If you define rap as Nelly, 50 cent, Ja Rule, etc., then no, and I can understand why others don't like it. If you define it as 2pac, Notorious BIG, Dre, Snoop, Nas, and most of the underground scene, then yes

Agreed... but 50 cent is really good. Add scarface and UGK in there too.

No. Why do the least talented of all musicians tend to be the most popular?

People don't like to think. If something is intellectually stimulating, where you actually have to think a little and concentrate a bit to get something out of it, they won't like it. They want instant gratification. Rap and Rock are both so popular because the beat is slapped across your face, that pulse never changes, and it's very simple and very easy to digest.

Its also very possible that people just like the way rap and rock sound, as opposed to more "intellectually stimulating" music. Btw, I enjoy certain rap, rock, and classical music (I assume that's what you are referring to) pieces.

Yes I like rap. But if you limit rap to what the MTV gives you, you will be force fed crap just like if you limit your punk music to what MTV calls punk, everyone would think punk sucks too, even the true punk fans today. Well, some people would still hate it, but you can't please everybody.

Here's my list of what makes rap great:
Black Star (Talib Kweli & Mos Def)
Refelection Eternal (Talib Kweli & DJ Hi-Tek)
J-Live
Aesop Rock
El-P
Company Flow
Atmosphere
Murs
Cannibal Ox
A Tribe Called Quest
Blackalicious
Black Eyed Peas
Common
Jedi Mind Tricks
The Roots
RJD2
Soul Position
Jurassic 5
Cunninlynguists
Dilated Peoples
Pete Rock
Del Tha Funkee Homosapien
Illogic
Juggaknots
GZA
Ghostface Killah
Zion I
Gangstarr
Method Man & Redman (the best of the party rappers)
De La Soul

I think that covers most of it, I'm sure everyone else has their favorites. The guys above do good stuff.

Well duh they like the way it sounds. The question I was answering was why that is. And for the record, I enjoy rock/pop in addition to everything else. I wasn't just referring to classical music, either, there's intelligent music in all forms, but it tends to be less popular. It's more difficult for people to absorb, and the pulse is more hidden. It isn't always just a melody with accompaniment (the meaning of the word "song"), there's more going on and it takes many listens to hear it all and recognize how it all comes together to form the piece. For that matter, not all classical music is genius in its construction, but is famous simply for its beauty (for example, the Mendelssohn Songs Without Words fit the aforementioned description, hence their title, or many of the Liszt piano works).

Anyway, I'm starting to ramble, just thought I'd clarify.

How Could I forget:
A Tribe Called Quest
Wycleff Jean
EPMD
RJD2
Handsome Boy Modeling School
Dr. Dooom(plus Kool Keiths many other aliases)
Dr. Octagon
People Under the Stairs
N.E.R.D
Cypress Hill
Tech N9ne

DJ Shadow and Dan the Autotmator - Bombay The Hard Way is a very good album
If you are looking for an incredible turntablism mix I can't recomend "Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow- Brainfreeze" enough

50 Cent, Jay Z, and Ludacris are my favorites. Nelly, DMX, Nappy Roots, and Outkast have a few good songs. I don't care for Eminem too much as far as what his songs are usually about, but I must admit that the man is a lyrical genius. Snoop Dog, Dre, B.I.G., and Tupac have always been good. But for me it is mostly just a select few songs from a particular artist. I think 50 Cent is the only artist whose CD I can stand to listen to beginning to end.

fo shizzle. rap is good for pleasure listening. i like most stuff that shady and dre pump out. they gave 50 that nice beat, and even though i dont really like 50, the songs are catchy. i like... pdiddy too. and gotta love welcome to atlanta remix.

thing about rap is its STUPID. with the exception of eminem. most other rappers rap about stupid shizzo.

I do. My favorites include:

NWA
Public Enemy
A Tribe Called Quest
Run DMC
Early LL Cool J
DJ Quik / AMG / Hi-C
50 Cent
etc.

Rap is great, unfortuneately the only people that make it to TV are the people with connections or fat loads of cash, which narrows the music played immensely. 50Cent and Eminem are big because Dr. Dre gave them the means to promote themselfs. P.Diddy through B.I.G., Ginuwine through P.Diddy, Lil Wayne through Master P., the list goes on. That's not to say that people don't actually like any of the music, but the fact is that there is far better music to choose from out there, and it's also hard to find.

The only thing you can do to expose rap is collect, I've got 300+ rap albums and I know there's a crap load more of it floating around. I have a somewhat outdated list of my music collection on my site below, it's a good way to get yourself familiar with what's out there that you've never heard before.

Rap is almost all I listen to, but I don't enjoy any of the rap that promotes ignorance in any form other than comedy. Statements such as "Money Hoe's'n'cloths" or "Your not gettin nothing but'a blunt and'a mouth fulla ding'a'lang" are hillarious when they mix in with a song, and ment to be. I like bands like Days Of the New, Collective Soul, Incubus, Evesance(sp), Creed and other music like that as well. Saying rap is just "idiots trying to write poetry" is a completely false statement though, music is entertainment and if rap dosen't entertain you then it simply isen't for you.

Slandering an art form becuase you don't like it meaningless crap, rude and childish.

Only underground and none of that sh!t where they brag about their hos and their bling bling. I'm sorry but that is annoying. Anyways, I'm a white ass so my black friends they have flow battles... I'm no good but hell it's great.
