Have an acedemic version of XP and Office, plus my MSDN subscription allows me to install any of their software at home and in the office.

I guess some people can rationalize breaking the law and the rest of us understand right and wrong.

And some of us are capable for thinking for ourselves, and understand the difference between our own values and the rules imposed on us by the government.

Really: is everything that is illegal inconsistent with your values? Is everything legal consistent with your values?

:Q <--- you, finally figuring it out when you write an OS of your own, commit the money and resources to supporting it for ten years on an endless variety of hardware/software combinations, and people begin stealing your product.

Golden Rule much? ;)

I'm assuming it's legit. It was loaded on my work machine, but I hate it and wish I could replace it with 2K (bios locks out other OSs).

I used to use a pirate almost everything, but when I junked my old computer that had all the pirated stuff (win98, office, etc.) I decided I would do my best to no longer pirate programs. Now I'm using a oem winXP that came with my lappy and using free equivalents (gimp, openoffice, etc.) for almost everything now. The only program I pirate now is Matlab, which I need for school and can't afford.

Apparently I failed to convey the point I was trying to make. I was objecting to the statement that what an individual considers "right and wrong" should be determined by what the government says is lawful or unlawful. In your case, you seem to be making an actual argument as to why you consider unauthorized copying to be wrong. So the above objection does not apply to you.

Yes, all the time. Though I don't need to believe in Santa Claus to appreciate such principles.

How about Matthew 16:28 for a truly delusional Jesus quote?

(to his disciples: )

"I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."

Hey, Jesus, we're all still waiting for that whole end-of-the-world thing you kept talking about.

Keep on looking for the wrong kind of kingdom, if you like ;)

In my opinion, you should only need one OS, unless of course you are running a server, then you would want to get an OS more suited for that. But for your regular use, if you have to use linux and windows, then linux is not a better OS. I'm not a Linux basher, I just think that Linux should give me no reason to use Windows. And it's better, but not there yet. Windows gives me no reason to use Linux. And that's all there is to it

You ever heard of the statement....use the right tool for the right job?

Your entire response makes you sound incredibly naive. Maybe you are a consumer user which doesn't care about anything beyond the scope of what they currently do. That's fair.
A lot of folks like that.

To answer a few things from your comments (sorry, can't resist)

There are some things that folks prefer to use Linux for and some things folks prefer using Windows for. Linux has it's strength and weakness, just as much as Windows. You should only use Linux if you need to use Linux or want to use Linux. And the same goes for Windows. There are a lot of fanatics which say "Linux sucks!" or "Windows Sucks!". Neither is a perfect operating system. A lot of folks I know have dual boot systems to be able to use both Linux and Windows. Nothing wrong with that at all.

From my own experience using OSS (Open Source Software (ie, Linux, FreeBSD)) and Windows, I do find that Linux/Unix gives you more flexibility in what you can do then Windows does. So from my perspective, I would agree with n0c, OSS IS better then Windows. From a different perspective, those who have barely touched Linux/Unix and use mainly Windows, they might find Linux is worse. Then again, they might not care to learn about Linux enough to know more of it's pros and cons. Are they evil to think like that? No. They just don't care.
