People don't like to think. If something is intellectually stimulating, where you actually have to think a little and concentrate a bit to get something out of it, they won't like it. They want instant gratification. Rap and Rock are both so popular because the beat is slapped across your face, that pulse never changes, and it's very simple and very easy to digest.
 
Rap is pretty highly overrated, but there are some good artists. Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Dr. Dre, A Tribe Called Quest, Puff Daddy (or P. Diddy or whatever the fvck he's called nowadays) are all quite listenable.
