 and one quart of 10W30 since my camaro sees regular abuse.
Just follow the owners manual but if people followed what their owner's manual said, we'd have 99% less threads in here. That's no fun.
That's fine for an everyday regular car but some of us have modded our cars so "stock" oil won't cut it.

It's 5W at startup, right? Same as 5W-20.

Good point, so thus the only big difference is that it would take heat situations better than 30 correct? Thus in the summer time it would maintain composition better.
