I see this all the time in television & movies. Someone tries to get into a house and doesn't have the key so they lift up the welcome mat or a nearby flowerpot and pull out the spare. I guess if hidden well enough it's not an issue but I'm curious how many people actually do this given it's prevalence in media.

As for me, I live in the city in an apartment so it's not as relevant to me though I do have a spare somewhere but it's not hidden near the building as described above.

Yes, but not in an obvious spot and you'd probably not find it without looking for some time. By that point you're better off just breaking a window pane in the door and opening it that way.

We have a spare key, but it's in a locked (combination) key box inside our yard.

I think I have a spare in the desk at work... course the garage door has one of these key pad things...

My parents have one. It's in the mailbox on the wall 1' away from the door handle, just sitting in there not hidden or anything, but they make sure to lock the door every day.

I remember seeing this on TV as a kid... every effing show seemed to show the hidden key being used to break in. Yet, I still wanted one, especially those half-rocks with a key hiding place carved into the bottom half.

No key. The dog door is big enough for all but the fattest of fatties to crawl right in so that's my emergency plan. Theoretically, the dogs won't let anyone in who doesn't know the password.

No, not really. Half the time we can't even find all the keys. Fortunately we live in a town with essentially zero crime.

Yes, but well-hidden, nowhere near the door and not in a place anyone would think of looking. Used it once, so I guess it was a good thing it was there.

I installed a garage pad so that is my backup. Used it once for that reason also...

I'm not exactly sure where the key to the front door even is. The wife and I always enter and leave through the garage.

+1

Mine is bolted to a railing for now. I may hollow out a post to hide the safe in some day.

Isn't the world getting a little too digital? It seems so much easier and more efficient to stash a key somewhere safe rather than buying new locks that can be opened with an app.

It sure is, what happens when we have digital toilets and the power goes out?

Same for me. Key is hid a good 40 feet from the front door and in a nearly impossible to find spot.

I had one of those half rocks as a teenager. We kept it on top of the fridge inside the garage though so it was obvious that it wasn't a real rock.

At the house now, we have an ugly realtor box that the listing agent never took so we locked that onto a part of the side fence and use that.
