I also highly doubt if he was let out that he'd be come a gang banger at the age of 51. While I have no doubt that he has killed people in the past, either he is an amazing liar, or he has changed. FREE TOOKIE!

Those were jail escapes, not prison escapes. County and city jails are much less secured tha prisons.

Additionally, he did the crimes. Forgiveness does not mean that people get off without punishment. I am all for forgiveness, but penalties/punishments still need to be fulfilled. In this case, his crimes of muder and rape... his penalty cost him his life. He has had 20+ years longer on this planet than his victims did, but the bottom line is... he was dealt a penalty/punisment and it needs to be followed thru.

And it is no ones fault but his own.

Again, why would anybody reform if there's no second chances for them? All you want is another black man to die. I wonder if you all felt this way when Karla Fay Tucker was about to be executed.

It doesn't have anything to do with whether they'll reoffend or not. It's about following through with your threats. The law says "you do this, you're going to die" which sends a pretty big message about how severe the crime is to society. If the law DOESN'T execute him, it won't matter anymore. People will be less afraid of getting caught. If Tookie can get off, then some no-name person sure as hell won't get the death penalty.

That's BS, because how severe the punishment is doesn't deter people from doing the crime. They don't think they're going to get caught, otherwise they wouldn't have done the crime in the first place.

I dont care if he is green with red polka dots. Color has nothing to do with it. KFT was an axe murderer. She was found guilty, sentenced to death and it was carried out. She begged for clemency and did not get it. She brought it on herself, just as STW has. Sex, color... nothing to do with it.

As for reforming... well, reforming is a decision for the guilty party to take. Just as the action that got them on death row was a choice they had to make and made.

I'm sure it's easy for you to judge how one should live their life when you haven't been in their shoes.

That's the problem with the US 'justice' system, and why there's such a high rate of reoffending. It's all about 'justice and revenge', and little about actual rehabilitation. Of course since they committed the crime, they shouldn't be given treatment to make them a better person... they don't deserve that. They need to be punished for what they did. And even the few that take it upon themselves to become better persons in a system that doesn't assist them in it, they don't receive recognition for it.

Are you saying punishment does not deter crime?

So what would have to happen to make it OK to murder people with a shotgun?

Any civilized society has to have SOME things that are simply not acceptable, and a punishment to go with them.

Why is everything so black and white with you guys? Are you not able to see that just because he doesn't get the death penalty, doesn't mean he's absolve from all his crimes or anything. It just means he gets to continue on living and doing what good he can from where he's at.

Yep, because we know that punishment has done such wonder for the US correctional system.

I don't understand this. I'm all for ridding our legal system of stupid crimes, but when you go out and take the most precious thing you can from some one, that act needs to be punished. Severly. you take all power out of the legal system if you say, "Well, okay. It looks like you're sorry for killing those 3 people. We'll let you out into the world." Thats BS man.

I used to be in favor of the death penalty, but I cant say I am anymore.

I've quite simply heard too many occasions where an innocent man gets executed, and that is in my book completely and utterly unacceptable. If it means that we can never execute anyone, so be it. It is bad enough being wrongly imprisoned, but wrongful execution should NEVER happen!

On top of that, I dont think its any sort of deterrent whatsoever. Life in prison is more of a deterrant to me than death. Besides, as someone already said, if youre going to murder a few people, you dont weigh your options and think to yourself.

"Well, life in prison I can deal with, but 20 years of death row before execution is absolutely not going to work for me."

If people must have the death penalty, I would certainly be in favor of a cavaet that someone who shows genuine rehabilitation look Tookie appears to have, they should be commuted to life, in the same sense that good behavior can get you out early on parole.

Many people deserve to die, but we can never be 100% sure of who those people are.

I myself know Ive done plenty of stupid things 10 years ago that I would never even think of doing today.

It wouldn't particularly hurt my feelings if his sentence was commuted. Then again it wouldn't particularly hurt my feelings if he is executed. I don't really care either way. I completely supported the execution of KFT, this is no different.

I'm still waiting to hear what his shoes went through to make blowing someone's head off an OK thing to do.

That's because criminals are getting off easier and easier as days go by. Read the article I posted. The last time a California governor stayed an execution was in the late 60's. The criminal fire bombed some place killing his girlfriend's baby. He got the DEATH PENALTY for that. What do baby killers get now? It ain't the death penalty, that's for goddamn sure. It SHOULD be though. Every state should have the death penalty and they should use it more often. People would be much less willing to commit the crime if they know they'll be hung, fried, OD'd, and gassed if they're caught.

You're not black? I'm shocked. It's usually blacks who bring race into it when race has nothing to do with it. I don't believe you, though.
