it was pretty much the only place to shop in college. local stores were overpriced to prey on sucker freshmen without cars on campus and they closed early, so around 8-9 pm at night on a weekday when your homework was done and you were finally ready to go do your shopping, the only store open other than bars and restaurants was wally world.
don't really shop there on a regular basis anymore, but I did buy a bunch of stuff for my new apartment at Walmart right after I had moved into it last summer (just little things like hangers, utensils, laundry hamper, and a couple lamps after I discovered on my first night in here that there was no actual light in the living room)
