Yes, they rock. Saw them live 8 months ago, right after Mezmerize was released and right before Hypnotized came out. Should have been a double album, and for that I think they were greedy (and by they I mean the label.) But they are awesome live, make sure you guys see them when you get the chance

I have Toxicity, Mezmerize, and Hypnotize. While I won't say their newest "double" album surpasses Toxicity, it is very good and I listen to it a lot. As always, it beautifully mixes harder rock with softer Armenian influences.

love them, going to see them at ozzfest next month.

Toxicity was by far the best, and their origional album as well.
Mesmerize and Hypnotize are pretty good as well, alot more political though, like Soldier Side, BYOB, and Hypnotize, but overall good sound.

I think SOAD are horrible. So horrible, in fact, that I have always been amazed that they not only have a record contract, but that they sell records. Their music has never demonstrated, IMO, any particular ability to write music (particularly melody), or perform it. I understand there is a language gap, but since they are selling records in English-speaking countries I think it's fair to point out that their lyrics are completely incomprehensible nonsense - they're like a less coherent version of something an angst-ridden 8th-grader would write on his notebook.

As a general matter I like bands with a different sound and feel, and I give SOAD credit for at least being authentic, and playing with what feels like real emotion. That said, I think they are one of the worst new bands to emerge in the past ten years or so.

I have to agree. Maybe it's just a generation gap, but their music sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me.

Their newest stuff sucks... I hate "lonely day" and the other new one that will be coming out on the radio pretty soon.

Some of their older stuff was at least interesting (Toxicity / Aerials)

I really like their first album, everything since then has just been a let down personally. There were a few keepers from their last set..

Classic case of one of those bands that starts out so amazing and just can never outdo their debut record.

i'd have to disagree completely. their debut lacked focused or powerful songwriting. they were just resting on their innovative sound to carry them. since then, their work has steadily improved as they have incorporated better songwriting and more stylistic deviations. "steal this album" wasn't amazing, but it was all B-sides, so what would anyone expect?

when i listen to the debut, i think "yeah, this sounds like system of a down, and it's a cool sound, but these songs just suck."

there's no language gap. they all are American and live in the Los Angeles area. But LA has an Armenia-Town like SF has China-Town, and they identify strongly with the violence that has taken place in the place of their heritage.

the new discs have a lot of really cool use of melody and harmony, though it didn't show up so much in the singles. and i'd consider myself to be a real melody-freak, considering it to be the most important thing in a song.

SOAD certainly aren't the best band in the world, nor are they as good as some people would like to think, but they are one of the few mainstream bands pushing the envelope and at least TRYING to make smart, creative, innovative art. as a songwriter and musician myself, i have a lot of respect for their creativity. i pay attention to things like chord structures, melodies, etc, and i can assure you that they rarely tread over waters that either they or previous bands have tread. when you consider that 95% of radio-rock uses EXACTLY the same chord pattern (all of which descends directly from Smashing Pumpkin's "Today"), SOAD gets huge points for actually writing new music.

Heard a few of their songs of the Toxicity album and enjoyed them
Bought the cd and listened to it in my car, which has a mariginally decent audio setup, and was extremely disappointed in the quality of the recording

It's sat on the shelf since then

Really? That makes their lyrics even more inexcusably stupid. I don't recall ever hearing a song with dumber lyrics than "Chop Suey." I remember the first time I heard that song, I figured it had to be some kind of joke (partly because of the title, but more because of the uber-pointless, angry-young-man lyrics and cartoonishly melodramatic mix of goofy thrash and even-goofier slow sections).

As I said before, I can appreciate that SOAD are trying to do something different, but I literally can't think of a worse modern band.

Saw them on SNL. Thought they sucked the suck out of suck. Haven't paid attention to them since.

If there's one small thing I've learned about music, it's to never, never judge a band by their performance on SNL.. unless that band is Ashleee Simpson.
