A physical paper? No. Thought about a subscription not too long ago but print just doesn't make sense. I read tons of news from real news organizations on the internet though.

I get the local paper here at the office so I'll read that. My parents still get the paper at their place, so when I'm there, I'll read their news. Other than that, no not really.

To me, the advantage of an actual paper and ink newspaper is largely that there's nothing to motivate you other than your own inclinations. Sure, there are ads, there's soft porn that tries to grab your attention, there's stupid headlines (one of my pet peeves is the predilection of journalists to deal in cliches particularly in article titles and headlines). However, there are no popups, no cookies, no adware/malware, no offers to subscribe that assault you from the newspaper or whatever goddamn entity they have struck up some behind the scenes deal. I feel a lot more in control than when I'm trying to ascertain news online, which to me always seems to be full of gotchas and annoyances. Online, you are distracted a dozen ways and each of them offers another dozen, ad infinitum!

Now, I know that my local newspaper is not going to be the best source for unbiased info, it so often only hints at the real depth of information concerning the subject matter. I read between the lines. I get the feeling in reading the paper that it's a huge world and I'm only getting a snapshot by reading the paper, and I think that's a good thing. I certainly don't think for a second that I'm up to speed on current events by virtue of my experiences reading my daily newspaper.

Necro? Well, several reasons I'm posting in this now.

1. The link I have for it doesn't work anymore, so this will provide me with a working link to the thread (took me 15+ minutes to find this).

2. The San Francisco Chronicle just billed me for more than twice what I paid last year for my daily paper, WTF. They tend to over bill and I call and they give me a better deal, but I'm wondering if I should renew, frankly.

So, I'm revisiting this thread, where twice as many people said they don't read an actual newspaper than said they didn't.

I need ideas. The print quality of the SF Chronicle currently is quite excellent, it was terrible for the Oakland Tribune when I quit them for the Chronicle. I'd miss the daily paper, but maybe not so much if I'm resourceful.

Edit: Ah, I just looked at the poll and the current stats are:

Edit

I read a local newspaper
Votes: 19 27.5%
I read a national newspaper
Votes: 5 7.2%

I read a local and a national newspaper
Votes: 4 5.8%

I do not read a newspaper
Votes: 41 59.4%

I read the color comics sometimes on the weekend.
I read just one of those from the Sunday paper. It's the first one, Doonesbury. Gary Trudeau is a genius and really tries to make a difference. Witty guy. His daily version I don't bother with, though, it's a different animal.
