Do you have a problem losing weight?

I've lost 40 pounds in the last 4 months without dieting or exercising. What I eat most weekdays:

Breakfast:
4 egg whites with cheese on top (4-cheese blend, shredded)
2 pieces of wheat toast, with apple butter

~10 - 11 AM Snack:
1 apple
1 orange

Lunch (~1:00 - 1:30):
Usually some type of chicken with vegetables or even spaghetti with whole grain noodles

Afternoon Snack:
All-Bran Honey Oat Bar

Dinner:
Either the same as lunch (lunch is usually leftovers) or a bowl of cereal that's relatively healthy (Frosted Mini Wheats are alright)

That's it. I try to take the stairs sometimes (not even 1/2 the time) and I walk the mile to and from work every day, but that's it. Some days I'm more hungry, so I'll cook some broccoli and top it with the same cheese I put on the eggs, or I'll eat a handful of nuts, or some applesauce (Mott's Lite uses Splenda as the sweetner is AWESOME!), or maybe a bowl of oatmeal (this is my favorite, usually with skim milk). The only other thing I'll mention is NO SODA! I was having about 1 20oz per day before, but I cut that out entirely eventually. It's empty calories and sugar that you don't need. I have a cup of DARK ROAST coffee some mornings (less caffeine than other roasts) if I need a pickup, but I have so much more energy anyway, that I really don't need it.

40 pounds... just a few months. It's that easy. I don't know why it took me this long to figure out. Just figured I'd pass this on since I've seen so many posts here talking about people that can't lose weight.

i don't understand what you mean by "without dieting or exercising".

didn't you change what you eat?

don't you consider taking stairs and walking to work a form of exercise?

EDIT: congrats though on your healthier lifestyle

All that cheese doesn't seem that good for you. You'll probably end up with clogged arteries but at least you won't be fat

staying in shape is a lifestyle, not a temporary hold off on food. so exercising and a balanced diet is essential. not trying to rip on you. but exercise is healthy for you man. plus you will get sick of eating the same things over and over again everyday

yeah its nice when you have a DIET that consist of no cheesburgers or pizza...and then EXERCISING a mile each day... really helps to keep off the pounds 😛

I could be wrong, but I think the darker the roast- the more the caffeine.

And grats on cutting down.

Um, you didn't exactly mention your starting weight. It's easier for a 400 pound person to drop 5 lbs. than it is for a 150 lb. person to do the same.

I disagree. Have you ever been fat? To fat people:

Dieting = Not eating when you're hungry

I know that's not the technical definition of a "diet," but I guarantee you anyone that's overweight doesn't see that as a diet.

I only put on a little in the morning, and I eat apple sauce, peanuts, or oatmeal FAR more often than I make the broccoli. I buy the big bags and that lasts me over a month, usually, if it doesn't go bad. I think I'm in reasonable limits.

You know what? I started a similar diet as you about 3 weeks ago. Basically, I'm eating a bowl of cereal for breakfast, a resonable lunch, and a reasonable dinner. The big difference in my eating habits are that I am not eating until I am completely stuffed, and the biggest change is... NO SODA. I'm not losing weight fast, but I've lost 4lbs so far which is a little more than a pound per week.

Not anymore.

Morning 3-4 eggs whites or 1 lean pocket ultra or a protien shake and a cup of black coffee with splenda.
Lunch 2 lean pocket ultras and 2 diet pepsis/cokes.
Dinner 2 lean pocket ultras and water or diet pepsi/coke.

Then I come home and run four miles.

That's about 1000 calories. Most of the time I will have another 200 calorie snack so that I don't die.

I've gone from 143lbs to 125lbs. Now I am thinking about lifting weights to build muscle mass.

I didn't change my diet at all. I went from doing nothing to not playing video games anymore or watching tv. Now I go to aikido and judo classes, and I randori a lot. Plus I work out with some light weights. I've gone from about 207 to 180 pounds in about 6 months (i'm about 5' 9" maybe 5' 10". Plus i'm stronger, and the more muscle you have, the faster you burn calories. Which means the faster you will loose weight. I have only added one thing to my diet. Its called Emer'gen-C its a vitamin supliment that you mix with water that tastes like tang. No fat burners or steroids or anything like those muscle building drinks, just vitamins to help keep me energized. Mostly C, b12, and b6 with a bunch of other stuff. For me its like drinking a red bull without caffene.

My normal diet is a lot of red meat (steaks and such) lots of potatoes, pasta, chicken, green beans. I love chilis made with turkey and sasuage. all the good stuff. I drink about 3 pepsi's a day and about 6 glasses of water. Plus a good deal of beer on the weekends.

1000 calories is WAY too low. You are losing muscle.

Oh definitely. I started at around 320 (I'm 6'9"), and I'm at around 280 now. Definitely YMMV.

Again, I want to stress that I know that my eating habits have changed, but I eat when I want to, so I don't feel that I'm "dieting."

Also, I think someone said something about variety, so I want to comment on that. Basically, I try to eat whole wheat when possible, but I also try to eat a variety of things. For instance, I'll get grapes or a different type of cereal at times. I also eat roast beef or turkey sometimes instead of chicken. I change the vegetables to anything from corn or mixed vegetables to zucchini squash. I also add in Stove Top sometimes, with Cream of Mushroom soup. Whatever. I was just simplifying it to give everyone an idea.

EDIT: Forgot my two other favorite fruits: strawberries and bananas. Both very easy to eat.

Agreed, 1000 calories/day is pretty darn low. The healthiest way to go, I'd imagine, is to eat maybe 1800-2000 calories or so and then just exercise for an hour a day. That way you're actually burning fat instead of muscle...largely because your body doesn't think you're starving.

Nah I am not losing that much muscle.
I look alot better though. :-D
I can run further faster, and I lift just a tad bit less than I could before.

1000 calories is very unhealthy and you are going to put yourself into starvation mode.

My wife(works in a very large hospital) has worked directly with cardiac specialists that help people change their lifestyles and eating habits. Even people that are grossly obese are put on diets that are 1200 calories or more. Anything less is just not good.

You really should be taking in around 1500-1800 if you want to lose weight. A guy your size probably needs 2300-2500 just to maintain. Even at 1500-1800 you are 700-1000 calories below your needs.

I've lost 20 pounds since the beginning of September by eating reasonable (1800-2000 calories per day) and adding in light exercise and lifting.

I'm 6'0 and was at around 188. I'm now down to 167. I still eat candy, still drink beers, still eat pizza. I just don't snack, I eat very high fiber diets, and have cut out highly refined foods as much as possible. I walk on the treadmill 3 days a week for 30 minutes and do some light weight resistance.

Nope. That only applies when the coffee is darker BECAUSE you put in more coffee than normal.

Also, there is less caffeine in the darker roasted coffees than in the lighter ones.

Huh. Touche' Ilmater!
