I would be terrible if a resturant didn't divide the tips up with the chef and cleanup people.

You tip a waiter and waitress for waiting on you and cleaning up afterwards...

wtf would you tip for take out?

No I tip with the hope it goes to the chef, the bus boy, and the waitress. They all worked for the meal so they all deserved a tip. Which is why I still tip for takeout since people are still making a meal for me.

chefs and cooks don't make tips. waitstaff and busboys do; neither of which do anything for takeout orders.

I am sure most resturants I go to divide up the tip between everyone. I see no reason not too.

chefs and cooks don't make anything from the tip pool.

only waitstaff and busboys do. waitstaff also tip the bartenders if they ordered drinks for customers during dinner.

I have to say, you're one of the worst posters to join here in a long time. That you've made such a negative impression after only 231 posts is pretty amazing.

Why should the waitress get a tip and not the chef, even when you dine in.

ok, the entire summer i worked at a restaurant, no one ever tipped the cooks because no one ever tips them. they make a regular wage/salary and do not depend on tips.

Then you are ignorant. Talk to some waiters/waitresses next time you go to a resturant, and find out how the tipping works. I can tell you it is NOT going to the cook staff. Also how often do you think that cashier is going to be like "oh he tipped, we should split this between the cook, myself, and everybody else evenly"?

LOL in the State of California all people must make atleast $8 an hour, and I know for a fact that most of the decent resturants here pay their waitstaff over $10 an hour. This is before any tip.

He was wrong about the tips going to the cooking crew but seriously guys, who cares? Also, some of you need to read the whole thread because this was posted in response a few posts up.

exactly. the cashier never gets tips and would have to be ridiculously altruistic to donate unexpected tip money to the rest of the waitstaff who did nothing for this particular transaction.

however, if it makes the OP happy to tip then so be it.

we don't have a problem with his ignorance. we do have a problem when that ignorance makes him call people names.

... and since there's no wait service, no tip. How could this POSSIBLY even be a question? Do you like throwing your money away?

why would you tip for picking up your food? wtf?

Really... If we go in and set down, and are waited on, and the the service is good I tip.

usually around 10-15 percent.
