Xbox 360 disadvantages: RROD, paid online, overpriced accessories, unreliable DVD drives, missing wireless (until the slim version), almost no exclusives

PS3 disadvantages: Controller isn't as good? Oh and PSN going down, that was bad.

If you are going to give the XBOX a negative for unreliable DVD drives, you need to give the PS3 a negative for unreliable BR drives. My BR drive on my PS3 has failed twice, and I can't say I've ever had a DVD drive fail on one of my two XBoxes.

Yes, because your experience and only yours is what matters when looking at statistics regarding reliability. The DVD drive in the 360 is less reliable.

I wasn't aware of that issue, but it wouldn't surprise me. I've heard of the YLOD too but that's a lot less common than the RROD.

Because it's fairly unanimous that the 360 has been the much more unreliable of the two.

I have had my PS3 about 2.5 years longer than my 360. I prefer the PS3 for the streaming capabilities it has with very little work required from me other than starting PS3 Media Server.

However, my 360 has taken over in terms of gaming. For example, the only PS3 games I have bought since I got a 360 are Gran Turismo 5, which I have logged no more than 2 hours on, and Uncharted 3. Uncharted 3 is collecting dust right now because I don't have enough time to dedicate to it and when I do have time, it's easier for me to fire up MW3 on the 360 if I want to play for 30-45 minutes.

well let's face it PS3 is better than the xbox platform; but at the same time don't forget that the PS3 came a year or so after xbox and that's why its hardware is better

Both are excellent, but in pure hardware terms, the PS3 is superior.

In terms of overall enjoyment and playtime, my 360 kills my PS3. I'm so accustomed to the Xbox now that playing on the PS3 seems entirely alien to me.

I say the PS3 is a supercomputer and USES brute strength to do what it does while the Xbox 360 uses finesse to do what is does.

I know onething. The PS3 sounds better than the Xbox.

Which is better Xbox LIVE or PSN? Why?

I'm not sure why I'm even bothering, but FWIW, I have a Xbox 360 Slim (250Gb) and a PS3 160 Gb, that both sit equidistant from me...roughly 8-10 feet away.

They sound the same: As in, when the TV is muted, they are both *barely* audible. When the TV isn't muted, neither can be heard. At all.

The old white 360s were very, very loud, one of the loudest consoles since the Dreamcast, but certainly no longer

Neither "sounds" any better than the other anymore.

My XBox slim sits literally on top of my PC. Both are about 1m away from my seat. The PC is whisper quiet at idle, puts out a decent amount of sound in a game (8800GTS makes most of that noise, muffled by an Antec P182 case.). The XBox runs considerably louder than the PC. It's not terrible, but once my attention is no longer in a game, I switch the console off immediately. I would not use it as a media extender box.

I don't know why people say the PS3's hardware is better when we haven't seen it get utilized. The graphics are identical between the two, and the main difference (blu-ray) is IMO annoying because it's so damned slow we HAVE to install games to the hard drive before they'll even run.

They are all craptacular in their own way, all 3 of them need to do much better next generation to get my money because the downhill trend of the gaming industry is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I've stopped playing and buying shooters altogether for a multitude of reasons, newer RPG's are heading that direction too, strategy games are non-existant and seemingly not totally possible on consoles, and the consoles are more trouble to run and keep running than a PC these days.

My next step is dropping out of console gaming altogether and playing the exclusives that really are the best in the world. I mean would you really rather play Unfarted, Fears of Bore, or Starcraft 2 or Diablo3?

It's not even close in my book and just kind of proves to me that consoles are geared more towards kids, although I hear many more adults online spewing bigotted garbage and disgusting sexual references to the point my kids cannot even get online and just shoot at some pixels; because the idiots that make these games don't allow you to mute the other players permanently"protecting us" with the guise of the Parental Advisory whilst completely removing a previous staple in the form of local multiplayer/splitscreen in search of the almighty dollar in it's more purified, solitary form.

I'm on my fourth Xbox. Still on my first Playstation. They both have their ups and downs. The sound the HDD makes on the PS3 is pretty annoying when it writes. I also feel that there are more loading times on the PS3 than on the 360. In terms of graphics it's pretty much the same thing, so I can't really comment. They are both stronger than the other in certain specific areas.

And to the people talking about failing DVD drives, I had a Xbox with one that failed.

The 360 has slightly faster GPU but in the real world it's mostly a wash. PS3 exclusives look better than Xbox 360 exclusives.

The biggest 3 problems for me regarding 360:

1) $50 a year for online gaming / Netflix streaming (over 7 years that's $350 I can spend on PC games!)
2) All cross-platform games I can think of and shooters are better on the PC; so what's the point of the 360 for a PC gamer?
3) Xbox360 has too few exclusives (Gears of War and Forza come to mind).

For these reasons, I find Xbox360 to be overpriced and generally redundant for PC gamers. The fact that it had horrible reliability over its life also tarnishes its reputation. Although I do prefer the 360 controller over the PS3 one. PS3 can play BluRays, a nice bonus.

Imho, the main reason Xbox360 was successful was because of the US market. PS3's high price ensured that its adoption would be slow. 1 year head start of the 360 also helped. By the time PS3 was just hitting its stride, millions of kids/people in US already had Xbox 360. If 5-6 of your friends in high school have an Xbox, what are you going to get to play COD against them? Xbox.

If PS3 launched at $399, I feel this generation would have been a blow out for Sony. Of course that's not how it turned out. I am confident Sony will address the 2 key issues of PS3 launch:

1) A more aggressive price point
2) Not allow MS to have a 1 year head start.

The PS3. I consider it a SUPERCOMPUTER. It Wins.

I will put it another way though. The PS3 does what it does via sheer brute force. While the 360 does what it does via finesse and efficiency

So are you basing this on the looks of their respective housings or are you an actual hardware engineer?

PS3 needs 2 teraflops to produce similar graphics to the 1 teraflop 360. If meaningless flops is the only info you had its a reasonable conclusion.

I was a first glance looking at their casings but then I observed a racing game I don't remember which one but the graphics appear impressive at fast speed. For the record I own a 360 not a PS3. Price was not a consideration. Some MAY admit that the PS3 higher price MAY indicate that it better. I still prefer the Sony. I am not a hardware engineer person.
